The start of a new school year brings us many things — new friends, wonderful teachers and lots of bugs. Many diseases can be found in schools. The most common ones are strep throat, colds, flu and chickenpox (水痘).
How do you stay away from the illnesses at school It’s easy. Enough sleep, regular hand washing, and eating breakfast every day will help protect us from many illnesses. Here’s why:
Experts say children and teenagers need at least nine hours of sleep a night to keep healthy. Now the study shows that we are not getting a good night’s sleep because TVs and computers are in bedrooms. We should go to bed earlier a few weeks before school begins.
Hand washing is also important. One of the most common ways people catch a cold is by rubbing (揉) their nose or eyes after their hands have been contaminated (污染) with the cold virus (病毒). For that reason, the best way to prevent colds and flu is to wash hands before we eat and after we use the bathroom.
Eating a healthy breakfast gives us a good start. Studies have shown that children who eat breakfast learn better, behave better, go to school more often, and are more active in class.
( )36. What does the passage mainly talk about

( )39. Why is washing hands the best way to prevent colds and flu
A. Because our hands are always dirty after working and studying.
B. Because we often rub the nose and eyes with hands which may have the cold virus.
C. Because we have no other ways.
D. Because washing hands is a good habit.
( )40. Which of the following is NOT true about eating breakfast
A. The students who eat breakfast learn better.
B. The students who eat breakfast are more active in class.
C. The students who eat breakfast go to school every day.
D. The students who eat breakfast behave better.

American high schools have a dropout rate (辍学率) of up to 50%. There are many reasons for students leaving school:
● For two thirds of the dropouts, motivation (动力) is the problem. They can’t just work hard enough.
● Almost half of them said that they had missed so many classes that they could not follow any more.
● Many said that they were not ready well enough in their earlier school.
● For a third of them, getting a job is more important than finishing school.
High school dropouts have more problems in their future lives. They are more likely (可能的) to be out of work or live a poor life. There is also a big difference in income (收入) if you compare high school dropouts with graduates. A study shows Americans with a bachelor’s degree (学士学位) get about $50,000, those with a high school diploma about $28,000 and dropouts only about $20,000.
Many younger students do not understand the influence of dropping out of school. They often need better teachers, more lessons to get good grades in subjects and more help with learning problems. Some schools in America have changed this situation. Some schools offer evening classes or allow students to come back at a later age.
