三、阅读理解 (共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
A little while ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on a neighbor’s fence. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination.” I had been having a bad day and just reading this brightened my day a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favorite mottos (格言) down.
When I came back to the fence, I saw another motto under mine in the same handwriting as the first one. I wrote another one, and we kept doing this for quite a while. One day, I was writing a motto on the fence and the old man, who owned the fence, saw me. He was not known to be very friendly, and I was afraid he would be mad at me. He gave me a sharp glance (一瞥) and then read the mottos on the fence. Without saying a word, he went back inside. For a while, I was afraid to go back to the fence, but when I did, I noticed two words in different handwriting had been added, “Thank you.”
Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He invited me inside and told me how our mottos had been encouraging him, how he thanked us and how glad he was to see young people still had “values”. We are now good friends. This experience has changed my life too. I still don’t know who wrote that very first motto, but if he is out there, I’d like to say thanks to that unknown hero.

A. wanted to practice his handwriting by writing a motto

C. Good relationships between neighbors are very important.
D. The old man has changed his view on young people.

Have you ever wondered what the perfect place to visit would be if you had the chance? Well, let me tell you: a paradise of wonder on the small island of Jamaica. When I went there, I had the greatest time of my life.
Everything about Jamaica is just perfect. There are so many places to go and things to do. There are white sandy beaches and the ocean is so clear that you can see everything from coral to colorful fish. Another great thing is all the fresh fruit, and how much better it tastes. Some people there carry things around on their heads in a very unique way: they wrap cloth around their heads and then place the object on top and position it so it stays balanced. It’s amazing!
One of the most interesting things I have ever seen was the Glistening Waters. The name describes exactly what it is: one of a few lakes in the world that allows a rare living thing to live in it. Have you ever wondered about fireflies (萤火虫) and why they have a green light? Well, when you touch this water, it glows bright green exactly like a firefly. We got to swim there in the dark, which was really amazing.
There are just so many great and interesting places to explore in Jamaica. Other things include swinging (荡秋千) on vines into lakes, sensitive grass that closes when it feels your touch, and even exploring bat caves that have warm water you can swim in.
As you might guess, Jamaica is one of the most wonderful places, and I think you should make plans to go there soon.

The Potomac River is the wildest river in the world that flows through a heavily populated area. The Potomac River provides water for most of the six million people who live in the Washington D.C. area. Millions of people use the river and the land nearby for boating, fishing, bird-watching and other activities.
The Potomac River has played an important part in American history. For example, America’s first president, George Washington, lived for many years along the Potomac River in Virginia. He suggested that the river be developed to connect Americans with the West.
Over the centuries, industry, agriculture and human development seriously damaged the environment of the Potomac River. By the 1970s, people described the river’s condition as sickening. Then the U.S. Congress (国会) passed the Clean Water Law in 1972.
The water quality has improved greatly since then. But some factories still drop harmful chemicals (化学品) into the water. Waste materials from the Anacostia River float on the Potomac River. Pesticide (杀虫剂) products keep polluting the water. Many environmentalists worry about the building of new homes and businesses along the river.
The river faces many environmental problems as a result of population growth. The river flows through land controlled by developers, state and local governments. These groups often have different ideas about what is good and bad for the river. Several organizations work to protect and improve the Potomac River and the land near it.
The Potomac Conservancy is one of those organizations. It carries out a land protection program, develops land and water restoration (恢复) projects, and provides education programs for adults and young people.

For me, one of the greatest pleasures is going to watch a great film — or movie —at the cinema. It’s a good chance of getting away from real life. There’s nothing better than being absorbed in a story at the cinema.
Whether at an art-house cinema or a huge one, someone usually treats the cinema as his own home. It seems that they don’t understand the way of behaving at the cinema. To start with, some people always turn up late, causing you to rise from your seat to allow them to get past. Then, when you want to enjoy the surround-sound effects, someone decides to drink and eat noisily. What’s worse, some people decide to chat with their friends loudly, sometimes not even about the film.
Simon Mayo, a film critic (评论家), experienced something annoying. He said, “Once the woman in front of me gets the phone out and then turns it into a mirror. Her friend then also gets her phone out and uses the torch (手电) on it to allow her to do her make-up!” Simon Mayo has helped to make a list of rules on how people should behave at the cinema. One of them is to ban mobile phones and anything to eat. Another is not to take your shoes off, which is what he can’t stand at all.
We all know that the best way to appreciate the art of cinema is on the big screen. We feel it is our right to enjoy the film in the way we like, but we mustn’t forget our fellow moviegoers who want to enjoy the cinematic experience too. I should say everyone should behave well and the best choice for people who break the rules of the cinema is to get a DVD and watch it at home.
51. Why does the author enjoy going to the cinema?
A. Because the stories are moving. B. Because the films are very popular.
C. Because going to the cinema is a fashion.
D. Because it gives him a chance to escape from real life.
52. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. People can’t bring their kids to the cinema.
B. People can’t rise from the seat at any time.
C. People should arrive at the cinema on time.
D. People can only talk about the film at the cinema.
53. What is considered to be the worst by Simon Mayo?
A. Answering phone calls.
B. Making up at the cinema.
C. Taking off the shoes at the cinema.
D. Using the mobile phone as a light.
54. People with bad manners at the cinema .
A. must get rid of all his bad habits
B. should enjoy the movie at home
C. have no right to go to the cinema
D. don’t appreciate the art of the cinema
55. What’s the main topic of the passage?
A. A list of rules of the cinema.
B. The bad manners at the cinema.
C. Watching a film is the greatest pleasure.
D. People should behave well at the cinema.

写作一
The relationship between parents and children is one of the most important relationships in our lifetime. We often receive gifts from our parents on our birthday, but we seldom give birthday gifts to them. It’s hard to find good gifts for our parents, but if we use our mind, we’ll come up with something to please them. In my opinion, no matter what kind of gift it is, the most important is our love for them.

Dear Li Hua,
I’m glad to hear from you. I’d like to tell you something about my study and life in my new school.
