My friend Brett had just gotten a bike. A lot of kids in my neighborhood knew how to ride. I wanted to also. All the boys told me I couldn’t do it because I was a girl. I was determined to prove them wrong, so Brett let me try his bike. I wasn’t on for one minute before I fell off. He came over to see if I was OK, but then started laughing.
That night I told my dad the whole story about how I wanted to be as good as boys. A few days later my dad told me he had found a nice bike. He brought it home and that was when I became the laughing stock of the neighborhood. All the boys thought it was a joke that I actually wanted to learn how to ride.
My dad spent four long weeks teaching me everything I needed to know about the bike and the basics of riding. Day after day and night after night he worked with me, and I began to progress.
Each ride on my dirt bike, I got a little better, and finally I was ready for my first time on the trails. At first I couldn’t keep up and the boys had to wait for me. My bike constantly got stuck in the muddy creeks.
Every time I came back, I would cry, and every time I cried my dad was there to put his arms around me. He would tell me not to listen to them and that with more practice, I would be as good as others or better than them.

Almost every kid in this country has eaten a Hershey chocolate bar. Hershey chocolate has become famous around the world.
Milton Hershey grew up in the rolling farm country of Pennsylvania. Milton Hershey first trained to become a printer. He worked for a small newspaper at first, and then decided that printing was not the right job for him.
Then he got a job at a candy factory in Pennsylvania. After working a few years, he decided to open his own candy business. His first business had to close down because it was not making money. After closing down his first business, he traveled to Denver, Colorado to learn how to make caramels (焦糖).
He took his new skills back to New York and worked selling candies in the street. But this second business also failed.
Finally, Milton Hershey moved back to the farm hills where he grew up. He then experimented with all sorts of different candies and chocolates. The area where he lived had lots of dairy farms, so he had a large and easy supply of fresh milk.
And he could get other supplies, such as sugar, from nearby Philadelphia. By 1893 he earned a million dollars per year. Since his chocolate dipped and chocolate flavored caramels were best sellers, he decided to make chocolate himself.
By experimenting, Milton Hershey discovered how to make delicious chocolate by using fresh sweet condensed (浓缩的) milk. His milk chocolates were so popular that he sold his caramel factory and focused his business on making chocolate only.
In 1903, Milton Hershey built a huge chocolate factory and an entire town to go with it. The town of Hershey, Pennsylvania had a streetcar line, schools, libraries, a sports arena, a community center and a special school for needy children.

One reason parents may not be up in arms about the lack of PE classes in school is that many of them didn’t get much out of PE classes when they were kids. If you didn’t do well in the fitness test every year, and if you didn’t have a talent for fielding balls or using the gymnastics equipment, PE classes were mostly an experience that will hurt your self-confidence. In games such as dodge ball (躲球游戏), where the least-skilled aren’t included, only the athletically gifted got the playing time.
The male-centered, competitive way has been especially difficult for girls, because many of them enjoy doing cooperative activities more.
There’s also little “physical” in too many of today’s physical education classes. Kids in PE classes should be active for at least 50 percent of the time. Researchers have found, however, that kids take part in energetic activity for only a few minutes in a typical class. The rest of the time is spent standing around while the teacher takes attendance, or waiting for a turn to shoot a basket or hit a ball.
PE classes in many of today’s schools are taught the same as it was in the 1950s. Fortunately, PE reformers (改革家) have created new programs that are being tried in a few schools. The emphasis (重点) is not on competition but on helping kids build skills and develop an interest in some activities they will enjoy doing on their own. In the new-style PE classes, games are designed to pay less attention to competition and replace (取代) it with cooperation.

An English saying goes: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” That means we should relax after a day’s hard work or we’ll be unhealthy.
Many students know that if they want to get ideal (理想的) jobs with good salaries, they must do well in high school so they can enter good universities. Therefore, they spend all day studying without time to relax.
However, not all students can go to top universities even if they work very hard. Students are pressurized (施压) by parents and teachers who are just concerned about their studies and exam scores while ignoring their hobbies and individual differences. As a result, students are forced to work harder and harder.
Furthermore, there is pressure coming from students themselves. They realize they have a slim chance of getting into a top university as competition is fierce. So, they put a lot of stress on themselves and stay in a nervous state day after day. If they keep it up, they’ll suffer illnesses, both psychological and physical.
What students need is relaxation. This doesn’t mean that they should give up their ambitions and stop studying hard. It means “work while you work, play while you play”. If you can do this, you will improve your health greatly. You’ll feel yourself suddenly fresh, just like recovering from a terrible illness. You’ll find that your studies are not a burden (负担) anymore.
51. The underlined part in the first paragraph might mean all the following EXCEPT .
A. too much work may bring trouble to anyone
B. overwork without rest is sure to make one foolish
C. Jack becomes dull because he works too much
D. anyone who doesn’t work will break down
52. What trouble have both the parents and the teachers brought to the students?
A. They don’t know how to let the students relax.
B. They give too much burden for them to bear.
C. They don’t love those who work the hardest.
D. They fail to understand what the students need most.
53. What causes the students’ pressure from themselves?
A. That they don’t know how to get to top universities.
B. That they want to relax but have no chance.
C. That they fail to relax themselves during their work.
D. That they think too much about the result of their work.
54. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What to do to relax yourself.
B. The serious situation for the poor students.
C. Some problems caused by the misunderstanding of learning.
D. How to be a healthy and successful learner.
55. Which of the following might serve as the best title of the whole passage?
A. Never work too hard B. Work hard but relax as well
C. Ways to be healthy D. No pains, no gains

Most people prefer not to be forced to do what they are unwilling to do. However, every coin has two sides so we should treat these situations differently. Look around at the trees or flowers in the garden. All of them grow well because of gardeners’ cutting work and they form a beautiful and pleasant view. The same goes for children who need parents’ and teachers’ proper regulations. So in my opinion, proper regulations are needed.

A trip to a water-saving exhibition center near our school was organized on January 15th, 2013. Teachers and students from the Science & Technology Interest Group of the school took part in the activity.
When we arrived there, we were firstly led to visit a hall which shows pictures and posters about saving water. There we better understood water’s importance and how to save water in our daily lives. Then we saw the latest water-saving technology from home and abroad. In the end, we discussed the future development of water-saving technologies.
The trip has opened up our eyes and enriched our knowledge of water saving.
