Once upon a time, a man heard that in a faraway place there was a burning holy flame (圣火). So he got up and left his home to find the holy flame and bring some of its light back home to his house. He thought, “When I have light, I will have happiness and life and all the people I love will have it too.”
He traveled far, far away and finally found the holy flame, with which he lit his light. On his way back, he had only one worry: his light could go out.
On his way home he met someone who was freezing and didn’t have any fire. They begged him to give them some of his fire. The man with the light thought for a moment. Wasn’t his light too valuable, too holy to be given away for something ordinary like that? Despite these doubts, he decided to give some of his light to the ones who were freezing in the darkness.
The man continued his journey home and when he had almost reached his house, a terrible storm started. He tried to protect his light from the rain, but in the end his light went out.
To return the long way back to the place where the holy flame was burning was impossible, but he was strong enough to return to the people whom he had helped on his way home. And with his light, he could light his own again.

Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor in the United States. Her success opened the way for other women who wanted to do more than nursing. She was born in England in 1821 and her family moved to America when she was eleven years old.
The Blackwell girls received the same education as their brothers. This was most unusual in those days. Their father died young and they had very little money to live on. Elizabeth and her sisters taught at school. Then a woman dying of cancer urged Elizabeth to study medicine, saying that a woman doctor would have saved her from her worst sufferings. Nearly everyone said a girl should not go to medical school, but she managed to enter Geneva College in New York State. She graduated in 1849 at the head of her class and received the first medical degree ever given to a woman.
Next, Dr. Blackwell went to Paris. Her only chance of training was in a hospital where women came to have their babies. Four months later, while she was working in the French hospital, her left eye became dangerously infected (感染). She lost the eye. She was very disappointed. But she was soon back at work again, this time in London, England. There she met many famous scientists.
In 1859, Elizabeth Blackwell was officially recognized as a doctor in Great Britain — the first woman to be honored. A few years after my grandmother passed away, my grandfather let me dig through their old photos. I found a picture that interested me. My beautiful grandmother was dressed nicely, smiling with joy against the ocean. I showed the photo to my grandfather, and a smile appeared on his face.
He told me how my grandmother’s life was when my former grandfather had left her. Her children, including my mother, were very young. My grandmother was forced to move back with her parents and support her family with hardly any income (收入). But through all the suffering, she never got sad. When things would go from bad to worse, she would call her girlfriends, get dressed up, and go to the ocean for the day. Things finally turned around, and she remarried. My grandfather helped raise her children.
That night in bed at my grandfather’s house, I looked at this photo for hours. I considered what it must have been like for her when her husband went to the grocery store one day and never returned. I thought about how lonely and scared she must have been. But in that photo, I saw none of those feelings. I only saw a beautiful woman entirely enjoying herself and the wonderful beauty around her.
I brought the photo home with me, and I keep it at my desk while I follow my dreams. When things start to get difficult, I see my grandmother saying to me, “Go call your girls, get dressed up and enjoy life!” It reminds me of my gifts and why I am here. When I return to my desk, I am happy, ready to deal with my destiny (命运) once again.
