When blankets arrived for the homeless and new cars appeared for those in need, people in the city of Terrace in British Columbia thought it must be magic. It turned out that the magic was coming from Bob Erb, 60, who won $25 million in a national lottery (彩票) called Lotto Max.
Bob Erb believes in sharing his wealth. In fact, since he won the lottery about a month ago, he’s given away more than $7 million. He has given money to the staff (员工) at the gas station where he bought the ticket. He gave $20,000 to the man who sold him the ticket. He’s given money to the homeless. And he’s helped more than a dozen local businesses.
He has been buying lottery tickets for more than 40 years. One day, the clerk he bought the ticket from accidentally rang up more “plays” than Erb had asked for. But he let it be. And it’s a good thing he did, because one of those plays hit the $25 million jackpot (头奖).
It is true that Erb’s generosity has helped his whole community. The new vehicles he bought and gave away helped the car sellers have a better year. And if people he chose didn’t need the vans, they passed them on to someone else in need. Erb has lived in the area for many years and generosity is nothing new to him, according to people who know him. On a recent visit to a seniors’ centre for lunch, Erb ate his soup and sandwich and then wrote a cheque for $20,000 to help out the centre.
In Erb’s opinion, the money won’t change him. His friends agree. They say he believes in “paying forward” or sharing good luck and inspiring others to do the same. Erb has put some of the money into a trust fund for his grandchildren, and he has invested $10 million in stocks so he can use the interest to continue helping people.

Going back to the land can be done. It is called “living the simple life”. But we are so used to our computers, cell phones, and supermarkets; we don’t know the word “simple” anymore. In fact, it is not hard to grow a garden in your backyard if you own a home.
We all have gotten lazy in the last two generations. All we seem to care about is who or what we can take from. The land that we are building on is starting to run out. The mountains are being torn down to make way for a million dollar home. Why not just build a simple home to blend in with (十分协调) the land?
Before we could even think about returning to the land, we have to give the land back to the earth. Stop tearing down the forests for needless million dollar homes. Stop cutting into the mountains because you want to escape the truth around you. Stop ripping up the parks to make more highways.
Plant more flowers so the bees can have a chance to survive. Plant a tree now and you may save the planet later. Pick up trash when you see it on the ground. We need to teach our children how to start conservation (保护) now before their generation has to live underground, or worse they won’t have a next generation.
Today I walked outside and it is supposed to be winter, but it is 80 degrees. The flowers are blooming (开放) too early because we cannot control our habits of greed (贪婪). I cannot understand why we are killing the only place we have to live on. We can spend billions on needless things that pollute this planet, but we can’t spend pennies on seeds that would save this planet. What a shame!
46. Which of the following can be one example of “living the simple life”?
A. Growing a garden. B. Walking to work.
C. Working with computers. D. Avoiding supermarkets.
47. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us .
A. some facts about the land
B. what we have done to the land
C. what we can take from the land
D. what we should do to give the land back to the earth
48. To return to the land, we should .
A. raise lots of animals B. never escape the truth
C. stop building highways D. grow as many plants as possible
49. In Paragraph 5, the author .
A. expresses personal wishes
B. shows the changes of nature
C. criticizes human beings’ behavior
D. suggests some ways to save the land
50. How does the author feel about human beings’ deeds?
A. Ashamed. B. Surprised. C. Moved. D. Sad.

I sat in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order for two cups of coffee, putting one of them on the wall. We heard this order with interest and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two. As soon as he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee.”
While we were still there, two other men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same. He put a piece of paper on the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee.” It seemed that this gesture was a norm at this place. However, it was something unique to us. Since we had nothing to do with the matter, we finished our coffee, paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we again had a chance to go to this coffee shop. While we were enjoying our coffee, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not match the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty (贫穷) was obvious from his face. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, one cup of coffee from the wall. The waiter served coffee to this man with the customary respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dust bin.
Now the matter was very clear to us. The great respect for the needy shown by the inhabitants (居民) of this town moved us to tears. Coffee is not a need of our society, neither is it a necessity of life for us. The point to note is that when we take pleasure in any blessing, maybe we also need to think about those people who appreciate the specific blessing that they cannot afford to have.
Note the character of this waiter, who is playing a generous role to get the communication going between the affording and the needy with a smile on his face. Think of the man in need. He entered the coffee shop without having to lower his self-esteem (自尊). There’s no need for him to ask for a free cup of coffee without asking or knowing about the one who gave this cup of coffee. He only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left.
When we analyze this story, along with the other characters, we need to remember the role played by the wall that reflects the generosity and care of the dwellers of this town.
51. Where did this story take place?
A. In a supermarket. B. In a coffee shop.
C. In a restaurant. D. In a street.
52. It is quite normal for the inhabitants in this town to .
A. buy one extra cup of coffee in this coffee shop
B. meet their friends and relatives in this coffee shop
C. pay for other customers’ coffee in this coffee shop
D. pay more money to the shop owner in the coffee shop
53. Which of the following is TRUE about the man who enjoyed the free coffee?
A. He was unwilling to pay for his coffee.
B. He was very proud and selfish.
C. He was a poor and badly dressed man.
D. He was a native in the town.
54. The author advises us to .
A. think about those who are in need
B. treat strangers with respect
C. respect the poor as well as the rich
D. learn about other people better
55. The underlined word “dwellers” in the last paragraph means .
A. shopkeepers B. buildings
C. servants D. inhabitants
D

第二节 下面文章中有5个段落需要添加首句(第61-65题)。请从下列选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出适合各段落的首句。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Focus on starting.
B. Make the habit tiny.
C. Enjoy doing the habit.
D. Do the habit once a day.
E. Stick to one habit at a time.
F. Make an effort to form the habit.
How to stick to a habit
The hardest thing for most people, when it comes to building habits, is sticking to it long enough. So how do you stick to a habit? Here are the rules.
61. It’s easy to start a habit, but sticking to it is another thing. Please note that there is one habit period at the beginning. Don’t think you can do one social habit, one work habit and so on at the same time. One habit only and do not break this important rule. Most people ignore it because they don’t realize how much focus it takes to actually stick to a new habit.
62. Do not focus on results as you’re forming the habit. I’m doing three yoga poses (瑜珈动作) every morning. Doing more than an hour is too difficult for me and I tend to quit when I do long classes. Therefore, I’m only doing one thing: forming the habit of doing yoga each day. Make the habit as tiny as possible. Whatever you think you should do, cut it in half. Then, if possible, cut it in half again.
63. You might think you can change your entire diet all at once. In fact, it’s impossible. Only do the habit once a day, and again, just for a minute or two each day. Once the habit is formed, you can expand, but wait at least three weeks before you’re sure you have formed the habit already.
64. The only thing you need to do is to start. That’s the part of the habit that matters in the first month or so. Later on, you’ll run a marathon. For now, just put all your effort into putting your shoes on and getting out of the door. If you’re eating healthy, just get your healthy snack and take the first bite. If you’re writing, just open a text document, and type the first sentence.
65. It’s really important that you get positive feedback (反馈) for doing the habit right away. Many people do a habit they hate, which is built-in negative feedback, and then wonder why they can’t stick to it. Do a habit you love, or find a way to enjoy doing the habit. Focus on the positive aspects of it. Feel good about doing it. This is immediate reward and it’s necessary.

On November 10th, we went to visit the high-tech agricultural garden. It took us one and a half hours to get there. The natural environment there was very pleasant, and we could breathe fresh air. Then we visited the intelligent glass greenhouse which was really amazing. The greenhouse was controlled by a computer so that it could provide a proper temperature all year round. It was also great fun to see so many colorful fruit and vegetables which we had never seen before in the greenhouse. Luckily, we were allowed to taste some of the fruit and vegetables. We really had a good time and learned a lot.
