There was a man who worked for the post office, whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible (难辨认的) addresses. One day, a letter came to his desk, addressed in shaky handwriting, to God. He thought he should open it to see what it was about. So he opened it and read:
Dear God,
I am an 83-year-old woman, living on a very small pension (养老金). Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension check.
Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with. I have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope. Can you please help me?
Sincerely,
Edna
The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to all of the other workers. Each of them dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars. By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96.00, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman.
The rest of that day, all of the workers felt a warm glow for the kind thing they had done.
Christmas came and went. A few days later, another letter came from the old lady, again addressed to God. All of the workers gathered around when the letter was opened. It read:
Dear God,
How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a wonderful Christmas dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day.
By the way, there was $4 missing. I think it must have been those thieving idiots (白痴) at the post office.
Sincerely
Edna

In sports, getting benched (坐板凳) is usually a bad thing. But at a school in Florida, a girl has taken a bench and turned it into something entirely different — a place to find friends. It’s called the “Friendship Bench”. And it’s an idea of a girl, whose name is Acacia Woodley.
Acacia’s attitude towards life can be reflected in a question she recently asked — “What if we spend as much time on kindness as we do on cruelty?” It’s a philosophy (人生观) Acacia has learned to live her own life. She was born without a right hand. And her left hand didn’t form properly. But Acacia says that cannot stop her from achieving her dreams. “You need to believe in your dreams. If you don’t believe in your dreams, I can definitely tell you that your dreams are not going to come true,” she said.
Acacia came up with the idea after seeing kids get bullied (欺侮) at school. She says she has also experienced that — kids whispering about her or picking on her because she’s different.
The Friendship Bench looks like other benches. It has armrests and a place to lean back. But there are also words painted on it — words such as “hope”, “respect”, “listen” and “dream”. Acacia put it together with the help from her mother and brother.
Any time a kid feels like that he or she needs a friend, all that kid needs to do is sit on the bench. It is then up to other kids — or grownups — to fill that need. “It’s a perfect idea,” Lori, the principal of Palm Bay Elementary, said. “It’s something we need so badly.”
The Friendship Bench has been such a success at Palm Bay Elementary that other schools are now considering having one, too. “There’s a saying in my classroom,” Acacia said. “It says, ‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it.’”

Dear teachers,
Another school year is over. Not only may you have failed to receive real appreciation for your work, your salary and benefits (奖金) may have been cut while your working hours are increased. You may have had more students to teach and more work to finish.
It’s possible that few students thank you and tell you that something you taught them, did for them was important and meaningful and changed them and inspired them and meant the world to them. It’s also possible that few students have taken the time to thank you, because they may be so stressed and angry with endless tests, long hours sitting in a chair learning things that don’t seem important to them.
So if you haven’t received the thanks you deserve, I want to thank you publicly now. And by “you” I mean those teachers who love to teach with all their heart and soul to provide their students with what is important and necessary and beautiful and meaningful and true and good and honest. I mean those teachers who care about kids and help them achieve their big dreams. I mean those teachers who demand (要求) that their students question everything to ensure that they become the best and creative thinkers they can be. I mean those teachers who are good listeners. I mean those teachers who are passionate (充满热情的) about the subjects they teach and who cannot help but pass on that passion.
I want to thank you for doing the most important work of all — educating the next generation. The real hope of our world lies with you — how well you provide your students with the knowledge, tools, and motivation they need to be able to create a better world.
Thank you for being willing to work long hours for your small pay and low status (地位) when you surely could be making more money with less stress. Thank you for buying supplies when the school ran out of money and devoting yourself to helping your students outside of the classroom. Thank you for trying to love the ones who are hard to love because they make your days so difficult. Thank you for teaching children with patience, honesty, courage, wisdom, responsibility and generosity. Thank you for choosing teaching to be your lifelong career.
Most of all, thank you for everything you have done and will continue to do to create a better future. There is no other profession that so directly shapes the world of tomorrow. Thank you for teaching.
Have a good summer.

A.Study the new English words every day.
B. Make English-speaking friends.
C. Practise speaking English loudly to others.
D. Watch visual (视觉的) English material.
E. Find every opportunity to speak English.
F. Surround yourself with English.
How to speak English fluently
It takes a lot of hard work and patience to speak English fluently. If you don’t live in an English-speaking country, you need to make an extra effort to speak English daily.
61. To learn to speak English fluently, you need to be surrounded by the language as much as possible. The best solution would obviously be to spend time in an English-speaking country, but if that’s not possible, try to surround yourself with authentic (真实的) English material. Listen to music in English, find English radio stations online and set your computer to English. Use search engines and read the newspaper in English. Try to include as much English into your daily life as possible.
62. Move to an English-speaking country. If that’s not possible, travel to an English-speaking country regularly. Find work locally where you can speak English, for instance, at the airport, or do some volunteer work such as helping English-speaking tourists. Attend regular English classes or join the English-speaking group. Speak in English at least for 20 minutes every day. Try to sing English songs or talk to yourself in English when taking a shower.
63. It is easier to find friends through your hobbies or interests. For example, if you like cooking, study all cooking-related words and find a local English-speaking cooking group. It is easier to speak with like-minded people. Exchanging languages is a great way to learn English, too. Find English-speaking friends who are learning your native language so that you don’t need to feel that you are only using your friends to learn English.
64. Having a wide vocabulary is very useful to speak English fluently. In order to have a wide vocabulary, you’d better learn English words daily. Keep a notebook where you can write down the new English words as you learn them in context; at the end of the day, write your own sentences by using your new English words to help solidify (巩固) them in your memory.
65. Watching English commercial advertisements can be a particularly good way to improve your English fluency, since they’re short and visual. When you watch TV shows or movies, start by using English subtitles, then remove the subtitles when you feel like your comprehension has improved. Commercials, movies and TV shows are all the effective ways to learn common English expressions and idioms.

A story of Jack
Jack failed in the exam. When he got his school report, he was very worried because it should be signed by his father.
On the way home an idea appeared in his mind. When he got home, his father was reading a newspaper. Jack said to him, “Dad, can you write your name with your eyes shut?” His father replied, “Well, I can try, son! Give me a pencil and a piece of paper!”
As his father closed his eyes, Jack placed the school report on the table. His father wrote his name on “a piece of paper”, and then went on to read his newspaper. Jack was very satisfied with the school report signed by his father.
