Last July, my 12-year-old car died on California's Santa Ana Freeway. It was an hour before sunset, and I was 25 miles from home.I couldn't reach anyone to pick me up, so I decided to take a bus. Not knowing the routes, I figured I'd just head east.A bus pulled up, and I asked the driver how far she was going.“Four more lights,”she said. There was another bus I could take from there. This clearly was going to be a long night. She dropped me off at the end of her route and told me which bus to look for. After waiting 30 minutes, I began to think about a very expensive taxi ride home. Then a bus pulled up. There was no lighted number above its windshield (挡风玻璃). It was out of service. But the door opened, and I was surprised to find that it was the same driver.“I just can't leave you here,”she said.“This isn't the nicest place.I'll give you a ride home.”“You'll drive me home in the bus?”“I asked, perplexed (困惑).“No, I'll take you in my car,”she said.“It's a long way,”I protested. “Come on,”she said.“I have nothing else to do.”As we drove from the station in her car, she began telling me a story. A few days earlier, her brother had run out of gas. A good Samaritan picked him up, took him to a service station and then back to his car.“I'm just passing the favor along,”she said. When I offered her money as a thank-you,she wouldn't hear of it.“That wouldn't make it a favor,”she said.“Just do something nice for somebody.Pass it along.”

As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly relying on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes(笔画) of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more? In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widespread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It's faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that's why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking_stock_in computers increasingly, problems appear.
“When I'm writing with a pen, I find I often can't remember how to write a character, though I feel I'm familiar with it.”
“I'm not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper.”
Many students don't feel this is something to worry about. Now that it's more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite?
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, the headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital, said, “Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic(审美的) value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer's emotion. Through one's handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them.”
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的) and in universities, some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.

For high school leavers starting out in the working world, it is very important to learn particular skills and practice how to behave in an interview or how to find all internship(实习). In some countries, schools have programs to help students onto the path to work. In the Unites States, however, such programs are still few and far between.
Research shows that if high schools provide career-related courses, students are likely to get higher earnings in later years. The students are more likely to stay in school, graduate and go on to higher education.
In Germany, students as young as 13 and 14 are expected to do internships. German companies work with schools to make sure that young people get the education they need for future employment.
But in America, education reform programs focus on how well students do in exams instead of bringing them into contact with the working world. Harvard Education school professor Robert Schwartz has criticized education reformers for trying to place all graduates directly on the four-year college track. Schwartz argued that this approach leaves the country's most vulnerable(易受影响的) kids with no jobs and no skills.
Schwartz believed that the best career programs encourage kids to go for higher education while also teaching them valuable practical skills at high school. James Madison High School in New York, for example, encourages students to choose classes on career-based courses. The school then helps them gain on-the-job experience in those fields while they're still at high school.
However, even for teens whose schools encourage them to connect with work, the job market is daunting. In the US, unemployment rates for 16 to 19-year-olds are above 20 percent for the third summer in a row.
“The risk is that if teenagers miss out on the Summer job experience, they become part of this generation of teens who had trouble in landing a job, ”said Michael, a researcher in the US.

A.there is no need for kids to go for higher education in the US

I'm writing to tell about the discussion we've had in the recent class meeting about whether Senior One students should take a lot of tonics to keep fit.
Opinions are divided on the topic. Sixty percent of the students think it unnecessary to take any tonics. They hold the opinion that taking tonics will cause them to put on weight, which is bad for their health. What's more, the price of tonics is rather high.
However, forty percent of the students point out that Senior One students have a lot more homework to do every day.So many students get tired and tonics can help to refresh themselves. In addition, they can't afford time to have sports.
Personally, having right food is more important. The best way to stay healthy is to take exercise regularly.

The basenji is a central African hunting dog.It comes from a country called Chad, which is north of the Central African Republic. The basenji was well-known as the “silent dog” because for centuries no basenjis had ever been known to bark. Then at a dog show in London in 1953, a basenji actually barked.

Whether it's a carol (圣诞颂歌)service or an evening of karaoke in the pub, many people will enjoy a good old sing-song this Christmas.Singing aloud will not just lift the spirits—it's good for your physical health as well. Filling the lungs with air, increasing the heart rate and getting blood pumping round the body faster can all help our physical health.
For the past few years Heart Research UK has been running a Christmas campaign aimed at getting people singing, simply for the benefit it can bring. The organizer of the campaign says singing is a safe, simple and social activity that everyone can enjoy. “Singing is linked to long life, stress reduction, and general health protection. It also brings a great amount of happiness. It is impossible to sing well with a long face because it affects your pitch(音高).”
Professor Graham Welch, who leads the International Music Education Research Centre at the University of London, has spent more than 30 years studying the effects of singing. He says that singing is a form of exercise. It means we're also having a strong aerobic activity (有氧运动) when we're singing, which results in increasing the feeling of pleasure while decreasing that of stress.
“And communal singing—like in a singing group,a church service or even a sing-song in the pub—helps improve our sense of self-respect. It increases our sense of satisfaction with ourselves, a greater sense of feeling included.”
Helen Astrid,a singing teacher, also sees the great effects that singing brings. “It lifts us up on a spiritual level, it helps our self-respect ,and it's great for all ages from small kids to grannies—you can have a good sing and let_your_hair_down.”
But she warns people not to have too many beers or glasses of wine, though a glass may help them gather courage before taking to the stage during the holidays.

The Biggest Band in the World
The Beatles is probably the most famous pop group in the world. On radio stations across the world,a Beatles' song is being played every second of every day.The group broke up in 1970,but their music is still popular today. In fact,1966 was the group's most successful year,as the band released(发行)three new double albums, which sold over 20 million copies. Not bad for a band that split up in 1970!
The original group was made up of John Lennon,Paul McCartney,George Harrison and Pete Best, who began playing together in 1959.Three years later,in May 1962,the band signed a contract with the Parlophone Record Company. Before this, they were rejected(拒绝)by four record companies!
The Beatles' first single,“Love Me Do”,was released in October 1962.Two months before this,Ringo Starr replaced Pete Best as the drummer. The band's catchy tunes and simple love lyrics made them popular immediately. In 1963,the band became the first to have three No.1 singles and two No.1 albums in a row.
By the end of 1963,the Beatles had been the most popular group in Europe. They sold millions of records, and their fans copied their hairstyles and clothes.Their records were not available(可得到的)in America until December 1963,when their fifth single was released there.Within a month it was a US No.1.Their American record company quickly released their first four singles, and the Beatles set another record—the first group ever to hold the top five places in the American record chart at the same time.
During the next two years Europe and America went crazy for the Beatles. The group played hundreds of sell-out concerts all over the world. In August 1965,they set another record by playing to the largest ever concert audience—55,600 people. When they played their last public performance a year later, they had recorded a further eight No.1 singles in the US.From 1966 until 1970,the Beatles released six more albums and all of them went to No.1 in the charts. In 1970,the band split up.
Sadly,John Lennon, was shot dead outside his apartment building in New York in December 1980.The remaining three Beatles occasionally(偶尔)released new records.Nothing they do,however, can compare with the extraordinary work of the Beatles.
