篇71 I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library.
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaning in my life. I had several children and books were our main source(来源) of entertainment. It was a big deal for us to load up and go to the local library, where my kids could pick out books to read or books they wanted me to read to them.
I always read, using different voices, as though I were acting out the stories with my voice and they loved it! It was a special time to bond with my children and it filled them with the wonderment of books.
Now, I see my children taking their children to the library and I love that the excitement of going to the library lives on from generation to generation.
As a novelist, I've found a new relationship with libraries. I encourage readers to go to their local library when they can't afford to purchase a book. I see libraries as a safe haven(避风港) for readers and writers, a bridge that helps put together a reader with a book. Libraries, in their own way, help fight book piracy(盗版行为) and I think all writers should support libraries in a significant way when they can. Encourage readers to use the library. Share library announcements on your social media. Frequent them and talk about them when you can.

篇72 Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知)after controlling for differences in parents' income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
"The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes," Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.
The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.

篇73 China landed a spacecraft on Mars for the first time last Saturday. This makes China the first country to make a successful landing on Mars on its first mission to Mars. China's Zhurong rover (探测车), named after a traditional Chinese fire god, has touched down on the martian surface, the China National Space Administration confirmed on the morning of Saturday, May 15.
The rover is part of the Tian wen-1 mission, which consists of an orbiter, a probe, and a lander. The mission was launched in summer last year, and took seven months to complete its journey to the red planet. It arrived at Mars in February this year, and since then the spacecraft has been performing operations such as capturing images of Mars.
Believe it or not, traveling to Mars is actually the easy part of such a mission. The truly hard part is landing on the planet's surface, as landers must contend with factors like the planet's thin atmosphere, its variable dust storms, and a communication delay between Mars and Earth. This delay makes it impossible for people in mission control on Earth to control a craft in real time as it approaches the planet, so the landing must be performed autonomously.
To slow its speed as the lander approached the surface, it used both a parachute (降落伞) and a retrorocket (减速火箭) in its own "seven minutes of terror" as it moved through the atmosphere. It then landed in the Utopia Planitia area, a large impact basin, part of which was exploded by NASA's Viking 2 lander in the 1970s.
According to China's slate news agency Xinhua, President Xi Jinping said he was sending "warm congratulations and sincere greetings to all members who have participated in the Mars exploration mission."
The rover will now begin its three-month mission to explore the Utopia Planitia area, where it will be searching for surface and subsurface ice. The mission will involve both the rover and the orbiter working in concert to create a map of water ice, with the orbiter focusing on the planet's polar regions.
(1) Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A. The Tianwen-1 mission includes four space missions.
B. Zhurong was known as a great astronomer in ancient China.

d.The communication delay.
A. abc
B. bed
C. abd
D. abcd
(3) What does the author imply in Paragraph 4
A. The landing way is quite different.
B. The landing process is full of danger.
C. The landing site is unknown to NASA.

篇74 When people ask me how I started writing,I find myself describing an urgent need that I felt to work with language.Having said that,I did not know for a long time what I was looking for.It was not until I followed this feeling to its source that I discovered I had a passion for writing. With some encouragement from my colleagues,I had one of my poems published. This bit of success, however, was the point where my problem began.
Back in 1978,I had to travel between three different campuses in the morning, teaching freshman composition.Afternoons I spent taking my daughter to her ballet and horse-riding lessons.I composed my lectures on the way,and that was all the thinking time I had. When I returned home, there was not enough of me left for writing after a full working day.
As a way out,I decided to get up two hours before my usual time.My alarm was set for 5:00 A.M.The first day I shut it off because I had placed it within arm's reach. The second day I set two clocks, one on my night table, and one out in the hallway.I had to jump out of bed and run to silence it before my family was awoken. This was when my morning writing began.
Since that first morning in 1978,I have been following the habit to this day,not making or accepting many excuses for not writing.I wrote my poems in this manner for nearly ten years before my first book was published. When I decided to write a novel,I divided my two hours:the first for poetry, the second for fiction.Well or badly,I wrote at least two pages a day. This is how my novel,The Line of the Sun.was finished. If I had waited to have the time,I would still be waiting to write my novel.
What I got out of getting up in the dark to work is the feeling that I am in control. For many people, the initial sense of urgency to create easily dies away because it requires making the tough decision:taking the time to create, stealing it from yourself if ifs the only way.

篇75 About five weeks ago, I noticed the skin of our pet lizard (蜥蜴) was growing dusty. It worried me. I reported the strange surface on the skin of the lizard to my husband and children the next morning. Seconds later, our lizard emerged from its tank with its old skin flowing behind it.
I didn't think about it much until a morning last week when I knocked my favorite teapot off the table. It burst into hundreds of pieces. As I swept up the mess, I wondered why we had been breaking so many things over the months.
The destruction started three months ago. It was my husband's birthday. He had just lost his job. The uncertainty was starting to wear on us, so I wanted to do something special.
"Let's make a cake for Dad!" I cried.
My kids screamed with joy. We baked, iced and sprinkled for most of the day. Candles on the cake! Balloons on the walls! Flowers on the table!
Two hours before my husband came back home from another job interview, my daughter climbed up to grab a glass vase from a high shelf. It fell and crashed beside the cake. Tiny pieces of glass were everywhere. She sobbed loudly as I threw the cake away. My husband had banana pudding for his birthday.
Three days ago, the light in our living room suddenly went out. After several frustrating hours of unsuccessful attempts to fix it, my husband suggested watching the Michael Jordan documentary (纪录片) series The Last Dance.
The poignancy (酸楚) of Jordan retiring from his beloved basketball to play baseball and what had pushed him to make such a tough decision took me by surprise. As I watched him take off his basketball uniform and replace it with a baseball uniform, I saw him leaving behind the layer that no longer served him, just as our lizard had. Neither of them chose the moment that had transformed them. But they had to live with who they were after everything was different. Just like us. I realized that we have to learn to leave the past behind.
Humans do not shed skin (蜕皮) as easily as other animals. The beginning of change is upsetting. The process is tiring. Damage changes us before we are ready. I see our lizard, raw and nearly new.
Jordan said that no matter how it ends, it starts with hope. With our tender, hopeful skin, that is where we begin.

篇76 As a senior high school student, my future is always on my mind. To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford's graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future.
It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It's the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since everything turned out well.
This doesn't mean that students shouldn't attend college, but rather that they shouldn't worry so much. You'll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding than you'd like.
Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don't panic. One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted the saying "Stay hungry, stay foolish" and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you've learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated.
Steve Jobs' level of success is possible to achieve, and I aim to prove that. With the willpower to go into the world living every day like my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I'll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for.

篇78 Ojok Okello's dream to build a city in his father's home village began with a small house. When he set foot there in Northern Uganda for the first time in 2013, he wanted to build a small mud brick house where he could spend time with his extended family in Okere. But the poverty of his dad's village nagged at him.
So in 2018 he returned. By that time, he'd earned a master's degree in rural development, where he studied up on various kinds of aid projects. International projects often didn't work in places like Northern Uganda, he'd begun to realize, because they saw locals as recipients, not cooperators. So when he decided to help rebuild Okere, he believed it had to be done differently.
He began asking locals what their most pressing challenges were. At the time, the nearest school was 2.5 miles away, and had few teachers and books.
So Mr. Okello took out his savings and in 2019 began building a small kindergarten. Later, he began another program to help adults learn to read and write. This fall, after Okere residents said they needed a way to make money, Mr. Okello began to experiment with processing small nuts, which residents mostly women—collect and turn into butter for cooking and cosmetics.
But his project has run into some of the same challenges as other development projects in the region. It needs money. To date, almost all of the project has been funded by Mr. Okello's savings. He's open to donor support, as long as donors are willing to back what the community says and needs rather than impose their own agenda. And so far, he's had some donors. But the question of funding remains a lasting one. Mr. Okello says he plans to keep using his own money until he has none left to give. "New York City was built by someone. Okere will also be built." he says. "The most important thing is that its foundation has already been laid."

篇79 A recent study found that experiencing or even just anticipating uplifting events in daily life was related to feeling less depressed that same day.The study, conducted by Professor Lisa Starr at University of Rochester, found that a decrease in depression was especially marked when the experience included interpersonal uplifts, such as participating in fun activities with friends or family.
A number of laboratory-based studies suggest that the mood of people with depression is relatively unresponsive to positive stimuli(刺激物) .In other words, when people with depression experience a positive event in the laboratory ----like receiving a financial reward---- their mood is unlikely to improve markedly. The issue here is that laboratory research doesn't always translate to real-life settings.
The Rochester study is one of a growing number of studies examining how real life events with direct relevance to study participants affect their mood. The authors wanted to know if people with different levels of depression felt better when good things happened to them.the answer is simple----yes.The same is true for the expectation of good things to come.
The study included 157 young adults of whom two-thirds had mild, moderate,or severe depressive symptoms. The remaining third had no symptoms, allowing the authors to examine whether the level of depressive symptoms changes the way people respond to positive experiences. The study subjects completed a two-week online diary, tracking their mood as it related to recent and anticipated positive events in their lives----like time spent with friends,or exercising.
Those who reported higher levels of depressive symptoms at the beginning of the study, showed stronger associations between daily uplifts and lower daily depressive symptoms, particularly when the uplifts were interpersonal in nature.
"The findings have really important implications for treatment and are with a treatment model called Behavioral Activation, which suggests that if you can help depressed people to0 engage in positive experiences----despite their low motivation to do so----their mood may improve," says Starr. In other words:If you' re feeling seriously blue, make an effort to do something fun with friends.

篇80 The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smartphones, writing by hand has become something of a nostalgic (怀旧的) skill. However, while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful — both in school and in life.
Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand.
Berninger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks — both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2009,found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate.
In a more recent study,Berninger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills and found that how well children spell is tied to how well they can write.“Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active, which helps us access our vocabulary, word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.”Berninger said.
Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to transcribe (转换) “those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,”the study said.Seeing the words in the “ mind's_ eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Berninger, but also to spot (发现) spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time.
“In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks,”she said.“But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer.”

篇72(2021·天津市·模拟题) Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.

篇73(2022·天津市·模拟题) China landed a spacecraft on Mars for the first time last Saturday.
The mission will involve both the rover and the orbiter working in concert to create a map of water ice, with the orbiter focusing on the planet's polar regions.

c.The landing instructions.
d.The communication delay.
A. abc
B. bed
C. abd
D. abcd
(3) What does the author imply in Paragraph 4
A. The landing way is quite different.
B. The landing process is full of danger.
C. The landing site is unknown to NASA.
D. The landing time is calculate precisely.
(4) Which of the following missions will be launched in three months
A. The analysis of ice samples.
B. The mapping of the Mars's polar regions.
C. The exploration of the Utopia Planitia area.
D. The collection of surface and subsurface ice.

篇74(2021·天津市·模拟题)When people ask me how I started writing,I find myself describing an urgent need that I felt to work with language.Having said that,I did not know for a long time what I was looking for.It was not until I followed this feeling to its source that I discovered I had a passion for writing.

篇75(2021·天津市·模拟题) About five weeks ago, I noticed the skin of our pet lizard (蜥蜴) was growing dusty.
(1) What can we learn about the pet lizard from Paragraph 1
A. Its tank grew dirty.
B. Its old skin came off.
C. It got a skin disease.
D. It went missing.
(2) Why did the author's husband have banana pudding for his birthday
A. The birthday cake was ruined.
B. The author made good puddings.
C. Pudding was his favorite dessert.
D. They couldn't afford a birthday cake.
(3) Why does the author mention The Last Dance in the passage
A. To prove a theory.
B. To define a concept.
C. To develop the theme.
D. To provide the background.
(4) The underlined part "leaving behind the layer" in Paragraph 8 can be understood as ______.
A. letting go of the past
B. looking for a new job
C. getting rid of a bad habit
D. giving up an opportunity
(5) What does the author most likely want to tell us
A. Love of family helps us survive great hardships.
B. It's not the end of the world if we break things.
C. We should move on no matter what happens.
D. Past experiences should be treasured.

篇76(2019·天津市·模拟题)As a senior high school student, my future is always on my mind.

篇78(2022·天津市·模拟题) Ojok Okello's dream to build a city in his father's home village began with a small house.

篇79(2022·天津市·模拟题)A recent study found that experiencing or even just anticipating uplifting events in daily life was related to feeling less depressed that same day.The study, conducted by Professor Lisa Starr at University of Rochester, found that a decrease in depression was especially marked when the experience included interpersonal uplifts, such as participating in fun activities with friends or family.

篇80(2019·天津市·模拟题)The practice of students endlessly copying letters and sentences from a blackboard is a thing of the past.
