At my heaviest, my weight rose to 160 pounds. My mother criticized(批评) me when she noticed my weight reaching 110 pounds. I thought she was unhappy when considering I was thin while she was beyond fat, but her words made me fear getting fat. I started freaking when my weight passed 130 pounds. Last fall, my doctor suggested that I walk my dogs more.
My weight at that time was 141 pounds. He told me that I could lose weight by walking my dogs. Over the winter months, despite my careful eating, my weight increased to 160 pounds and I noticed my jeans were then a size 12. I also noticed that my mastiff (大型驯犬) was out of control. She is a big dog and requires a great deal of exercise. My young Lhasa Apso was getting as lazy as I was, so I made a decision to walk both of them every day.
Every morning, after most people in the neighborhood go to work and after I finish my first few articles, I walk both of my dogs. They both love walk time and I love to walk them. The neighbors have got used to seeing us take our morning walk. They wave, walk out, and pet the dogs and then we move on.
I started out at 160 pounds and I'm getting closer to 130 pounds. I am proud of the fact that I have lost so much weight. My husband is proud, too. I am looking forward to comfortably fitting myself into a size 8 and maybe even finally dropping to a size 6.

(2013·辽宁高考)Here is an astonishing and significant fact: Mental work alone can't make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳).To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer,we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素)and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein,it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned,it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional (情感的) attitudes. One of England's most outstanding scientists,J.A.Hadfield,says,“The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr.Brill,a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares,“One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired?Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry,a feeling of not being appreciated—those are the emotions that tire sitting workers.Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body.
52.What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
A.Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer's blood.
B.Albert Einstein didn't feel worn out after a day's work.
C.The brain could work for many hours without fatigue.
D.A mental worker's blood was filled with fatigue toxins.
53.According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired?
A.Challenging mental work.
B.Unpleasant emotions.
C.Endless tasks.
D.Physical labor.
54.What's the author's attitude towards the scientists' ideas?
A.He agrees with them.
B.He doubts them.
C.He argues against them.
D.He hesitates to accept them.
55.We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ________.
A.have some good food
B.enjoy their work
C.exercise regularly
D.discover fatigue toxins
Ⅳ.任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
(2013·阜阳一中高一下期中)Homework is a great way for kids to develop independent, lifelong learning skills, so here are some general homework tips for parents:
●Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to do homework.
Avoid having your child do homework with the television on or in places with other distractions, such as people coming and going.
●Make sure the materials your child needs, such as some paper, pencils and a dictionary, are available.
Ask your child if special materials will be needed for some projects and get them in advance.
●Help your child with time management.
Establish a set time each day for doing homework. Don't let your child leave homework until just before bedtime. Think about using a weekend morning or afternoon for working on big projects, especially if the project involves getting together with classmates.
●Be positive about homework.
Tell your child how important school is. The attitude you express about homework will be the attitude your child acquires.
●When your child asks for help, provide guidance, not answers.
Giving answers means your child will not learn the material. Too much help teaches your child that when the going gets rough, someone will do the work for him or her.
Cooperation with the teacher. It shows your child that the school and home are a team. Follow the directions given by the teacher.
●Reward progress in homework.
If your child has been successful in homework completion and is working hard, celebrate that success with a special event (e.g. pizza, a walk, a trip to the park) to reinforce the positive effort.

Welcome to fishermen's household hotels in Rizhao.
The household hotel is nice to stay in. Not only can you learn about China clearly, but you can also feel at home as well by dining with the family for only 20 yuan a day. Of course you can cook by yourself if the menu doesn't meet your need.
It is really cheap to live in a single room for 20 yuan a day and a double room for 30 yuan each. You can bathe and swim in the sea, climb the hill and do unpaid jobs in the greenhouse if you'd like to.

Healthy Habits, Healthy Body
Feel tired lately? Has a doctor said he can't find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong with you.
Then, consider this: you might be in a state of subhealth(亚健康).
Subhealth, also called the third state or gray state, is explained as a borderline state between health and disease.
According to the investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam-weeks.
Symptoms(症状) include a lack of energy, depression(压抑), slow reactions, insomnia(失眠), agitation, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.
The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work and rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.
As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruit and fish because they are rich in nutritional elements—vitamins and trace elements that are important to the body.
Nutrition(营养) experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive tract(消化系统). They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subhealth.

Ⅲ.阅读理解
A
Do you have any skiing equipment you no longer need?A ski school in the far north of India could put it to good use.
In March we published a photo story about the extraordinary Zanskar region in northern India, which is cut off from the outside world for more than seven months of the year, and only accessible(可通行的) via a frozen river. We also included information about the limited use of skiing in the region and the recent creation of the Zanskar Ski School:
“Despite the difficulties of travelling through the region when the snow comes, skiing hasn't traditionally been used as a means of transport by the locals, largely because trees don't grow here,so there is little in the way of raw materials from which to make skis.In 1995,a group of British scientists in the region noticed the lack of skis and one of them returned to set up the Zanskar Ski School in Padam. The school provides lessons for a small fee and rents skis to the local people.Among the benefits that the school hopes to bring are improved education—children often find it difficult to get to school through the deep snow—and the possibility of offering ski tours to tourists in the future. So far, more than 300 local people have received training, and local doctors and policemen regularly borrow skis.”
But what we weren't able to include in the article is that the ski school is always on the look out for old skiing equipment—particularly of a size suitable for children—and,I thought. Now the European ski season is drawing to a close, there might be a few of you out there who have some old equipment you'd like to see go to a good home.If that's the case you can get in touch with the school via their website www.zanskarski school.org.
