A
Only a few people in Toronto have the luck to live within walking distance from their workplace. For the rest of us, commuting(乘车上下班) is a rather unpleasant daily necessity.
So how do you avoid a traffic jam in Toronto? You can do it in the old way and listen to one of the radio stations that give regular updates about the traffic situation in Toronto's streets. Seeing the big picture of Toronto's traffic and knowing when and where heavy traffic occurs is a must. From my own experience, there are situations where a quick decision can help you make it in time for an event or a meeting. That's why we prepared three short videos showing the overall traffic situation in Toronto from dawn to night. You can click them and watch.
With the help of “Google Maps”, where you can watch the live traffic density all over the world and average traffic data based on past conditions, we were able to provide you with traffic maps for a typical(平常的) Friday.
Friday traffic in Toronto is quite fast in the early morning, with only a few hot spots showing up at the major junctions(交叉点) at 7:00 a.m. The morning traffic jam starts light at 7:30 and the traffic gradually slows down to reach a breaking point at 8:30. The roads are quite free afterwards, only Allen Road is likely to be jammed around lunchtime from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. It comes as no surprise that Friday afternoon brings heavy traffic as early as 1:00 p.m., mainly on the Don Valley Parkway. You won't have a good time getting away from the city from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., as there is a good chance to get caught in a traffic jam. The traffic in Toronto is quite heavy on a Friday night. I hope you will have a nice Friday night in the city and a safe journey home this Friday!
36.By saying “commuting is a rather unpleasant daily necessity”, the writer refers to the fact that________.
A.buses are usually very crowded
B.they are often stuck in traffic jams

A.do nothing but to wait patiently
B.report your situation to a radio station
C.relax and enjoy some good radio programs
D.make a quick decision and find another way to go
38.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.What the traffic in Toronto is like for a typical Friday.
B.How to avoid heavy traffic on Friday.
C.Why the traffic is terrible on Friday.
D.What “Google Maps” can do for us.
39.In Toronto, on Friday you are most likely to suffer heavy traffic________.
A.from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.
B.from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
C.from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
D.from4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.

(2013·湖北高考)Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be a usual activity. I would return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day's events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. I did not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but I gained a certain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn't accumulating memories a way of preserving the past?
When I was thirteen years old, I went on a long journey on foot in a great valley,well-equipped with pens,a diary, and a camera. During the trip, I was busy recording every incident, name and place I came across. I felt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, I wandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the glare of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen....
At that point, I understood that nothing I wrote could ever match or replace the few seconds I allowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All I remembered of the previous few days were the dull characterizations I had set down in my diary.
Now,I only write in my diary when I need to write down a special thought or feeling. I still love to record ideas and quotations that strike me in books,or observations that are particularly meaningful. I take pictures, but not very often—only of objects I find really beautiful. I'm no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when I grow old. I realize that life will simply pass me by if I stay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.
I don't want to wake up one day and have nothing but a pile of pictures and notes. Maybe I won't have as many exact representations of people and places; maybe I'll forget certain facts, but at least the experiences will always remain inside me. I don't live to make memories—I just live, and the memories form themselves.

A.A dull night on the journey.

54.What does the author put in her diary now?
A.Notes and beautiful pictures.
B.Special thoughts and feelings.
C.Detailed accounts of daily activities.
D.Descriptions of unforgettable events.
55.The author comes to realize that to live a meaningful life is________.
A.to experience it

(2013·望江中学高一下期中)Third-generation mobile phones, known as 3G, are the next big step for the telecom industry. Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker than that in present technology. This means users can have high-speed Internet access and enjoy video and CD-quality music on their phones.
“Mobile data is not a dream; it's not an option but a requirement,” said Len Lauer, head of a US communications company, Sprint PCS, at a 3G conference in Bangkok earlier this month.
With 3G, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday's news; a 3G phone can receive video news programs, updated four times a day. Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.
Face-to-face video calls
Don't worry about getting lost. 3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by pressing a few keys on your handset.
However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live two-way video communication, you can have face-to-face talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.
Many European countries have already launched the service. In May 2000 the US government issued five licenses to run 3G wireless services, while the first 3G phones arrived in Italy in March this year.
International telecom companies can't wait to sell 3G in China, the world's largest mobile telecommunications market. But they will have to be patient. At the moment, China is busy testing its 3G-based technologies, networks and services. This will be followed by a trial period before the phones can finally hit the shops.
“We need to create a pool of 3G customers before the large-scale commercial launch of the service,” said Fan Yunjun, marketing manager for Beijing Mobile. “We expect that the 3G licenses will be seen late next year.”

New Zealand has good weather in all seasons. December, January and February are her summer months and June,July and August are her winter months. In New Zealand, however, it is not very hot in summer and not very cold in winter. The highest temperature is only a little above 25℃ in Auckland, which is the “hottest” in summer in the country. The lowest temperature in New Zealand's winter does not reach zero centigrade, which measures above 5℃. From summer to winter, the greatest change in temperature is in Queenstown. Because of its good weather, New Zealand is a wonderful place for a visit.

The Canadian red and white maple leaf(枫叶) flag is officially called the National Flag of Canada. The Canadian flag shows a stylized red maple leaf with 11 points on a white background, with red borders down each side. The Canadian flag is twice as long as it is wide. The white square containing the red maple leaf is the same width as the flag.
The red and the white used in the National Flag of Canada were proclaimed the official colors of Canada in 1921 by King George Ⅴ. Although the maple leaf did not have its official status as a symbol of Canada until the announcement of the national flag in 1965, it had historically been used as a Canadian symbol, and was used in 1860 in decorations for the visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada. The 11 points on the maple leaf have no special significance.
In the early days, the Royal Union Flag,or the Union Jack, was still flown in British North America. In 1925 and again in 1946, the Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King tried to get a national flag of Canada adopted, but failed. In 1964,Prime Minister Lester Pearson appointed a 15-member, all-party committee to come up with a design for a new flag. The committee was given six weeks to complete its task.
The committee studied 2,000 submitted(提交的) designs as well as 3,900 that had been gathered as a result of the 1946 committee's study. Those designs with a chance of being accepted were given to the full committee for further study.
The suggestion of a red and white single maple leaf design for the Canadian flag came from George Stanley, a professor at the Royal Military College. After a heated discussion, they finally decided on his suggestion.

(2013·辽宁高考)China is a land of bicycles. At least it was back in 1992 when I traveled the country.Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle.Millions of them, all black.Cars were rare.Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year,I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many,it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today.Bicycles also come in different colors-silver,green,red,blue,yellow,whatever you want.
It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks (人行道).Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.
Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture,I decided to buy a bicycle.Great weather accompanied my great buy.I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.
My first ride home was orderly (守秩序的).To be safe,I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times.I didn't want to get hit.So I took the ride carefully.
Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide,so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.
I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful.I was sitting on top of the world as I passed by places and people.Biking made me feel alive.
5.According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?
A.Because they are traditional and safe.
B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.
C.Because they are colorful and available.
D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.

A.to ride it for fun
B.to use it for transport
C.to experience local culture
D.to improve his riding skills
7.How did the author feel about his street crossing?
A.It was boring. B.It was difficult.
C.It was lively. D.It was wonderful.
8.Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience?

B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.
C.The author was praised by the other bikers.
D.The author took great pleasure in biking.

根据第一段中的“For many,it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today.”
根据第三段第一句话“Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture...”

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew that at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes, waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia(马来西亚). I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or by car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly(特别地) relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 p.m. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug(拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten(饱经风霜的) face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

Ⅰ.1.chat 2.measures 3.borders 4.surrounded 5.baggage 6.scenery 7.aboard 8.within 9.continent 10.westward
Ⅱ.1.B rather than连接平行结构,由句子中的waiting for...
2.B succeed意为“成功”,不接动词不定式,常用词组succeed in doing sth.;try to do sth. 表示“设法做到某事”;think不接to do sth. 由句中but they didn't make it可知此事没有成功,因此答案为tried。
3.A 词组have a gift for的含义是“在……
4.D chat with sb. see是及物动词,不与介词with搭配;say常与to连用,构成词组say to sb.;share可与with sb.连用,但常用于share sth. with sb.。
5.C within easy reach“很容易拿到”。
abroad“在国外”;get off“下车”;get up“起床”。
settle down to“定下心来做”;put down“记下,放下”;sit down“坐下”。
catch sight of看见;watch out for密切注意;pay attention to关注;get away with偷走。
第一空用a表示某一,第二空因为有后置定语between the two countries因此用the。
又The United States相对应的形容词性物主代词为its而不是their,从而排除C项(Their)。
2.C 由上文的to the north可以推出墨西哥在美国南部也应该用to。
8.A 根据“As the nation...on the flag”一句可以推知,国旗上每颗星代表一个州。star“星”;moon“月亮”;satellite“卫星”;planet“行星”。
9.A 句子的主语为all the states,因此可把表示单数的was和is排除。
disappear“消失”;appear“出现”;paint“粉刷,画画”;print“印刷”。
13.C of可以表示其前后的词或词组是同位关系,如:the city of Beijing(北京市),因此答案为C项。
16.A in numbers意为“大批地”,在结构上与first并列。
19.B 根据句子中的more like可推知答案应为than。
Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth可知火车在Butterworth停下来。
Ⅴ.1.We will have the meeting in the classroom rather than in the great hall. 2.Our classroom measures seven meters across/wide. 3.To some, happiness is being surrounded by family and friends. 4.He lay on his back, his hands crossed under his head. 5.He managed to get the work done without any help.
