(2013·四川高考)Home to me means a sense of familiarity and nostalgia(怀旧). It's fun to come home. It looks the same. It smells the same. You'll realize what's changed is you. Home is where we can remember pain, love, and some other experiences: We parted here; My parents met here; I won three championships here.
If I close my eyes, I can still have a clear picture in mind of my first home. I walk in the door and see a brown sofa surrounding a low glass-top wooden table. To the right of the living room is my first bedroom. It's empty, but it's where my earliest memories are.
There is the dining room table where I celebrated birthdays, and where I cried on Halloween—when I didn't want to wear the skirt my mother made for me. I always liked standing on that table because it made me feel tall and strong. If I sit at this table,I can see my favorite room in the house,my parents' room. It is simple:a brown wooden dresser lines the right side of the wall next to a television and a couple of photos of my grandparents on each side. Their bed is my safe zone. I can jump on it anytime—waking up my parents if I am scared or if I have an important announcement that cannot wait until the morning.
I'm lucky because I know my first home still exists. It exists in my mind and heart,on a physical property(住宅) on West 64th street on the western edge of Los Angeles. It is proof I lived, I grew, and I learned.
Sometimes when I feel lost, I lie down and shut my eyes, and I go home. I know it's where I'll find my family, my dogs, and my belongings. I purposely leave the window open at night because I know I'll be blamed by Mom. But I don't mind, because I want to hear her say my name, which reminds me I'm home.
31.Why does the author call her parents' bed her “safe zone” (Paragraph 3) ?
A.It is her favorite place to play.

32.What can be learned from the passage?
A.The old furniture is still in the author's first bedroom.
B.The author can still visit her first physical home in Los Angeles.
C.The author's favorite room in her first home is the dining room.
D.Many people of the author's age can still find their first physical homes.
33.Sometimes when she feels lost, the author will________.
A.open the window at night
B.lie down in bed to have a dream
C.try to bring back a sense of home

34.What is the author's purpose of writing this passage?
A.To express how much she is attached to her home.

Farmers are being told more needs to be done to stop them injuring at work. One in five British workplace deaths happens in agriculture even though farmers are only a small part of the working population.During the year 2010/11 there were 1,061 injuries in total and it is thought many more go unreported.
Jim Chapman from Warwickshire had his arm torn off by farm machinery seven years ago when he was 23.“You don't realize how much you rely on your second arm until it's gone,”he said.He fell against a PTO shaft(传动轴),a spinning metal bar at the back of a tractor.“It catapulted(猛力掷出) me from one side of the machine to the other,”he said.“I landed on the floor, minus all my clothing. My left arm had been ripped off.”He admits that the machinery was missing part of its proper safety guard.“But again,”he added,“it was a rushed day. There were a few machines that didn't work. Also,I was getting behind with the jobs.”
Over the last 10 years, other industries that you'd think of as dangerous, like building or quarrying(矿采),have lowered the number of workplace deaths and injuries. In the farming industry though, deaths remain high with 34 deaths in 2010/11.
Judith Hackitt, the chair of the Health and Safety Executive(HSE) says it is “not acceptable” that the accident statistics for farming are still high.“People in farming don't have minor(较小的) injuries. When they get injured,it's bad.”she said.“When I said to the National Farmers' Union(NFU) that if I had sons I would not want them to work in agriculture,it really made them sit up and take notice.”There's a whole host of reasons why farming is as dangerous as it is.It is a very rough industry. Also,it's often because people are left alone. They could be young and inexperienced,or older people, who would have retired maybe 5 or 10 years ago in other industries.
Jim wants others to learn from his experience.“Look at what you're doing before you go running in,”he said.“You could make a mistake that you'll live with for the rest of your life.”

A.regretful B.angry

Our culture has caused most Americans to assume not only that our language is universal but that the gestures we use are understood by everyone. We do not realize that waving goodbye is the way to summon a person from the Philippines to one's side,or that in Italy and some Latin-American countries, curling the finger to oneself is a sign of farewell.
Those private citizens who sent packages to our troops occupying Germany after World War Ⅱ and marked them GIFT to escape duty payments did not bother to find out that“Gift” means poison in German. Moreover,we like to think of ourselves as friendly, yet we prefer to be at least 3 feet or an arm's length away from others.Latins and Middle Easterners like to come closer and touch, which makes Americans uncomfortable.
Our linguistic(语言的)and cultural blindness and the casualness with which we take notice of the developed tastes, gestures, customs and languages of other countries, are losing our friends, business and respect in the world.
Even here in the United States,we make few concessions(让步) to the needs of foreign visitors. There are no information signs in four languages on our public buildings or monuments;we do not have multilingual (多语的) guided tours.Very few restaurant menus have translations, and multilingual waiters, bank clerks and policemen are rare. Our transportation systems have maps in English only and often we ourselves have difficulty understanding them.
When we go abroad,we tend to stay in hotels and restaurants where English is spoken. The attitudes and information we pick up are conditioned by those natives—usually the richer—who speak English. Our business dealings,as well as the nation's diplomacy (外交),are conducted through interpreters.
For many years,America and Americans could get by with cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance. After all,America was the most powerful country of the free world, the distributor(分发者)of needed funds and goods.
But all that is past.American dollars no longer buy all good things, and we are slowly beginning to realize that our proper role in the world is changing.A 1979 Harris poll reported that 55 percent of Americans want this country to play a more significant role in world affairs; we want to have a hand in the important decisions of the next century, even though it may not always be the upper hand.
39.It can be inferred that Americans being approached too closely by Middle Easterners would most probably________.
A.stand still B.jump aside
C.step forward D.draw back
40.In countries other than their own, most Americans ________.
A.are isolated by the local people
B.are not well informed due to the language barrier
C.tend to get along well with the natives
D.need interpreters in hotels and restaurants
41.According to the author,Americans' cultural blindness and linguistic ignorance will________.
A.affect their image in the new era
B.cut themselves off from the outside world
C.limit their role in world affairs
D.weaken the position of the US dollar
42.The author intends to make Americans realize that it is ________.
A.dangerous to ignore their foreign friends
B.important to maintain their leading role in world affairs
C.necessary to use several languages in public places
D.time to get familiar with other cultures

We're in the middle of winter. It's cold and we're suffering from cold wind and rain. The sun, even when it does show its face,is setting at 4 p.m.It's no wonder people in the street look sad.
But according to most of the research on the connection between weather and mood(情绪),they shouldn't be.Weather has little effect on mood.
When you tell people this, though, they don't believe it.Most of us think the weather has quite a strong effect on our mood. Many think that the rain and cold weather dejects us and the sun and warmth cheers us up.
So why don't we see this effect in the research? That's the question a new study by Klimstra et al.tries to answer with a group of young people and their mothers. In fact,Klimstra et al.found four different groups:
1.Unaffected:about half the people in their study fell into this group. For these people it didn't matter that much whether it was raining or sunny, hot or cold, their mood was mostly unaffected.
2.Summer lovers:here's the group you'd expect. For these people, their mood improved with less rain, more sun and higher temperatures(15% of young people and 30% of their mothers).
3.Summer haters:here's the group of people you hear less about. These were the exact opposite of the summer lovers so they were happier when there was more rain, less sun and lower temperatures (27% of the young people and 12% of their mothers).
4.Rain haters:this group's mood didn't change with the temperature, sunshine or the wind;they just hated the rain(8% of young people and 12% of their mothers).
This helps explain why studies keep finding that weather doesn't have much effect on mood:it's because we're different and these differences are mostly being averaged out.
43. It's found in the study that ________.
A.weather has a strong effect on mood
B.cold wind and rain makes us look sad
C.the sun and warmth cheers us up
D.mood is little affected by weather

A.about half the people belong to summer lovers
B.more than one third of the people are summer haters
C.few of young people and their mothers like the rain
D.more young people are unaffected than rain haters
46.What is the BEST title for the passage?
A.Does the weather really affect your mood?
B.Why do people feel sad in cold winter?
C.How many different groups are there?
D.Do different people have different mood?

(2013·重庆高考)It is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson's famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson's observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most commentators fail to come up with a convincing explanation for this English weather-speak.
Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.
Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.
Bryson and Paxman stand for common misconceptions about the weather-speak among the English. Both commentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.

A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather
B.there is nothing special about the English weather
C.the English weather attracts people to the British Isles

50.What is the author's main purpose of writing the passage?

In recent years, fast food and festivals in western countries have been more and more popular with us Chinese people.
Some people think the phenomenon is good for the development of our culture. We can absorb and make the most of the good points existing in the western cultures.Only when we hold this attitude can we develop our culture more healthily.
But others think the diversity of the cultures will make people's values confused. As a result, the normal order of our society will be affected.Meanwhile, our own outstanding traditions will be greatly influenced.
In my opinion,we should respect and understand other countries' different traditions.Besides,we should strengthen the education of the public, especially the younger generation. Therefore,we can maintain our own virtues, and accept the others' good points. Then we can create a harmonious society.

The first big wave of Chinese immigration to America came when gold was discovered in California in 1848.The Chinese called the new land“Mountain of Gold”.Those who did not become miners found work in railroad construction, farming and light industries, doing low paid jobs.By the 1880s,American industrialization brought changing economic realities, resulting in an explosion of resentment (仇恨) toward the Chinese laborers. They were accused of taking jobs away from the white men.The government issued Exclusion Acts(《排外法案》)to stop the immigration of Chinese laborers into the United States. Many workers fled from the concentrated Chinese communities in the West and then went to the Mid?west and the East.As in California, they formed small pockets of Chinese culture that were known as “Chinatowns”.
New York's Chinatown was created by men such as the Chinese laborers.Sociologists call them “sojourners”—foreigners in the United States, keeping to their cultural traditions, living in the larger society in which they existed. The sojourners came to America for the promise of supporting his family in China, where he expected to return one day. Those who did stay lived separately from the society. So they remained in Chinatown,an enclosed community holding on to traditions among the tides of change.

Miami has worn many tags(标签) through the past decades. But art was never high on the list. But,in 2002,Art Basel made Miami Beach its American home, bringing with it an international scene of lots of art dealers, collectors, critics and art lovers. This art fair lasts less than a week a year but it is one of the biggest in the world.
“Art Basel gave Miami the power to believe in itself, and that's always a problem with regional(地方性的) art places,”said Mera Rubell,a Miami collector who, along with her husband,Don,owns the Rubell Family Collection.“The influence that it has all year round is really quite great.”
Art Basel has little to do with local galleries(美术馆).Just 3 of the 260 galleries invited this year are from Miami, and only a handful of local artists are showing in the fair, which begins on Thursday.
But since Art Basel started 10 years ago, dozens of new galleries have opened, and scores of artists have moved here, attracted by the low rents and, partly,by Art Basel itself. The fair gives artists, collectors and gallery owners a rare chance to see world-class art but, more important,to learn from the leading players of the international art world.
The artist Christy Gast said she moved here in 2008 partly because the yearly art fair made the city seem like one of the rare places an artist could succeed in.“From the outside,Basel has created the idea that Miami is a city where being an artist is a right thing to do,”said Ms.Gast.The city, for its part, has used Art Basel to show the world that it is no cultural backwater(闭塞的地方).
Along with galleries and artists,Miami's stock of private art collectors has also risen in the last decade.

4.The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A.Miami has become an art city now

Just a little walk in the city of New York or Chicago, for example, would make any foreigner realize the presence of people of various races walking down the street: probably blacks,African Americans,Spanish,Asians, and so on.Or for another example,on school campuses in America, both the teachers and the students usually consist of people from a number of countries rather than only one.
Indeed, the variety of ethnicity (种族渊源) in America is often claimed to be the best mix in the world. That's why the famous term “melting pot” arises. Its basic idea presents the whole nation as one large pot.Anyone who enters the United States is automatically thrown into this “pot”.All the cultural aspects that one brings into are mixed together,or melted,to form a new culture.
In comparison with the “melting pot” theory, there is a “salad bowl” theory. This idea shows a completely separate view that newcomers bring different cultures, where each of these cultures is kept as an essential part to make up the whole.Every distinctive culture or belief is considered to be one of the tastes or ingredients (成分) that contribute to forming the whole. Therefore, its original shape and characteristics are maintained.
The ideas,of the “melting pot” and the “salad bowl”in America both show an ideal to many people and are often admired.Having a close look at the reality of the country, such as the existing ethnic segregation (分离),the fact of the white population fleeing from the minority, and the trend of the minority group forming their own group, one can see that the “melting pot” theory is merely a myth.Despite its long fame,it is more suitable to label America as a “salad bowl”.
5.What would be the BEST title for the passage?
A.America:“melting pot” or “salad bowl”?
B.Why many people come to America?
C.The development of American culture
D.The ways to adapt to American life
6.The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell us the fact that________.

A.are eager to change the new culture
B.can adapt to the new culture more easily
C.try to prove the importance of their culture
D.lose their own identities to form a new culture
8.We can learn from the last paragraph that different ethnic minorities in America________.

both“两者都”;either“(两者中的)任何一个”。
4.A wonderful books前面没有限定词,故a great many后不需介词of。
stretch out伸出;leave out省去;stand out引人注目。

take sb.in欺骗某人;take up从事,占用(时间、空间);take on雇用,显现;take off起飞,脱掉。
