Steven Spielberg's 2002 science-fiction thriller Minority Report produced a world where computers could read minds and predict the future. It seemed fanciful at the time, but fantasy is edging closer to fact.
On Jan. 31,a team of scientists at the UC Berkeley, led by Robert Knight programmed computers to decode(解码) brain waves and replay them as words.Five months earlier, another group of Berkeley scientists showed their colleagues short movies and used computers to play back in color what people saw.
These experiments are a big advance from 2006,when a French scientist first replayed images from a human mind,a black-and-white checkerboard pattern. The possibilities are great:a disabled person could “speak”;doctors could access the mind of a patient who fainted;you could re-watch your dreams on an iPad.There are,of course, equally dark side, such as the involuntary take out of information from the brain.
In spite of these breakthroughs,Jack Gallant, the neuroscientist who led the first Berkeley team, says current technology for decoding brain activity is still “relatively primitive”.The field is held back by its poor machinery,in particular the fMRI.
“Eventually, says Gallant, someone will invent a decoding machine you can wear as a hat.”Such an advance into the human mind, he says, might take 30 years.
Still, the recent advances at Berkeley offer small answers, which scientists can use to begin unlocking the secrets of memory and consciousness.

It is a sad fact of life that only one or two percent of invented items make money for their inventors. The author of this book believes this could be increased to ten percent if inventors were provided with and used the information available now.
Most inventors do not have the qualities needed for creating successful businesses.Thomas Edison is a classic example.Though a brilliant inventor,he often failed when he tried to commercialize(利用……牟利)his inventions.
A frequent mistake is that they didn't do basic market research at an early stage. They have spent much money on patenting and tooling, only to learn that the idea has already been patented!Without giving away details of his invention,an inventor can make a simple check using local library directories. A simple computer check may show incredible sources of information related to his item.
As children we were told that Emerson had said,“If you build a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door.”So many inventors think that they can sit back and wait for customers to arrive. He who thinks,in this day and age, that a product will sell itself is out of touch with the real world.
Inventors often fail to realize that manufacturing costs are often only a small percent of the retail price(零售价).
The author also devotes an entire chapter to “Ten Ways to Invention Suicide”.This chapter analyzes ten common ways in which inventors end their inventions' future. He talks about the “paranoid inventor” who cannot bring himself to trust anyone,“the omnipotent inventor” who thinks that without any resources he can take on an entire industry, and the “greedy inventor” who wants it all for himself.
The book concludes that if the inventor thinks that there is some magic formula for the commercialization of his invention, his invention will probably end up among the 98 percent that fail. However,if the inventor makes an honest effort to understand the process of new product development,he can succeed.
36.What are Paragraphs 2-5 mainly about?
A.Tips on how to become an inventor.
B.The qualities of a good inventor.
C.The similarities between inventors all around the world.
D.Reasons why inventors fail to make money from their inventions.
37.What mistakes do inventors often make?

(2013·山东高考)You can't always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That's why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia.“Once,I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain.I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.
The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand.Sensors (传感器) then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there's also a 360° motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed,so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians.Besides,it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people.Being installed (安装) at 2 metres off the ground,it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production,Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
41.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?
A.To predict a heavy rain.
B.To check the weather forecast.
C.To protect people from the rain.
D.To remind people to take an umbrella.
42.What do we know from Belyaev's words in Paragraph 2?
A.His creation was inspired by an experience.
B.It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C.Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D.He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
43.Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?
A.motor→canopy→sensors
B.sensors→motor→canopy
C.motor→sensors→canopy
D.canopy→motor→sensors
44.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the Lampbrella?
A.Its moving speed. B.Its appearance.
C.Its installation. D.Its safety.
45.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.
B.The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.

46.An ant went to the bank of a river to quench its thirst, and being carried away by the rush of the stream, was on the point of drowning.A dove sitting on a tree overhanging the water plucked a leaf and let it fall into the stream close to her.The ant climbed onto it and floated in safety to the bank.Shortly afterwards a birdcatcher came and stood under the tree, aiming at the dove. The ant, perceiving his design, stung him in the foot.In pain the birdcatcher shouted, and noise made the dove take wing.
47.Two men were travelling together, when a bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and hid himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over,he held his breath, and pretended to be dead as much as he could. The bear soon left him,for he will not touch a dead body. When he disappeared, the other traveler descended from the tree, and asked his friend what it was the bear had whispered in his ear.“ He gave me this advice,” his companion replied,“Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger.”
48.A prince had some monkeys trained to dance.Being naturally good at learning, they showed themselves excellent pupils, and in their rich clothes and masks, they danced as well as any of the courtiers.Their performance was often repeated with great applause, till on one occasion a courtier, bent on mischief, took from his pocket a handful of nuts and threw them upon the stage. The monkeys at the sight of the nuts forgot their dancing and became (as indeed they were) monkeys instead of actors.Pulling off their masks and tearing their robes, they fought with one another for the nuts. The dancing spectacle thus came to an end in the laughter and ridicule of the audience.
49.A cock was once strutting up and down the farmyard among the hens when suddenly he noticed something shining in the straw.“ Ho!Ho!” said he,“ that's for me,” and soon rooted it out from beneath the straw. It turned out to be a pearl that by some chance had been lost in the yard.“ You may be a treasure,” signed the cock,“ to man,but for me I would rather have a single barley-corn.”
50.An old man on the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He ordered his servants to bring in a bunch of sticks, and said to his eldest son,“Break it.”The son tried hard, but with all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful.“ Untie it,” said the father,“and each of you take a stick.”When they had done so,he called out to them,“ Now,break,” and each stick was easily broken.

He talks about the“paranoid inventor”who cannot bring himself to trust anyone可知答案。
However,if the inventor makes an honest effort to understand the process of new product development,he can succeed.
The author of this book... The author also devotes an entire chapter to...
根据第三段中的最后一句Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand.
根据第五段中的关键信息so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians,to protect from possible lightning strike和it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians可知第五段主要描述了这种伞的安全性,故选项D为正确答案。
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production...

Yesterday I did a survey on how the cellphone is used among 2,400 students of our school.According to the result,95% of the students have cellphones,65% of whom spend around 40 yuan and 35% of whom spend 60 yuan each month. The money is used to telephone, send messages and surf the Internet. When asked why they surf the Internet, they say that they search for information, see films, play games and chat with friends.Personally,I think students should be allowed to bring cellphones to school, but they should focus more on their study rather than on entertainment.

Today I'll be talking about the invention of the camera and photography. The camera is often thought to be a modern invention, but as early as 1727,a German physicist discovered that light darkens silver salt.Used as a camera,a big box was set up,and a small hole was cut in one side to let the light in;he made temporary pictures on the salt.Silver salt is still the base of the photographic film today. Then a French scientist made the first permanent picture by using a special piece of metal which was covered with silver salt.A photograph he made in 1862 still exists.
The painter De Gear improved the process by covering the metal also with placing the common salt which we can eat. That was in 1839,the official date of beginning of photographs. But the problem was the printing of the photographs. And it wasn't until other scientists developed the kind of photographic paper we now use that good prints were possible and photography became truly modern. In the 1870's,Matthew Bradey was able to take his famous pictures in American Civil War.In the 20's of this century,Georges Mann of the United States simplified film developing, and Dr.Edward Lane invented the so-called “Instant Camera”,which uses self-developing film.If we say photography came into existence in 1839,it follows that it took more than 100 years for the camera to reach its present condition of technical refinement(密度).

The name of Alexander Graham Bell strikes a “bell” as the inventor of the telephone. What most people do not know, however,is that this great scientist, engineer, inventor, and innovator was amongst the first advocates of renewable energy as a solution to the decreasing coal and oil resources. After his research in acoustics(声学) that led to the invention of the telephone in 1876,Alexander Graham Bell started to take a keen interest in the greenhouse effect.
The history of renewable energy started long before Alexander Graham Bell's time. Camphene (莰烯),the most popular lamp fuel of the 1850s, sold for 50 cents a gallon.Alcohol-powered irons, coffee roasters, hot water heaters and stoves, and even alcohol-fueled cars were common in those days.
The discovery of “rock oil” soon changed the scene. The lower costs of kerosene(煤油),the tax benefits of kerosene, taxed at 10 cents a gallon as opposed to D|S 2 per gallon of camphene, and the marketing and expansion efforts of oil companies soon made gasoline and kerosene cheaper and easily available.
Alexander Graham Bell was amongst the first to understand that increasing use of fossil fuels would harm the environment and that the day was not far away when the sources of such non-renewable forms of energy would dry up.He introduced the term “greenhouse effect” to explain the phenomenon of the world becoming warmer due to the burning of fossil fuels.
By 1914,Alexander Graham Bell started exploring various renewable energy sources as possible alternative fuel options. He considered the available alternatives of waterpower, wood, and direct use of the sun's rays, but soon identified alcohol as the best substitute for fossil fuels able to meet the demands of the future.
In his article in the National Geographic Magazine,Volume 31 of February 1917,Alexander Graham Bell suggested alcohol as a “clean, beautiful, and efficient fuel”.The big advantage of alcohol was clean burning without any harmful emissions and the possibility of a guaranteed continuous supply by the production of an annual supply of alcohol.

It has happened to almost everyone. You're sitting on a train or a bus, and someone right next to you is annoyingly shouting into his or her mobile phone.
But those days could soon be over due to “silent sounds”,a new technology shown at the CEBIT fair this week that transforms lip movements into a computer-generated voice for the listener at the other end of the phone.
The device, developed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology(KIT),uses electromyography(肌动电流描记术) to monitor the tiny muscle movements that occur when we speak and transform them into electrical pulses that can then be turned into speech, without a sound being uttered.
“We currently use electrodes(电极) glued to the skin.In the future, such electrodes might be included into cell phones,”says Michael Wand of the KIT.
The technology opens up a large number of applications, from helping people who have lost their voices due to illness or accidents to telling a trusted friend your PIN number over the phone without anyone eavesdropping (偷听)-assuming no lip-readers are around.
The technology can also turn you into an instant polyglot.Because the electrical pulses are universal, they can be immediately transformed into the language of the user's choice.
“Native speakers can silently utter sentences in their own languages, and the receivers hear the sentences translated into their languages,”says Wand.
The translation technology works for languages like English,French and German, but for languages like Chinese, where different tones convey different meanings, may be a problem,he adds.
Noisy people in your office? Not any more.“We're also working on technology to be used in an office environment,”the KIT scientist told AFP.
The engineers have got the device working to 99 percent efficiency, which means the mechanical voice at the other end of the phone gets only one word in 100 wrong, explains Wand.
“We're working to overcome the remaining technical difficulties. In five, maybe ten years, this will be useable, everyday technology,”he says.
6.According to the text, the new technology ________.
