(2013·梅县高二月考)Nick Goldsmith remembers the moment he decided to become a hospice(收容所)volunteer. His mother told him a story about a friend who worked at a hospice. One day,she was walking past a patient's door when the patient cried out to her.“But there was nothing wrong,he only wanted some companionship,”Goldsmith said.“He didn't want to be alone,so she sat with him. There's no reason I can't do that.”
Not only did he do it,but he started a student volunteer program at Dowling Catholic High School, where he's a senior,to ensure the work he started at Taylor House Hospice will continue after he graduates.Last month,Iowa Health Hospice honored Goldsmith,18,for his volunteer work with the organization by naming a D|S 500 annual scholarship for him, which will be open to any student who volunteers with Iowa Heath Hospice.
“That was by far the least we could do to recognize Nick,”Susie Flood said.“He hasn't just given his own time and energy, but he's encouraged others to do the same.”Goldsmith, who lives on Des Moines' west side, hadn't had any experience with hospice before walking into the door of Taylor House for the first time.He chose it because his mother's friend-the one whose story had made him volunteer-works there.
“They're really excited about my being there and there's a real need for teen volunteers,”Goldsmith said.“The principal at Dowling approved of my being able to offer service hours to anyone who would like to be a volunteer.”Students must earn a certain number of service hours to graduate, from Dowling.
When Goldsmith leaves Des Moines next fall to attend college,he'll give up leading the hospice service-learning program.“I want us,Dowling students,to keep making a difference,”he said.“It's easy to talk about things you can do to help people, but what many teenagers don't realize is how good it can make you feel inside.”

Considered the brightest talent in a generation,Norway's Carlsen will become the world's youngest ever top ranked player when new rankings come out.
Named the “Mozart of chess”,Carlsen has other interests that he believes help his game.He paid no attention to comparisons with the world's troubled chess geniuses such as Bobby Fisher.“Fisher was one of the greatest chess players of all time,”Carlsen said.“The difference between us is that he was attracted to chess in an unhealthy way and that's a line I don't want to cross.I try not to mix chess with life. When I don't play,I'll do normal things for a teenager.”
Carlsen started playing chess at 8 mainly to beat his elder sister.Within a year he often beat his father and at 13 he had a shock win in a speed chess competition against world champion Kasparov. But the early success spoiled Carlsen, who at one point even had a reputation for being a little lazy in training. That changed sometime last year when Carlsen realized he could become the best in the world. He asked Kasparov to teach him during his competitions around the world and Kasparov agreed.
Carlsen says that he owes much to Kasparov, who provides details about the weaker sides of his leading opponents(对手) for him, many of whom he has played against.Carlsen completes his preparations with computer analyses of his opponents' matches but says that since the 1997 victory of the Deep Blue chess program against then world champion Kasparov, playing against a computer doesn't make much sense.Carlsen said,“Playing against the computer regularly would mean that I would lose more often than I would win and I don't think that would be very helpful for my confidence.”
31.What's the difference between Carlsen and Bobby Fisher?

A.prefers to play against computers than real people
B.shows his respect and thanks for Kasparov
C.gains more confidence when playing against computers
D.knows his opponents' weaker sides clearly all by himself
35.What would be the BEST title for this passage?

Long before man lived on the Earth, there were fishes, reptiles, birds, insects, and some mammals.Although some of these animals were ancestors of kinds living today, others are now extinct, that is,they have no descendants alive now.
Nevertheless,we know a great deal about many of them because their bones and shells have been preserved in the rocks as fossils. From them we can tell their size and shape, how they walked, and the kind of food they ate.Very occasionally the rocks show impression of skin,so that apart from color,we can build up a reasonably accurate picture of an animal that died millions of years ago. That kind of rock in which the remains are found tells us much about the nature of the original land, often of the plants that grew on it,and even of its climate.
When an animal dies, the body, its bones,or shell, may often be carried away by streams into lakes or the sea and there get covered up by mud.If the animal lived in the sea,its body would probably sink and be covered with mud.More and more mud would fall upon it until the bones or shell become embedded and preserved.Nearly all of the fossils that we know were preserved in rocks formed by water action, and most of these are of animals that lived in or near water. Thus it follows that there must be many kinds of mammals, birds, and insects of which we know nothing.
The first animals with true backbones were the fishes, first known in the rocks of 375 million years ago.About 300 million years ago,the amphibians, the animals, able to live both on land and in water, appeared. They were giant, sometimes 8 feet long, and many of them lived in the swampy pools in which our coal seam,or layer,is formed. The amphibians gave rise to the reptiles and for nearly 150 million years, these were the principal forms of life on land,in the sea,and in the air.About 75 million years ago,the Age of Reptiles was over and most of the groups died out.The mammals quickly developed, and we can trace the evolution of many familiar animals such as the elephant and horse. Many of the later mammals, though now extinct, were known to primitive man and were featured by him in cave paintings and on bone carvings.
36.What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word“descendants” in Paragraph 1?
A.Relatives. B.Parents.
C.Offspring. D.Ancestors.
37.The fossils in the rocks can tell us the following EXCEPT________.
A.the water action of the time
B.the way the creature walked
C.the size and shape of the creature
D.the food the creature ate
38.Why are many kinds of creatures in the old age unknown to us?
A.Because all of them lived in or near water.
B.Because most of them died out too quickly.
C.Because many of them lived far away from water.
D.Because many have evolved into other different creatures.
39.What is the correct evolutionary order of the animals in the world?
A.Fish,reptile,amphibians,mammals,primitive man.
B.Fish,amphibians,reptile,mammals,primitive man.
C.Reptile,fish,amphibians,mammals,primitive man.
D.Mammals,fish,reptile,amphibians,primitive man.
40.Which of the following is WRONG?
A.From the fossils we can know many things besides the climate.
B.The rocks that the fossils were preserved in were usually formed by water action.
C.About 150 million years ago,the reptiles became the major forms of life on the earth.
D.Fossils often show us the impression of some animals' skin.

“Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(特点)in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confident American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and a foreign instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What's worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.
Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually do not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their speeches (The course I'm teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won't be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.
41.To compete with American students it's very important to________.
A.be quite confident
B.be polite and friendly
C.have more discussions with them
D.understand what they think about

A.gives a silly or simple answer
B.tries to seize any chance to speak in class
C.shows no interest in the course
D.is considered to have no opinion of his own
43.The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if ________.
A.he asks a student to repeat what he has said
B.the students bargain with him
C.he pretends to know what he doesn't
D.he has to give a speech
44.We learn from the second paragraph that________.
A.we should also remain modest in America
B.modesty doesn't help you much in America
C.Americans also like modest people
D.modesty can help you get through an American graduate program

Have you been asked for money by some beggars who have disabilities while you're enjoying shopping?Do you have any pity for that kind of people or just feel afraid? For whatever reasons, the number of disabled beggars bumming (乞讨) along the street has increased rapidly.
Why are there so many disabled people begging in the street? The reasons are so various that we don't need to understand. But at least, we know that they do not lead an easy life.So we should help them in some ways.
The treatment for disabled people should go like this:First, accept them.Don't be afraid of looking at the terrible shape of the disabled.Try to treat them equally.Because they are a part of the society,we can't abandon them. The second is to help them as much as we could. If you can be a volunteer and do some work for the disabled people, that would be very nice. That does good not only to disabled people but also to yourself, because you will feel good after your kind action.

4.B 从下文in order to see the great falls that lie out on the other side可推知,他们必须“跨过(cross)”这座吊桥。
16.noisily 17.our 18.or 19.As 20.between 21.an 22.answering 23.another 24.after 25.like
根据文章第一段的“There's no reason I can't do that”和第二段的“Not only did he do it,but he started a student volunteer program”可知,Nick被妈妈的故事所感动,自己也想成为一名收容所志愿者,他不但实现了愿望并且走得更远。
根据文章第二段的“...to ensure the work he started at Taylor House Hospice will continue after he graduates.”
根据文章第三段的“That was by far the least we could do to recognize Nick”可知,其目的就是认可Goldsmith所做的工作和贡献。
关于Susie Flood身份,从文章第二段的“...a D|S 500 annual scholarship for him, which will be open to any student who volunteers with Iowa Health Hospice”中这一奖学金的针对对象和第三段的“That was by far the least we could do to recognize Nick”说话者的语气可以判断出,Susie Flood应该是服务于Iowa Health Hospice,故答案选A。
根据文章最后一段,上了大学之后,Nick就要辞去在“hospice service-learning program”中所担任的职务,而根据“I want us,as Dowling students,to keep making a difference”可以推断,代替Nick职位的未来的领导者应该是该校的学生。
根据第二段的he was attracted... unhealthy way可知D正确。
根据第三段的who at one point...lazy in training可知D正确。
从descendants出现的语境来看,上文说others are now extinct(有的物种已经灭绝了),通过that is(也就是)我们可以推断出they have no descendants alive now与上文同义,所以此处应指“后代”。
根据第一段第三句“Living and competing with all these confident American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as...”

Though the passage doesn't uncover the reason for disabled beggars increasing,it points out how to treat the disabled-not only should we accept them, but help and show warmth to them, making the world much better.
It is well known to us that many disabled people are struggling to survive in our country. So not only should we hold a right attitude towards them, but also do them a favor practically. But how to help?
First,we must understand, accept and respect them.Don't avoid meeting them because of being afraid of their ugly, terrible outer appearance.Second,we can make their daily life much easier and more convenient by doing many small things.
In short,if all of us offer our love and show warmth to them heart and soul, they can also live as rich and full a life as we do.Our world is bound to become more beautiful and harmonious.
