(2013·天水高二月考)Nick Goldsmith remembers the moment he decided to become a hospice(收容所)volunteer. His mother told him a story about a friend who worked at a hospice. One day,she was walking past a patient's door when the patient cried out to her.“But there was nothing wrong,he only wanted some companionship,”Goldsmith said.“He didn't want to be alone,so she sat with him. There's no reason I can't do that.”
Not only did he do it,but he started a student volunteer program at Dowling Catholic High School, where he's a senior,to ensure the work he started at Taylor House Hospice will continue after he graduates.Last month,Iowa Health Hospice honored Goldsmith,18,for his volunteer work with the organization by naming a D|S 500 annual scholarship for him, which will be open to any student who volunteers with Iowa Heath Hospice.
“That was by far the least we could do to recognize Nick,”Susie Flood said.“He hasn't just given his own time and energy, but he's encouraged others to do the same.”Goldsmith, who lives on Des Moines' west side, hadn't had any experience with hospice before walking into the door of Taylor House for the first time.He chose it because his mother's friend-the one whose story had made him volunteer-works there.
“They're really excited about my being there and there's a real need for teen volunteers,”Goldsmith said.“The principal at Dowling approved of my being able to offer service hours to anyone who would like to be a volunteer.”Students must earn a certain number of service hours to graduate, from Dowling.
When Goldsmith leaves Des Moines next fall to attend college,he'll give up leading the hospice service-learning program.“I want us,Dowling students,to keep making a difference,”he said.“It's easy to talk about things you can do to help people, but what many teenagers don't realize is how good it can make you feel inside.”

Considered the brightest talent in a generation,Norway's Carlsen will become the world's youngest ever top ranked player when new rankings come out.
Named the “Mozart of chess”,Carlsen has other interests that he believes help his game.He paid no attention to comparisons with the world's troubled chess geniuses such as Bobby Fisher.“Fisher was one of the greatest chess players of all time,”Carlsen said.“The difference between us is that he was attracted to chess in an unhealthy way and that's a line I don't want to cross.I try not to mix chess with life. When I don't play,I'll do normal things for a teenager.”
Carlsen started playing chess at 8 mainly to beat his elder sister.Within a year he often beat his father and at 13 he had a shock win in a speed chess competition against world champion Kasparov. But the early success spoiled Carlsen, who at one point even had a reputation for being a little lazy in training. That changed sometime last year when Carlsen realized he could become the best in the world. He asked Kasparov to teach him during his competitions around the world and Kasparov agreed.
Carlsen says that he owes much to Kasparov, who provides details about the weaker sides of his leading opponents(对手) for him, many of whom he has played against.Carlsen completes his preparations with computer analyses of his opponents' matches but says that since the 1997 victory of the Deep Blue chess program against then world champion Kasparov, playing against a computer doesn't make much sense.Carlsen said,“Playing against the computer regularly would mean that I would lose more often than I would win and I don't think that would be very helpful for my confidence.”
40.What's the difference between Carlsen and Bobby Fisher?
A.Carlsen always mixes life with chess.
B.Fisher had many hobbies besides playing chess.

A.prefers to play against computers than real people
B.shows his respect and thanks for Kasparov
C.gains more confidence when playing against computers
D.knows his opponents' weaker sides clearly all by himself
43.What would be the BEST title for this passage?
A.Norwegian teenager to be the new chess king
B.Kasparov improves Carlsen's chess skills quickly
C.Don't mix your life with chess
D.Where there is a will,there is a way

Long before man lived on the Earth, there were fishes, reptiles, birds, insects, and some mammals.Although some of these animals were ancestors of kinds living today, others are now extinct, that is,they have no descendants alive now.
Nevertheless,we know a great deal about many of them because their bones and shells have been preserved in the rocks as fossils. From them we can tell their size and shape, how they walked, and the kind of food they ate.Very occasionally the rocks show impression of skin,so that apart from color,we can build up a reasonably accurate picture of an animal that died millions of years ago. That kind of rock in which the remains are found tells us much about the nature of the original land, often of the plants that grew on it,and even of its climate.
When an animal dies, the body, its bones,or shell, may often be carried away by streams into lakes or the sea and there get covered up by mud.If the animal lived in the sea,its body would probably sink and be covered with mud.More and more mud would fall upon it until the bones or shell become embedded and preserved.Nearly all of the fossils that we know were preserved in rocks formed by water action, and most of these are of animals that lived in or near water. Thus it follows that there must be many kinds of mammals, birds, and insects of which we know nothing.
The first animals with true backbones were the fishes, first known in the rocks of 375 million years ago.About 300 million years ago,the amphibians, the animals, able to live both on land and in water, appeared. They were giant, sometimes 8 feet long, and many of them lived in the swampy pools in which our coal seam,or layer,is formed. The amphibians gave rise to the reptiles and for nearly 150 million years, these were the principal forms of life on land,in the sea,and in the air.About 75 million years ago,the Age of Reptiles was over and most of the groups died out.The mammals quickly developed, and we can trace the evolution of many familiar animals such as the elephant and horse. Many of the later mammals, though now extinct, were known to primitive man and were featured by him in cave paintings and on bone carvings.
44.What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word“descendants” in Paragraph 1?
A.Relatives. B.Parents.
C.Offspring. D.Ancestors.
45.The fossils in the rocks can tell us the following EXCEPT________.
A.the water action of the time
B.the way the creature walked
C.the size and shape of the creature
D.the food the creature ate
46.Why are many kinds of creatures in the old age unknown to us?
A.Because all of them lived in or near water.
B.Because most of them died out too quickly.
C.Because many of them lived far away from water.
D.Because many have evolved into other different creatures.
47.What is the correct evolutionary order of the animals in the world?
A.Fish,reptile,amphibians,mammals,primitive man.
B.Fish,amphibians,reptile,mammals,primitive man.
C.Reptile,fish,amphibians,mammals,primitive man.
D.Mammals,fish,reptile,amphibians,primitive man.

“Confidence” is probably one of the most noticeable traits(特点)in the Americans. They show confidence in the way they talk, the way they smile, the way they dress and the way they walk.Living and competing with all these confident American students,I find it extremely important to be confident as an international student and a foreign instructor. As a student, being confident means you should never hesitate to raise your hand whenever a question or a point comes to your mind.Don't mind if it sounds simple or silly.Otherwise you will never get a chance to speak in class at all. What's worse, the professors may think you are not prepared for the discussion or you do not have your own opinion on the issue—this is the last comment any graduate would like to receive.
Being confident for me as a foreign instructor means calmly asking the student to repeat what he or she has said if I did not get it.Pretending to understand what you actually do not may just bring yourself embarrassment or even disgrace. But the time I most need to be confident is when my students come to my office and bargain about the grades I have given for their speeches (The course I'm teaching here is Public Speaking).Modesty is a trait highly valued in China, but it won't be of much help here if you want to survive and succeed in a good American graduate program.
48.A professor will have the worst opinion of a student who________.
A.gives a silly or simple answer
B.tries to seize any chance to speak in class
C.shows no interest in the course
D.is considered to have no opinion of his own
49.The author is most likely to feel embarrassed if ________.
A.he asks a student to repeat what he has said
B.the students bargain with him
C.he pretends to know what he doesn't
D.he has to give a speech
50.We learn from the second paragraph that________.
A.we should also remain modest in America
B.modesty doesn't help you much in America
C.Americans also like modest people
D.modesty can help you get through an American graduate program
51.The passage is mainly developed by________.
A.providing examples
B.making comparisons
C.giving different figures
D.telling personal experiences

(2013·湖北高考)The technology is great. Without it we wouldn't have been able to put a man on the moon, explore the ocean's depths or eat microwave sausages. Computers have revolutionized our lives and they have the power to educate and pass on knowledge. But sometimes this power can create more problems than it solves.
Every doctor has had to try their best to calm down patients who've come into their surgery waving an Internet print-out, convinced that they have some rare incurable disease, say, throat cancer. The truth is usually far more ordinary, though: they don't have throat cancer, and it's just that their throats are swollen. Being a graduate of the Internet “school” of medicine does not guarantee accurate self-health-checks.
One day Mrs. Almond came to my hospital after feeling faint at work. While I took her blood sample and tried to find out what was wrong, she said calmly, “I know what's wrong; I've got throat cancer. I know there's nothing you doctors can do about it and I've just got to wait until the day comes.”
As a matter of routine I ordered a chest X-ray.I looked at it and the blood results an hour later.Something wasn't right.“Did your local doctor do an X-ray?”I asked. “Oh, I haven't been to the doctor for years,” she replied. “I read about it on a website and the symptoms fitted, so I knew that's what I had.”
However, some of her symptoms, like the severe cough and weight loss, didn't fit with it—but she'd just ignored this.
I looked at the X-ray again, and more tests confirmed it wasn't the cancer but tuberculosis(肺结核)—something that most certainly did need treating, and could be deadly. She was lucky we caught it when we did.
Mrs. Almond went pale when I explained she would have to be on treatment for the next six months to ensure that she was fully recovered. It was certainly a lesson for her. “I'm_so_embarrassed,”she said, shaking her head, as I explained that all the people she had come into close contact with would have to be found out and tested. She listed up to about 20,and then I went to my office to type up my notes. Unexpectedly, the computer was not working, so I had to wait until someone from the IT department came to fix it. Typical. Maybe I should have a microwave sausage while I waited?
52.Mrs. Almond talked about her illness calmly because________.
A.she thought she knew it well
B.she had purchased medicine online
C.she graduated from a medical school
D.she had been treated by local doctors
53.It was lucky for Mrs. Almond________.
A.to have contacted many friends
B.to have recovered in a short time
C.to have her assumption confirmed
D.to have her disease identified in time
54.Mrs. Almond said “I'm so embarrassed” (Para. 7) because________.
A.she had distrusted her close friends
B.she had caused unnecessary trouble
C.she had to refuse the doctor's advice
D.she had to tell the truth to the doctor
55.By mentioning the breakdown of the computer, the author probably wants to prove________.
A.it's a must to take a break at work
B.it's vital to believe in IT professionals
C.it's unwise to simply rely on technology
D.it's a danger to work long hours on computers
Celebrating sleep
World Sleep Day,observed on 21 March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems worldwide.Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common.
In 2002,scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China,Belgium and South Africa.Of the people that responded to the survey,24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses,31.6 percent were diagnosed (诊断)with insomnia(失眠)and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia. In addition,30.7 percent of survey respondents reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.
Overall, the survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also interfere with sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The survey's findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating. If this happens for a long time, the risk of putting on weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep.First, you should have regular sleep habits.Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day.You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you.At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine, such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks,as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night's sleep is important for everyone.By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

get through“接通电话”;get along“相处,进展”;get on“上车”;get to“到达”,均不合句意。
3.D as regards sb./sth.“关于或至于某人或某事物”;in/with regard to sb./sth.“关于某人或某事物,在这点或那点上”;regarding prep.“关于,至于”;regardless of意为“不管,不顾”
sensitive“敏感的”;negative“否定的”;alternative“替代的,供选择的”。
7.D substitute“代替物,代替品”;patience“耐心”;reference“提到,谈及”;alternative“可能的选择”。have no alternative but to do sth.=have no choice but to do sth.
10.A 句意:Harry(现在)感觉不舒服。
concentrate on关注,集中精力于……;look out for当心;appeal to呼吁,有吸引力。
20.B 从下文in order to see the great falls that lie out on the other side可推知,他们必须“跨过(cross)”这座吊桥。
31.A “毕竟(after all)”,生活还是美好的。
根据文章第一段的“There's no reason I can't do that”和第二段的“Not only did he do it,but he started a student volunteer program”可知,Nick被妈妈的故事所感动,自己也想成为一名收容所志愿者,他不但实现了愿望并且走得更远。
根据文章第二段的“...to ensure the work he started at Taylor House Hospice will continue after he graduates.”
根据文章第三段的“That was by far the least we could do to recognize Nick”可知,其目的就是认可Goldsmith所做的工作和贡献。
根据文章最后一段,上了大学之后,Nick就要辞去在“hospice service-learning program”中所担任的职务,而根据“I want us,as Dowling students,to keep making a difference”可以推断,代替Nick职位的未来的领导者应该是该校的学生。
根据第二段的he was attracted... unhealthy way可知D正确。
从descendants出现的语境来看,上文说others are now extinct(有的物种已经灭绝了),通过that is(也就是)我们可以推断出they have no descendants alive now与上文同义,所以此处应指“后代”。

As_we_all_know,computers_are_playing_a_very_important_role _in_our_life_ nowadays. If there were no computers, our life would become quite inconvenient.Firstly,we can't communicate with our friends or family fast and conveniently by sending e-mails or chatting online.Secondly,we wouldn't learn what are happening at home and abroad in the quickest way through the Internet.Thirdly, when we feel tired or bored in daily life,we couldn't download the music, movies or plays and relax ourselves by enjoying them.It would be a terrible thing, especially for those who have been accustomed to the life with a computer.Last but not least, without a computer,it would be much more difficult for scientists to work out some advanced problems, which will no doubt hold back the development of science and technology.
In conclusion,so significant are computers to us that we can't live well without them.
