Christopher Paolini, born in 1983 in Southern California,is the author of the Inheritance Cycle book series, which consists of the books Eragon,Eldest,Brisingr, and Inheritance.
Christopher Paolini lives in Paradise Valley,Montana, where he wrote the first book Eragon.Homeschooled by his parents,Paolini graduated from high school at the age of 15,but felt he was not yet mature enough for college,so in his spare time he wrote Eragon. After writing the first draft for a year,he spent a second year rewriting it,and then presented it to his parents. They saw the book's potential and published it in 2001 through their home-based publishing company,Paolini International.
Paolini and his family toured across the US to promote the book.Over 135 talks were given at bookshops, libraries, and schools, but the book did not receive much attention.Paolini said,“I would stand behind a table talking all day without a break—and would sell maybe forty books in eight hours if I did really well...It was a very stressful experience.I couldn't have gone on for very much longer.”
In the summer of 2002,American novelist Carl Hiaasen was on vacation in one of the cities that Paolini gave a talk in.While there, his stepson bought a copy of Eragon that he “immediately loved”.He showed it to his stepfather, who brought the book to the attention of the publishing house Alfred A.Knopf.Michelle Frey, executive editor at Knopf, contacted Paolini and his family to ask if they were interested in having Knopf publish Eragon. The answer was yes,and Knopf republished Eragon in August 2003, which was followed by Eldest in 2005, Brisingr in 2008, and Inheritance in 2011.

It is important to diagnose (诊断) cancer as early as possible. Some kinds of cancer, however, are especially hard to spot, including cancer of the head and neck. This is why a study published in The Journal of Cancer Research seems to hold good news for cancer diagnosis. The study shows that a tool called Nano Artificial Nose (or shortened to Na-Nose) is able to detect the breath of patients with the head and neck cancer. In other words,Na-Nose can “smell” the head and neck cancer.
Israeli researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology collected breath samples from volunteers: 22 with various head and neck cancers, 24 with lung cancer, and 36 healthy and cancer-free.The technology of Na-Nose is based on its ability to detect different chemical compounds (混合物) in the breath. The tool is so sensitive that it can tell the difference between people with and without cancer,as well as detecting which patients have the head and neck cancer.
The significance of this study is the possibility of detecting these hard-to-diagnose cancers at an earlier stage, leading to quicker treatment.Lead researcher Professor Hossam Haick said, “There's a desperate need to develop new ways to detect the head and neck cancer because diagnosis of the disease is complicated, requiring specialist examinations. We've shown that a simple breath test can spot the patterns of molecules (分子)which are found in head and neck cancer patients in a small, early study.”
The Journal of Cancer Research, which published the study,is owned by Cancer Research UK.The charity's head of cancer information, Dr.Lesley Walker, said,“It's important to be clear that this is a small study,at a very early stage,so many more years of research with patients will be needed to see if a breath test could be used in the clinic.”
40.The main fun_ction of Na-Nose is to________.
A.treat various kinds of cancer
B.collect the breath of patients
C.check whether people are healthy
D.help spot the head and neck cancer
41.From what Hossam Haick said we know________.
A.Na-Nose is convenient to use
B.the breath test is not always effective
C.the head and neck cancer is a rare disease
D.cancer researchers are making slow progress
42.Lesley Walker seems to think that________.
A.Na-Nose will play a great part in people's lives
B.the new technology will soon be used in the clinic
C.more study about Na-Nose should be conducted
D.the head and neck cancer can be cured in the near future
43.The main purpose of the text is to________.
A.report an important development in cancer research
B.explain why cancer patients'breath is different
C.show the features of the head and neck cancer
D.introduce a new way of treating cancer

Let's be honest:If you like to take lots of vacation, the United States is not the place to work.Besides a handful of national holidays, the typical American worker gets two or three precious weeks off out of a whole year to relax and see the world—much less than what people in many other countries receive.Only 57% of the US workers use up all of the days they're entitled (授权) to,compared with 89% of workers in France, a recent research found.
So what's going on here?A big reason for the difference is that paid time off is supported by law in many parts of the world.Germany is among more than two dozen industrialized countries—from Australia to Slovenia to Japan—that require employers to offer four weeks or more of paid vacation to their workers, according to a 2009 study by the human resources consulting company Mercer.Finland, Brazil and France are the champions, guaranteeing six weeks of time off.
But employers in the United States have no duty under federal law to offer any paid vacation, so about a quarter of all American workers don't have access to it,government figures show. That makes the US the only advanced nation in the world that doesn't guarantee its workers annual leave, according to a report titled “No-Vacation Nation” by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, a liberal policy group.
But the fear of layoffs(下岗) and the ever-faster pace of work mean many Americans don't want to be absent from the office—anxious that they might look like they're not willing to work hard.Or they worry they won't be able to deal with the backlog (积压未办之事)of work waiting for them after a vacation.
Working more makes Americans happier than Europeans, according to a study published recently in the Journal of Happiness Studies. That may be because Americans believe more than Europeans do that hard work is associated with success, wrote Adam Okulicz-Kozaryn,the study's author and an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Dallas.“Americans increase their happiness by working, and Europeans increase their happiness through vacation,” he found.
44.Which of the following countries has the longest paid vacation?
A.America. B.Germany.
C.Australia. D.France.
45.What does the underlined word “it”in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Federal law. B.Paid vacation.
C.Annual leave. D.Long vacation.
46.What is the text mainly about?
A.Why American workers have fewer vacations.
B.The reasons why American workers dislike work.
C.How workers in different countries take vacations.
D.Why American workers are happier than Europeans.

In the last two years, we've watched kids on reality TV working like dogs for 14 hours per day, getting yelled at by bad-tempered caretakers and receiving toilet training in front of a national audience.
All bad enough. But it wasn't until people saw the bad situations of Falcon Heene, the child who has sadly come to be known as Balloon Boy,that they really paid attention. He was sick on the Today Show, which made the entire nation feel sick as well.Millions of us stayed glued to our TVs on October 15, praying and watching the live drama as helicopters and jets flew over Colorado tracking a silver balloon which was thought to be holding 6-year-old Falcon. But in the end we found out that the child had been hiding in the attic(阁楼) of his house. The whole thing was a trick played by Falcon's parents who hoped to get their own reality TV show.
“This affair made all of us feel sick,” said reporter Jere Hester on www.nbcmiami.com.The national reaction against Falcon's parents has encouraged activists to push for ethical (伦理的) treatment of kids on reality TV.
“Now everybody gets it! We cannot keep doing this to kids,”said Paul Petersen,a kid star on The Donna Reed Show and now an advocate for kids on TV.His organization, A Minor Consideration, has been trying for years to put an end to the action of making use of children on television.
“Children are treated like slaves,” said Petersen,“They don't have freedom.” That's absolutely true, says Dr.Drew Pinsky, host of VHI's Celebrity Rehab. And Petersen says the effects are long-term.“The images of these kids on the potty (便壶)and being angry will open them up to unkind laughter or remarks as they get older.”
Protecting children from being made use of by TV shows may finally be an issue for lawmakers.Petersen says no reality shows are filmed in California because the state's child labor laws are the strictest in the country. He would like to see a similar federal law to protect kids.
47.Falcon Heene's story told in Paragraph 2 is mainly to________.
A.tell us that kids nowadays lack courage
B.explain why kids take part in reality TV shows
C.prove that reality TV shows are usually not true
D.show that kids on reality TV shows are badly treated
48.After watching Falcon Heene's show, activists realized that they must________.
A.encourage kids to say no to their parents
B.ask TV producers to be honest with the public
C.try to prevent kids from being hurt by TV shows
D.help the public know the challenges facing TV stations
49.Paul Petersen would agree that kids on TV shows________.
A.may suffer in the future
B.are usually very popular at school
C.can easily lose their temper in the future
D.are likely to be admired by people around them
50.In the author's opinion, reality TV shows involving kids are________.
A.boring B.exciting
C.reasonable D.unacceptable

Dear_Tom,
It's_reported_that_the_7_billionth_baby_was_born_on_October_31st,2011.However,I'm not happy about the news. The problem is there are too many people on the planet and the overcrowding is threatening to become a disaster we can't control.People are suffering from various problems such as lack of resources, poverty, starvation and so on.The size of the human population is a danger not only to humans but also to the environment as more people mean more pollution.
We need to act now before it is too late.First, all the countries should cooperate and take effective measures to prevent the population from growing excessively. For example, people need to be sensible about the size of their families.Second, people need to take care of the planet and stop taking it for granted. After all,we have only one earth.

Peter Jones is a 92-year-old, short, calm and proud man.Every morning he is fully dressed by eight o'clock, with his hair fashionably combed and face perfectly shaved; even though he is unable to see.He would move to a nursing home today. His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary.
After hours of waiting patiently in the entrance hall of the nursing home,he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he moved his walker skillfully to the elevator, the nurse provided a visual description of his tiny room.“I love it,” he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new pet dog.
“Mr.Jones, you haven't been to the room,” said the nurse.
“That doesn't have anything to do with it,” he replied.“Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.Whether I like my room or not doesn't depend on how the furniture is arranged ...it's how I arrange my mind.I have already decided to love it.It's a decision I make every morning when I wake up.I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed complaining of the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.Each day is a gift, and as long as I am alive, I'll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I've stored away.”
