Newspapers are not nearly as popular today as they were in the past. There are not many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people read only the sports pages, the advice or the gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. Most people don't take time to read the real news. They attempt to catch the readers' interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. The first page attracts attention and encourages the readers to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and a headline to make them stop and look.If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps they will not go on to read the front page anymore. They may read the headlines, but that is all, then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements.
It seems that people do not want the news from a newspaper anymore. They say they get the news on the television now.More people watch television news because it is easier and more interesting than reading a newspaper. What about you? Do you read news from a newspaper? Do you think it is easier to get the news from television? Or don't you care about news at all?Would you mind if there were no news?
36.According to the passage, newspapers are________.
A.more popular today
B.less popular today
C.as popular as before
D.getting more and more popular
37.We can know from the passage that the newspaper editors think the important part of the newspaper is________.
A.the front page
B.the sports page
C.the headlines
D.the classified advertisements
38.According to the passage, most people read all of the following except________.
A.the sports page B.comics
C.advertisements D.the real news
39.The author's attitude toward newspapers is________.

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk.Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me.”or“Excuse me.”
Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite.
For Americans, thumbs-up means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger (食指).Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.
40.From the first paragraph we can learn that________.
A.gestures don't mean anything while talking
B.gestures can help us to express ourselves

C.expresses his satisfaction to you
D.expresses his worries about you

The sun has been the inspiration for hundreds of songs, but now scientists have discovered that the star at the centre of our solar system produces its own music.Astronomers at the University of Sheffield have managed to record for the first time in the world the eerie musical harmonies produced by the magnetic field (磁场) in the outer atmosphere of the sun.
They found that huge coronal loops (日冕环) that have been observed spinning away from the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere vibrate (振动) like strings on a musical instrument.Using satellite pictures of these loops, which can be over 60,000 miles long, the scientists were able to recreate the sound by turning the visible vibrations into noises and speeding up the frequency so that people can hear them.
Professor Robertus von Fáy-Siebenbürgen said, “It was strangely beautiful and exciting to hear these noises for the first time from such a large and powerful source. It is providing us with a new way of learning about the sun and giving us a new insight into the physics about the sun's outer layers where temperatures reach millions of de grees.”
The coronal loops are thought to be involved in the production of solar flares that throw magnetic energy out into space, creating a phenomenon known as space weather. When the sun's activity, and thus solar flare production, increases, the resulting “space storm” can have severe results here on earth, destroying electronic equipment, overheating power networks and damaging satellites.Professor Fáy-Siebenbürgen said that studying the“music of the sun” would provide new ways of understanding and predicting solar flares before they happen.
Professor Fáy-Siebenbürgen's research has been shown as the University of Sheffield sets up a new project, called Project Sunshine, aimed at finding new ways to control the power of the sun.“These loops are vibrating like the strings on a guitar.Over time the waves die away and that is telling us new things about the physics in the sun's atmosphere,”he said.
44.The underlined word“eerie” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by“________”.
A.common B.worrying
C.mysterious D.familiar
45.As a matter of fact, the music of the sun________.

B.To further study why the sun produces its own music.
C.To find effective ways of preventing the harm caused by sun storms.
D.To learn more about how sun storms die away over time.

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born on December 10,1830 in the quiet community of Amherst, Massachusetts, the second daughter of Edward and Emily Norcross Dickinson.Emily, Austin (her elder brother) and her younger sister Lavinia were raised in a quiet, reserved family headed by their authoritative father Edward.Throughout Emily's life, her mother was not “emotionally accessible”, the absence of which might have caused some of Emily's strange behaviors.
The Dickinson family was famous in Amherst.Unlike her father, Emily did not enjoy the popularity and excitement of public life in Amherst, and she began to withdraw.Emily.did not fit in with her father's religion in Amherst, and her father began to monitor the books she read because of their potential to draw her away from the faith.
Emily had a good education and attended the Amherst Academy.Although Emily never married, she had several important relationships with a select few.In her early twenties, Emily began to write poetry seriously.Fortunately,Emily met two very influential men that would be sources of inspiration and guidance: Charles Wadsworth and Thomas Wentworth Higginson.Charles Wadsworth, aged 41, had a powerful effect on Emily's life and her poetry. On her trip to Philadelphia, Emily met Wadsworth, who was to become her “dearest earthly friend”.Wadsworth, like Dickinson, was a solitary (喜欢独处的), romantic person that Emily could trust in when writing her poetry. Most importantly,it is widely believed that Emily had a great love for Wadsworth even though he was married.
On April 15, 1862 she met Thomas Wentworth Higginson,a famous literary man and sent four poems to ask for his advice about publication.Although Higginson advised Dickinson against publishing her poetry, he did see the creative talent in her poetry. As a result, only seven of her poems were published in her lifetime. On May 15, 1886 Emily took her last breath at 56, leaving behind nearly 2,000 poems.

If we look at the things around us, we'll find how closely our everyday life is related to science. In one case, at home we can turn on the central heating or air conditioner when we feel cold or hot, and we can watch TV or listen to the tape recorder for entertainment, and we can use a gas stove to cook our meals, and we have computers to help us with our work when we are working in the office, and we also have cars, buses, even planes as traffic tools when we go out. All these things are the results of the scientific development. It goes without saying that without science our society cannot make rapid progress and our life cannot be comfortable and convenient.
Now that science is so significant in our daily life, we should try to make as many contributions as possible to the development of science. Ⅳ.
When I was 12 years old, I was at a very hard stage in life.I was short and fat, which was bad for a girl, so coordination (协调) was not one of my strongest features. On the other hand, my mother was a very talented softball player who even acted as my coach.Night after night, I would try my best to impress “my coach”.Unfortunately, I just felt like a terrible disappointment to my mother.
One summer afternoon, my mother told us we were going to visit Uncle David.Since we lived in an apartment, going to the country was quite a treat. My uncle David always had a way of making me feel special.
When we arrived, my uncle and cousin Jeff were throwing metal rings at two holes in the ground.I was curious about what they were doing so I went over to watch.Noticing that I was standing there, my uncle asked if I had ever played washers.
Being a “city girl”, my reply was that the only “washers” I knew were the ones that cleaned clothes. To my embarrassment, Uncle David chuckling(咯咯笑), explained that the metal rings were called washers.I was shocked to hear my uncle saying he wanted me to take his place. He then gave me the washers and gave tips on how to throw better.
Unwillingly, I joined Jeff.Gradually, I found myself not only enjoying but also wanting to win this game. The washer went into the air and began to fall. Then a cloud of dust appeared as the washer sank into the hole.My first try! I had actually thrown the washer into the hole!
Although twenty-three summers have gone by since that day, this small success in washer playing helped me get back self-confidence lost when I struggled with the game of softball.
1.Why did the author live a hard life at the age of twelve?
A.Because her body has many health problems.
B.Because coordination was her weakest feature.
C.Because she was forced to learn to play softball.
D.Because her efforts at softball were disappointing.
2.When she was told that she could visit Uncle David, the author felt________.
A.surprised B.pleased
C.disappointed D.nervous
3.It can NOT be learned from the passage that________.
A.the author must be more confident now
B.the author's mother was good at softball
C.the author had never met David before the visit
D.the author had never played washers before the visit
4.Which is the RIGHT time order of the changes in the author's feelings when she was at her uncle's?
A.Curious—Embarrassed—Shocked—Pleased
B.Shocked—Curious—Embarrassed—Pleased

Ⅰ.1.demand 2.depended 3.assist 4.accused
5.sceptical 6.dilemma 7.submit 8.guilty 9.deliberately 10.updated
concentrate on专心于,集中精力于……;be free of无……
由答语中的“I don't know.”
3.D warn意为“警告”,warn sb.of sth.
在四个选项中such that和so that不能接动词原形,排除C项和D项。词组so as to表示“为了……”,而such as to表示“到如此程度以至”。由句意可知such as to是最佳答案。
Because she was delighted at the good news.
6.B at last最后;in case以防;once again再次;in time及时。
demand“要求”,常用于demand to do结构,如果表示“要求某人做某事”,其构成是demand of sb.to do sth.;remind sb.to do“提醒某人做某事”,因此正确答案为B项。
9.C acquire a knowledge of“学会,精通……”,为固定短语。
be eager for 意为“渴望,急于”;be eager to do sth.
据语境选meanwhile,此处meanwhile=at the same time。
keep sb.informed of sth.“使某人随时了解某事”。
assist“帮助”;accuse“指责,控告”;attend“参加,照顾”。
not only...but(also)...
Ⅲ.1.D 由下句“She was even willing to work without pay.”
2.A 从空后的“that helped other businesses find jobs for old people”可以看出她提供的是商业服务。
3.B 从后面的“By talking with them”可以看出Anna Douglas每天都与很多老年人会面,而不是观察、安慰或回答他们。
7.D 从下文“She began to write a newspaper column called‘Sixty Plus’”可以知道:她为国家杂志写人物故事是以前的事。
8.A 联系上下文“Old people like herself”.
11.A 从空后的“see the truth behind a problem”可知,Anna Douglas用的是thinking ability。
13.B 由第二段第三句话“She began to write a newspaper column...”
联系上文“Say good things to them and about them”得此答案,不要总是指责别人。
19.D speak out的含义是“说出”;give up的含义是“放弃”;get back意为“取回”;stick to意为“坚持”。
根据第一段“Night after night,I would try my best to impress‘my coach’.Unfortunately, I just felt like a terrible disappointment to my mother.”
根据第二段“Since we lived in an apartment, going to the country was quite a treat.”
根据第二段“My uncle David always had a way of making me feel special.”
根据第三段“I was curious about what they were doing”,第四段“To my embarrassment, I was shocked to hear my uncle saying...”和第五段“I found myself not only enjoying but also wanting to win this game.”
根据全文以及最后一段“...this small success in washer playing helped me get back self-confidence lost when I struggled with the game of softball.”可知选B。
Ⅴ.1.They don't want to depend on their neighbors for help. 2.I left her a message so as to tell her about it.

If there is one thing I'm sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that many directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact, I'm pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspapers by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体).They actually feed_off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What it read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air.And as for the Internet,it's never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

One evening in early September it started raining volcanic stones in Sant'Alfio,a small town leading up to the craters of Mount Etna in Sicily,Italy. The town's people were badly frightened. But their main concern was not for their destroyed crops but for the town's greatest treasure,a chestnut tree believed to be more than 2,000 years old.Happily, the tree, which has survived many disasters and not only from the fires of Etna, remained unharmed this time too.
Known as“the Chestnut Tree of 100 Horses”, the tree acquired its name from a tale in which a queen found shelter within its hole for herself and the 100 horsemen accompanying her on a visit to Etna, when they got caught in a storm. However, the details of this story are quite limited, beginning with the name of the queen whom the story calls Joan, but nobody is quite sure whether she came from Aragon (in northeast Spain) or Anjou (in northwest France). The history books have no record of a Queen Joan visiting Sicily.
In any case, the tale and the tree have certainly been around since the 16th century. In the mid-18th century it was already put on record that it could shelter 30 horsemen and 300 sheep. Its hole may have been opened up by man or,more likely, was formed by branches growing around over the centuries.
A Scottish traveler in the 1770s,Patrick Brydone, was at first uncertain whether it was one tree or five or more which had grown together, but in the end he let himself be convinced that the trunk was undoubtedly of one tree.He measured its circumference (周长) as being 204 feet (62 meters).A painting of the chestnut tree by W.H.Bartlett in his Pictures from Sicily, published in 1853, showed the hole in the tree which could have probably contained the donkey and the two boys seen resting in its shade. In 1965, the tree was declared a national monument as the oldest tree in Europe.
6.Why were people in Sant'Alfio worried that evening?
A. A violent volcanic eruption took place.
B.Their crops might be destroyed by floods.

D.The town was threatened by fire from Mount Etna.
7.What happened during the queen's visit to Mount Etna?
A.A hundred horses appeared under the tree.
