第一节 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

Newspapers are not nearly as popular today as they were in the past. There are not many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people read only the sports pages, the advice or the gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. Most people don't take time to read the real news. They attempt to catch the readers'interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. The first page attracts attention and encourages the readers to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and a headline to make them stop and look.If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps they will not go on to read the front page anymore. They may read the headlines, but that is all, then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements.
It seems that people do not want the news from a newspaper anymore. They say they get the news on the television now.More people watch television news because it is easier and more interesting than reading a newspaper. What about you? Do you read news from a newspaper? Do you think it is easier to get the news from television? Or don't you care about news at all?Would you mind if there were no news?

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don't talk.Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger or move another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say, “Pardon me.”or“Excuse me.”
Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite.
For Americans, thumbs-up means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are signing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger (食指).Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.

The sun has been the inspiration for hundreds of songs, but now scientists have discovered that the star at the centre of our solar system produces its own music.Astronomers at the University of Sheffield have managed to record for the first time in the world the eerie musical harmonies produced by the magnetic field (磁场) in the outer atmosphere of the sun.
They found that huge coronal loops (日冕环) that have been observed spinning away from the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere vibrate (振动) like strings on a musical instrument.Using satellite pictures of these loops, which can be over 60,000 miles long, the scientists were able to recreate the sound by turning the visible vibrations into noises and speeding up the frequency so that people can hear them.
Professor Robertus von Fáy-Siebenbürgen said, “It was strangely beautiful and exciting to hear these noises for the first time from such a large and powerful source. It is providing us with a new way of learning about the sun and giving us a new insight into the physics about the sun's outer layers where temperatures reach millions of de grees.”
The coronal loops are thought to be involved in the production of solar flares that throw magnetic energy out into space, creating a phenomenon known as space weather. When the sun's activity, and thus solar flare production, increases, the resulting “space storm” can have severe results here on earth, destroying electronic equipment, overheating power networks and damaging satellites.Professor Fáy-Siebenbürgen said that studying the“music of the sun” would provide new ways of understanding and predicting solar flares before they happen.
Professor Fáy-Siebenbürgen's research has been shown as the University of Sheffield sets up a new project, called Project Sunshine, aimed at finding new ways to control the power of the sun.“These loops are vibrating like the strings on a guitar.Over time the waves die away and that is telling us new things about the physics in the sun's atmosphere,”he said.

基础写作
Hello, everyone. I'd like to share my ideas about the topic of communicating with our friends. In the first place not only should we show respect for our friends but also it is necessary to trust them. With respect and trust given to them, they in return will certainly regard you as the one who can be relied on, deepening your communication in some ways. Moreover, it's good to have a chat with our friends at times, which will strengthen mutual understanding. Of course what we should pay more attention to is to put ourselves in their shoes, experiencing what they are thinking of and find out an appropriate way to communicate better. In one word, sincerity and consideration counts to make communication more smooth between our friends and us.
读写任务
In the text the writer tells us one of his touching experiences when working as an intern at Oxford University Museum of Natural History. The disabled girl gave him a valuable lesson.
No one can live a smooth life in the world. We may come across all kinds of difficulties and troubles no matter who you are. I used to feel sad and would be in low spirits when I was in trouble. I often felt that I was the poorest person in the world. Sometimes I cried and complained about my life.
After reading the article I have learned an important lesson from the girl. I am deeply moved by her sweet smiles. From now on, I will not lose heart, though hard life may come to me. I will bravely raise my head in the face of difficulties. Thus my life will be full of sunshine and pleasure.

Ⅲ.阅读理解
When I was 12 years old, I was at a very hard stage in life.I was short and fat, which was bad for a girl, so coordination (协调) was not one of my strongest features. On the other hand, my mother was a very talented softball player who even acted as my coach.Night after night, I would try my best to impress “my coach”.Unfortunately, I just felt like a terrible disappointment to my mother.
One summer afternoon, my mother told us we were going to visit Uncle David.Since we lived in an apartment, going to the country was quite a treat. My uncle David always had a way of making me feel special.
When we arrived, my uncle and cousin Jeff were throwing metal rings at two holes in the ground.I was curious about what they were doing so I went over to watch.Noticing that I was standing there, my uncle asked if I had ever played washers.
Being a “city girl”, my reply was that the only “washers” I knew were the ones that cleaned clothes. To my embarrassment, Uncle David chuckling(咯咯笑), explained that the metal rings were called washers.I was shocked to hear my uncle saying he wanted me to take his place. He then gave me the washers and gave tips on how to throw better.
Unwillingly, I joined Jeff.Gradually, I found myself not only enjoying but also wanting to win this game. The washer went into the air and began to fall. Then a cloud of dust appeared as the washer sank into the hole.My first try! I had actually thrown the washer into the hole!
Although twenty-three summers have gone by since that day, this small success in washer playing helped me get back self-confidence lost when I struggled with the game of softball.

If there is one thing I'm sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that many directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future, I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact, I'm pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspapers by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体).They actually feed_off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn't happened. What it read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air.And as for the Internet,it's never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.

One evening in early September it started raining volcanic stones in Sant'Alfio,a small town leading up to the craters of Mount Etna in Sicily,Italy. The town's people were badly frightened. But their main concern was not for their destroyed crops but for the town's greatest treasure,a chestnut tree believed to be more than 2,000 years old.Happily, the tree, which has survived many disasters and not only from the fires of Etna, remained unharmed this time too.
Known as“the Chestnut Tree of 100 Horses”, the tree acquired its name from a tale in which a queen found shelter within its hole for herself and the 100 horsemen accompanying her on a visit to Etna, when they got caught in a storm. However, the details of this story are quite limited, beginning with the name of the queen whom the story calls Joan, but nobody is quite sure whether she came from Aragon (in northeast Spain) or Anjou (in northwest France). The history books have no record of a Queen Joan visiting Sicily.
In any case, the tale and the tree have certainly been around since the 16th century. In the mid-18th century it was already put on record that it could shelter 30 horsemen and 300 sheep. Its hole may have been opened up by man or,more likely, was formed by branches growing around over the centuries.
A Scottish traveler in the 1770s,Patrick Brydone, was at first uncertain whether it was one tree or five or more which had grown together, but in the end he let himself be convinced that the trunk was undoubtedly of one tree.He measured its circumference (周长) as being 204 feet (62 meters).A painting of the chestnut tree by W.H.Bartlett in his Pictures from Sicily, published in 1853, showed the hole in the tree which could have probably contained the donkey and the two boys seen resting in its shade. In 1965, the tree was declared a national monument as the oldest tree in Europe.
