I was doing some Christmas shopping in a toy store when I saw a nicely dressed little girl looking through the dolls with a roll of money in her hand. When she came upon a Barbie she liked, she turned and asked her father if she had enough money to buy it. He said, “Yes.”
Then a little boy walked in and started sorting through the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but in clothes that were obviously rather worn. He also had money in his hand, but it looked to be at most five dollars. He was also with his father, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head, saying, “No.”
The little girl chose her Barbie, a beautiful doll that would be the envy of every other girl on the block. However, she stopped and was watching the interchange between the little boy and his father. Rather disappointed, the boy gave up the video toys. He and his father then started walking through another section of the store.
The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one on the top and raced towards the check-out, after speaking with her father.
After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier and whispered something in her ear. The cashier smiled and put the package under the counter. A few minutes later the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier rang up his purchases and said, “Congratulations, you are my 100th customer today, and you win a prize.” With that, she handed the little boy the Pokemon toy, and he could only stare at it in doubt. It was, he said, exactly what he had wanted.

“Wash your hands!” How many times have you heard that from your parents? You might think they’re just nagging (唠叨) you, but actually the most important thing you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if you don’t wash your hands frequently, you can pick up germs from other sources and then infect yourself. You’re at risk every time you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. In fact, one of the most common ways people catch colds is by rubbing their noses or their eyes after the cold virus has gotten on their hands.
If people don’t wash their hands frequently (especially when they’re sick), they can spread germs directly to other people or onto surfaces that others touch. And before they know it, everyone around them is coming down with something!
Think about all of the things that you touched today — from the telephone to the toilet. Maybe you blew your nose and played with your dog. Whatever you did, you came into contact with germs. So it’s easy for germs on your hand to end up in your mouth.
By frequently washing your hands the right way, you’ll wash away germs — such as bacteria and viruses — that you have picked up from other people, through polluted water and food, from tainted (被污染的) surfaces, or from animals and animal wastes.
Do you know that 1 out of 5 people don’t wash their hands after using the restroom? Students don’t wash their hands often or well. In one study, only 58% of female and 48% of male middle-school and high-school students washed their hands after using the bathroom.
Remember, proper and frequent hand washing is the key to preventing the spread of many common infections.
44. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Some parents are always nagging children.
B. We will catch colds if we rub our noses often.
C. If we can wash our hands often, we will never get sick.
D. It is easy for us to catch colds if we get the cold virus on our hands.
45. The underlined part in Paragraph 3 probably means “ ”.
A. falling to the ground B. seeing you with gifts
C. getting an illness D. leaving you alone
46. After using the restroom, don’t wash their hands.
A. more girl students B. most students
C. more boy students D. 20 percent of the students
47. How to prevent the spread of the virus?
A. To keep away from germs. B. To wash hands often.
C. Not to touch dirty things. D. Not to keep dogs.
D
Cultural differences between people within any given nation or country are much greater than differences between groups. Education, social standing, religion, race and other factors all affect human behavior and culture.
Many differences in culture have something to do with customs or what each culture considers politeness. In some cultures “yes” means “I hear you” more than “I agree”. In México it is usual for the arriving person to greet the others. For instance, someone who walks into a group of persons eating would say “Enjoy your meal”. In Chile, women often greet both other women and men with a kiss on the cheek. In Russia women often walk arm in arm with their female friends. Paying attention to the effect that the custom has on cultural differences can give someone outside that culture a better chance of acceptance.
Cross-cultural communication can easily be affected by status (地位) differences, which can create barriers (障碍) between cultures and even within organizations. At times, it may appear that some workers or students, especially when they are in a social or race difference, won’t join in the others. This is not because they do not have ideas to do so, but because they are afraid the others will look down upon them or they don’t know how to deal with the ones above them. Sometimes some employees and students avoid seeing their heads or their teachers.
For example, in East Africa, a non-black manager speaks to the black African clerk and the clerk makes little eye contact and responds submissively (顺从地) “Yes, Sir.” regardless of what he hears. When the manager leaves, this same clerk makes plenty of eye contact and is full of ideas and creativity when dealing with his workmates. Breaking through status barriers can take time and effort.
48. Which of the following cannot affect people’s behavior according to the passage?
A. Knowledge. B. Life styles. C. The belief. D. Social status.
49. In the second paragraph the writer gives examples to .
A. explain why people have different cultures
B. explain cultural differences are very important
C. prove cultural differences exist everywhere
D. prove the custom affects cultural differences
50. Why do some students avoid seeing their teacher?
A. They do not respect or like their teacher.
B. They’re afraid the teacher will scold them.
C. They don’t know how to deal with the teacher.
D. They are so shy that the teacher dislikes them.
51. From the passage we can learn that .
A. status barriers help people communicate
B. breaking through status barriers is not easy
C. cross-cultural communication doesn’t exist
D. cultural differences affect people’s friendship
E
People tend (趋向) to tell the truth more when asked questions through the text message because they have more time to think. It also includes sensitive information that the person might not normally reveal (透露). It’s a good way to get true answers from friends.
“The results of our study suggest that people are more likely to disclose (泄露) sensitive information through text messages than in voice interviews,” says Fred Conrad, a psychologist at the University of Michigan. “This is surprising, since many people thought that texting would decrease the possibility of disclosing sensitive information because it creates a lasting record of questions and answers that others might see on your phone.”
“When texting, people are more likely to give exact answers. We believe people give more exact answers through texting because there’s just not the time pressure,” says Conrad. “As a result, they are able to take longer to arrive at more exact answers.”
“We’re in the early stages of analyzing our findings,” says Schober, a professor of psychology at The New School for Social Research. “But so far it seems that texting may reduce some people’s tendency to hide the truth or to present themselves in the best possible light in an interview — even when they know it’s a human interviewer they are communicating with through texting.”
For the study, the researchers interviewed about 600 iPhone-users through the Web, offering them awards for joining in the study. Their goals were to see whether answers to the same questions differed depending on several variables (变量): whether the questions were asked through text or voice, whether a human being or a computer asked the questions, and whether the environment affected the answers. They found people are more likely to provide honest answers through text messages.
52. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. People may make more true friends through text messages.
B. People prefer to ask their friends questions by sending text messages.
C. People tend to send text messages to others when they have more time.
D. People are more likely to tell the truth when asked questions through text messages.
53. When the results of the research came out, Fred Conrad felt a bit .
A. excited B. amazed C. happy D. worried
54. People would give more exact answers by texting because .
A. they feel free from the time stress
B. they can find answers more easily
C. texting reduces the fear of being laughed at
D. texting allows them to use shorter expressions
55. According to the passage, the researchers studied the following variables EXCEPT .
A. whether the questions were asked by text or voice
B. whether the environment had an influence on the answers
C. whether iPhone-users would be offered awards in the study
D. whether the questions were asked by a human being or a computer

It is necessary for a person to give back what he has borrowed because the timely return makes it easier to borrow a second time, which is based on a rule of honesty and consideration. Honesty is what connects people closer and makes their friendship last longer. If we give careful consideration to other people, we will gain people’s trust. So, always keep it in mind that we should be considerate and do whatever we should.
写作二
Good morning, everyone!
I am glad to stand here talking about after-school activities. Many parents and teachers don’t allow students to take part in after-school activities, because they think these activities waste a lot of time. As students, it is our duty to make full use of time to study. However, learning from textbooks is not our only task and we should also take every chance to get some practical knowledge and improve our social skills. On the one hand, after long hours of study, we can relax and enjoy ourselves by participating in some after-school activities, which is beneficial to our health. On the other hand, we can get some valuable experience required in modern society.
That’s all! Thank you!

Jenny, my colleague, had a very bad day in the office. She made a big mistake at work and was scolded (斥责) by the manager for quite a while. When she came out of the manager’s office, it was already time to go home. Since her car had broken down, I offered her a lift. While I drove her home, Jenny sat in thoughtful silence.
On arriving, Jenny invited me to meet her family. As we walked towards the front door, she paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door to her home, she showed an amazing change. Smiles appeared on her face and she hugged her two kids and gave her husband a kiss.
After a cup of tea, she walked me to my car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked her about what I had seen her do earlier. “Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” Jenny replied. “I know I can’t help having troubles with the job, but one thing is for sure — troubles don’t belong in the house with my husband and the children. So I just hang them on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again. The funny thing is when I come out in the morning to pick them up, there aren’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

Last weekend, the IMAX documentary Island of Lemurs: Madagascar opened in theaters. The film was made to encourage people to protect lemurs (狐猴). They are one of the world’s smallest primates (灵长类动物), and are only found in Madagascar. Because of hunting and habitat loss, some researchers now say the lemurs of Madagascar are “the most threatened mammal group on the earth”. Here are some other threatened and endangered animals that have made headlines recently.
Polar bears are considered an endangered species because their ice habitat, which they use to reach their prey (猎物), is melting away. This forces polar bears to swim longer to find places to hunt their prey. Now you can see them without leaving your home, thanks to Google Street View.
Every April, birders flock (聚集) to the Central Wisconsin Prairie Chicken Festival to see the lesser prairie chicken’s mating dance. On March 27 this year, the Obama administration updated the feathered animal’s status to “threatened” — a step below “endangered” — after the species’ population hit the record low number last year.
Snow leopards living in the mountains of Central Asia have been recognized as an endangered species since 1972 because of hunting and the illegal trading of fur and body parts, which are used in traditional Asian medicine. Their white and gray fur helps them blend into their natural surroundings, and they have extra-large paws to prevent them from sinking into the snow, according to the Snow Leopard Trust.
The humpback whales that flock to breeding grounds in Hawaii sing a 20-minute mating song that can be heard as far as 20 miles away. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is now considering removing the North Pacific population of the whales from the endangered species list. Their number has increased since the international community banned commercial (商业的) whaling nearly 50 years ago.

If you hear the sound of a mobile phone beeping in a bag or pocket, you could think that someone has received a text message. Text messaging, or texting, is the art of sending a short, electronic message between two mobile phones. The users should pay a certain amount to send messages via SMS — short message service. But in the last few years, with the development of smart phones, messaging in this way has been at a low ebb.
The rise of smart phones has seen an increase in the use of instant messaging apps. The apps offer a cheap alternative (替换) to traditional texts. Using wireless Internet connections, people can send a number of messages to their friends at a very low cost. Unlike traditional mobile texts, the users usually only have to pay to download the app once, after which each message they send is free.
Instant messaging apps have become popular all over the world. Hundreds of millions of people use the apps to chat with their friends. These apps allow people to send picture messages for free — something which previously was quite costly. Many of these apps also allow users to have access to a huge range of colorful emoticons (表情符), which can help people express their emotions.
The research company Informa said that almost 19 billion messages were sent per day using chat apps last year, compared with 17.6 billion SMS texts. And it expects the chat app market to grow to 50 billion per day by 2015. So does this really mean the end of communicating by texting?
Pamela Clark-Dickson from Informa doesn’t think so. She says that there are a large number of people who use normal mobile phones, particularly in developing countries and prefer the SMS messaging tool. For the moment, these users still find that SMS is the best messaging experience for them.

Danah Boyd has a message for parents: almost everything we think we know about the way our kids are using the Internet is wrong. Boyd’s new book, It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, makes the case that the Internet isn’t nearly as scary or damaging to young people as many moms and dads believe.
Technology is not turning our teens into social misfits.
“Most of the teens that I met were eager for the opportunity to leave their homes to gather with friends,” she writes. The trouble is that young people have less freedom to wander because they are so over scheduled and because parents are worried about their safety. To make up for this lost freedom, teens have turned to their computers.
The Internet isn’t full of sexual predators waiting to prey on our children.
Boyd is careful here, not wanting to hurt parents’ concern about kids’ security. “They are afraid because terrible things do happen to children,” she says. In fact, studies show that teenagers are far more likely to be attacked by a family member or someone else they know from school than by an adult they meet online.
Adolescents aren’t as Internet expert as we like to think.
Although teens are considered as “digital natives” for having grown up practically glued to their computers, they remain unsophisticated (单纯的) in many ways about what they find online. After all, they’re just kids. “The name ‘digital natives’, far from being useful, often makes us ignore the challenges that youths face in the networked world,” says Boyd.
One area in which young people need help is in learning to tell the difference between good and bad sources of information. “Teens may make their own media or share content online,” Boyd says, “but this does not mean that they inherently (天性地) have the knowledge about critically examining what they get.”
51. All the following are reasons why teens prefer connecting online EXCEPT that .
A. they are busy with school tasks
B. they prefer talking to online friends
C. they are asked not to play outside by parents
D. they have little opportunity to play with friends
52. In the eyes of Boyd, who is the least dangerous to teenagers?
A. Friends teenagers meet online.
B. Friends teenagers make in school.
C. People teenagers know in school.
D. Family members teenagers know best.
53. What does Boyd think of the nickname “digital natives” given to teenagers?
A. It is acceptable. B. It is totally a wrong idea.
C. It shows misunderstanding about teenagers.
D. It can mislead teenagers into finding negative information online.
54. According to the last two paragraphs, what challenges do teens meet on the Internet?
A. How to tell right from wrong.
B. How to get enough information.
C. Whether to make online friends or not.
D. How to protect their personal information.
55. What does the author mainly intend to tell us?
A. Teens should know how to protect themselves online.
B. The Internet is a safer place for teens than parents think.
C. Parents should give teenagers more time to play with friends.
D. We should make the Internet open for teenagers to use as they like.

This survey shows that some students’ are suffering from high blood pressure, which is a serious disease. However, what should we do to prevent young people suffering from it? In my opinion, firstly, middle school students should have a balanced diet. Secondly, we should set aside enough time to take some proper exercise.
