On my first job as a sports editor, I didn’t get a lot of fan mails, so I was surprised to see a letter on my desk one morning. When I opened it, I read: “Sweet piece of writing on the Tigers. Keep up the good work.”
It was signed (署名) by Don Wolfe, the sports editor. Because I was a green hand, his words could not have been more encouraging. I kept the letter in my desk drawer for a long time. Whenever I doubted I had the talent to be an editor, I would reread Don’s note and be confident again.
Later, when I got to know him, I learned that Don had a habit of writing encouraging notes to people in all walks of life. “When I make others feel good about themselves,” he told me, “I feel good, too.”
Why are encouraging note writers in such short supply? My guess is that many who shy away from the practice are too self-conscious. They are afraid they will be misunderstood. Also, writing takes time and it is far easier to pick up the phone. The disadvantage with phone calls, of course, is that they do not last. It is a matter of record, and our words in a note can be read more than once and treasured.
So, who around you deserves a note of thanks or approval? A neighbor, your librarian, a relative, your mate, a teacher, or a doctor? Words such as “greatest”, “smartest”, “prettiest” make us all feel good. Even if your praise runs a little ahead of reality, remember that expectations are often the parents of dreams realized.
36. What might be the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To express thanks to the sports editor.
B. To tell us the power of encouraging notes.
C. To explain how to write encouraging notes.
D. To ask readers to give encouragement to others.
37. Why did the sports editor write the author a letter?
A. To comfort him. B. To give him a new task.
C. To promote his business. D. To encourage him to work better.
38. The author doesn’t suggest making a phone call because _____.
A. it doesn’t last B. it is quite direct
C. it can be recorded D. it is easier to misunderstand
39. From the text, we can infer that _____.
A. being a sports editor is not very interesting
B. where there is a dream, there is a hope
C. Don Wolfe used to be a sportsman
D. people like to be praised
B
Most of the energy we use now is made from “non-renewable” sources. The good news is we have plenty of alternatives– the wind, sun and water can provide “renewable (可再生的) energy” which will never run out and does not give off carbon dioxide and therefore is good for the environment.
So, what would a world powered by nature look like? Let’s think about how your day might change.
As you are woken up, the solar panels (太阳能电池板) on your roof would heat the water you bathe with. In the kitchen your mum would make breakfast with a kettle that could tell you just how much energy you are using, and where it’s coming from – maybe from solar panels too. As you and your family leave the house, a “Smart” energy meter (仪表) would be able to tell you the amount of energy your family has used so far.
You would get in your family’s electric car, which would not give off any bad smoke. On your way to school, you would notice all the houses you pass have solar panels on their roofs and maybe a small wind turbine (风力涡轮机) if they were built on a hill, and some have water tanks collecting rain water to be reused. There would be no petrol stations, but you might see many other stations instead, where you could recharge (再充电) your car.
Your school would also look different. Like your house, the roof would probably be covered with solar panels. Inside, the school would be heated by a biomass boiler (生物质锅炉), which burns recycled wood chips. A renewable cooling system in the school means that in the summer it will never get too warm!
To make this renewable future possible, we need to think carefully about where our energy comes from and how we use it.
40. What wouldn’t you see on the way to school according to the text?
A. Petrol stations. B. Solar panels on the roofs.
C. Small wind turbines. D. Water tanks collecting rain water.
41. Which of the following best describes the world mentioned in the text?
A. Healthy and safe.
B. Convenient but unpractical.
C. Energy-saving but too complex.
D. Intelligent and free from pollution.
42. Which might be the best title for the text?
A. Life in the future B. A world powered by nature
C. The ways to preserve energ y D. Renewable energy in the future

If you have ever wondered what Noah’ s Ark (诺亚方舟), the enormous boat that saved Noah, his family and two examples of every animal species on the earth, may have looked like, you are in luck. That’s because a Dutchman (荷兰人) has created a life-size replica (复制品).
Johan Huibers says he was inspired to build a boat after he dreamt that his country was completely flooded! The carpenter began by creating a smaller version of what he likes to call Johan’s Ark in 2004. Not surprisingly, it was an instant hit with tourists. Encouraged by the success, he used the funds generated from ticket sales, and in 2009 recruited (雇用) his two children and some friends, to build a version of the same size as the one described in the Bible.
What’s even more amazing is the detail that lies inside. Just like the real deal, Johan has built storage spaces at the bottom of the ship where food can be kept for long periods of time. A curved (弯曲的) upper deck (甲板) is not only designed to accumulate rainwater, but also, serve as an “exercise” track for animals like horses and big cats!
As for the animals? While the area inside is big enough to allow two real elephants to dance, Johan has restrained (抑制) that impulse! Instead, he has populated it with plastic substitutes of the animal and also giraffes, zebras and even buffalos (野牛)—all life-size of course! But smaller species like chickens, sheep and rabbits got luckier. They are all alive and seem to be enjoying their life inside the Ark’s “petting” zoo.
43. What pushed Johan to start making a life-size replica of Noah’s Ark?
A. An interest in the Bible. B. Fear of the end of the world.
C. The success of Johan’s first boat.
D. A terrible experience in the Netherlands.
44. A curved upper deck is specially designed to _____.
A. store plenty of food B. hold more large animals
C. meet the need of animals D. prevent rainwater from getting in
45. The underlined part “that impulse” in the last paragraph refers to “_____”.
A. taking small animals onboard B. bringing in large live animals

If you see a group of kids hitting and abusing an animal, would you stop them? Would you at least call the police? Again people would walk away. Some people do not believe that animal abuse is a big issue.
Every day animals are abused in their homes or on the streets. It seems as if politicians do nothing to stop this issue. Everyone is worried about education and global warming. What about animals? We should not ignore them just because they cannot talk to us. Animals, like us humans, have rights. Every living being has the right to warm shelter and good food, but most importantly, they have the right to be wanted and loved. They have the right to be a special, much loved member of their own family.
There are many organizations that deal with abused animals or animals that have no home like ASPCA, PETA, the Humane Society and many more. There are organizations that deal with this issue, but that does not mean that we still shouldn’t help. The biggest saying that bothers me is, “I am only one person. I can’t make a difference.” If everyone thought like that, we wouldn’t have the organizations and loving people who help the world every day. By helping one animal, you are making a difference.
There are many things you can do right now to help animals around your neighborhood. You can volunteer at your local animal shelter, raise money for animal shelters, inform your community about animal abuse or you can write to your representatives and tell them that animal abuse needs to be taken seriously.
As you walk down the street, try to help any animals you see walking around. You can easily buy a cheap box of dry cat or dog food to feed the animals. If we do not help our animals now, we may never have animals again. Always remember that with every step you take, you help save an animal’s life and isn’t that worth fighting for?

A. Dogs have the right to be treated kindly.
B. One person cannot possibly make a difference.
C. Cruelty to animals deserves more attention than global warming.
D. It is the politicians’ duty to stop animal abuse.
54. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us?
A. How to provide shelter for animals.

It all started when I was 11 years old. I had just moved schools. Everything was all right at the beginning. I even made a few friends.
A few months later, however, the school decided to make a completely new class in order to make the classes smaller, because it helped with learning and avoiding bullying (恃强凌弱). Then I was chosen to be moved from my old class to the new one. At first, it was fine. Everyone ignored (忽视) me, but I was happy to be left alone. Then it started. One day after school, a few people from my new class came up to me.
“Hi,” a girl called Molly said, “wanna be friends?”
I said, “Yes.” She laughed and told me that she was sorry but she and her friends couldn’t be friends with loners (喜欢独处的人) like me.
A few more situations like that followed. For a few weeks I was beaten up almost every day after school. When I told the teacher, she said I couldn’t move classes and that was final. I started cutting myself and cried myself to sleep every night. But after a few more months of putting up with (忍受) that, I decided to tell my family. They didn’t do anything at first, but after a while they got tired of my complaining about how I hated school and talked to the head teacher. New York City streets are full of yellow cabs. Some, however, are better than others. Now, there is a Candy Cab waiting for you. It is a free candy store on wheels.
Mansoor Khalid, a taxi driver, started handing out candy in 2012 following the death of his one-year-old son. While his son was in hospital, Mansoor often took coffee and sweets for the nurses and saw how happy they were.
Wanting to feel some joy again he began putting a box of candy on the passenger seats, just to see their happy face. There was more and more candy, because Mansoor Khalid realized that the sweet treats made everyone smile and “Candy Cab” was born! The kind man who spends over $300 each month on the sweets says that seeing his passengers happy makes his job more fun.
The sweet service begins as soon as the passenger gets into the cab which has a sign that reads, “No eating or drinking inside this car except candies.” The kind driver even offers a free ride to the passengers that can finish all the candy he puts in front of them. However, so far, no one has been able to complete the challenge.
Not surprisingly, Mansoor Khalid gets plenty of smiles and hugs and also thousands of warm messages. But the best part about the Candy Cab is that you don’t need to depend on luck. Interested passengers can simply request it by sending Khalid a message and they will be picked up at no extra cost. So, the next time you are in New York City, see if you can find this real-life Candyland on wheels!

Imagine walking to your local park on a warm summer afternoon and sitting down under a tree with a good book and a freshly picked apple. That is exactly what the clever minds behind Seattle’s Beacon Food Forest Project are hoping to do for all its residents (居民) in the near future.
The project is just 2.5 miles from the center of Seattle, close to the city’s popular Jefferson Park. It was started in February, 2012 and is being developed on seven acres (英亩) of land. Using $100,000 from the US government, hundreds of volunteers are working hard, developing the first two acres of the food forest. So far, the park that will be open to the public later this summer is home to 35 trees. They are expected to start producing fruits next year. The volunteers have also completed a large amount of decoration work to make the park more attractive.
Besides delicious fruits like strawberries and apples, residents will also be able to pick vegetables and even tree nuts. When the park is completely developed, it will be home to as many as 200 types of useful plants. And it will also include 50 individual gardens and a special area for free and paid workshops on a lot of different topics. There will also be special areas for picnics and for kids to play in, after they have had a freshly picked piece of fruit of course!
When it is completed, according to Glen Herlihy, a local resident, the park will be nice, although a little denser (更茂密的) than a normal park. Teddy bears survived the Titanic! There were two teddy bears that survived the Titanic in fact. One belonged to a man and the other was a child’s. This just goes to show you that teddy bears were always around and that everyone loved such a bear. Believe it or not, Gaspare Luigi Gatti, who was a grown man and not a young boy, carried the teddy bear wherever he went. You didn’t see him on the ship without it. He drowned, along with 1,500 other passengers.
The little teddy bear survived the accident, and was seen floating in the water. It was picked up by someone. Later it would be given back to Gaspare’s widow Merry and she would in turn hand it over to a museum. In 1992, Merry thought of recreating (重做) this bear in honor of the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, and it was to remember the dead passengers, including her husband. Only 5,000 of these bears were made, each one had yellow hair and stood to be 8 inches tall.
But Gaspare wasn’t the only one with a teddy bear on the Titanic that day. A little boy named Douglas was on the ship with his teddy bear “Polar” and his mother. They all survived the sinking of the ship; however Douglas might have soon died by a car accident. After the death of her son, Daisy wrote a picture book titled “Polar the Titanic Bear”. Daisy never let this book come out. In fact it was many years later that her great grandnephew (重侄孙) found it hidden away inside her room. The Steiff Company made a reproduction (复制) of “Polar” of only 1,000 bears.
