Zack was an ordinary boy, just like any other boy. He studied in school, took part in sports, and had his own friends and problems, like everybody else.
One day, a friend recommended (推荐) him to play a computer game. Though Zack was more of an outdoor person and did not really like sitting inside too long, he decided to give it a try. To his great surprise, he loved it and finally understood the wonders of using the Internet.
Soon he started to spend more and more time playing computer games and no longer played basketball or any other sports. His parents were not so concerned firstly. They thought it was very common for boys of his age to develop such an interest in the Internet. But his studies were starting to get affected (受影响). Finally, the report cards came in and to his parents’ and friends’ surprise, Zack had failed in every subject.
His parents were called for a meeting about Zack’s studies. After some questioning, it was clear that computer games were completely destroying Zack’s mind. Both his parents were asked to have a serious talk with Zack.
Zack’s parents gave him a long lecture (训斥) about the disadvantages of the Internet but their words entered through one ear and escaped through the other one. Zack continued to play computer games and chat online with others whenever the opportunity came to him. His English teacher was surprised to see that Zack had started to use “u, r, lolz, coz” etc. in his homework. She told his parents immediately about this.

Middle school is called middle school because it’s in the middle of your school years. Elementary school (小学) is behind you. High school still waits for you. Middle school often includes sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
For a kid, going to middle school is often a big change: first, it means moving to a new building; second, it may mean taking a different bus with different students; third, the friends you made in elementary school may go to different middle schools. Other things that probably will be different are the teachers and the homework. All that can make you feel a bit scared on the first day of middle school.
Your homework will likely get more challenging (有挑战性的). In middle school you’ll probably be learning some new subjects like foreign languages. You may also learn different stuff like more advanced (高级的) courses in computer technology, music and art, health, and life skills, such as cooking, even though you’ve learned some about them in elementary school. On top of that, middle school will probably offer you a variety of new teams, clubs, and activities.
Besides, you might wonder how to make new friends in middle school. Here’s something: try joining a club or a sports team. It’s a great way to get to know new kids. Being in these groups also can help you feel at ease (自由自在,舒适). By next year, you’ll be that cool older kid who’s helping out the new kid. If he gets lost on the way to the gym, please show him the way!
4. According to the passage, kids may feel a little when they go to middle school on the first day.
A. proud B. upset C. excited D. afraid
5. Which of the following may students not learn in elementary school?
A. Foreign languages. B. Computer technology.
C. Music and art. D. Life skills.
6. The author hopes that the kids will be able to in middle school.
A. study harder B. keep in touch with their friends
C. help out new students D. take part in all kinds of activities
7. This passage is mainly written to .
A. kids’ parents B. kids to begin middle school
C. kids’ teachers D. students to move to a new school

The man, George Ballas, who found an easier way for people to cut grass and weeds, died in Houston on June 25th. He was 85 years old.
George Ballas was born in Louisiana. He joined the army at 17. He served in the Second World War and the Korean War. Then he became a dance teacher in a dance school. In the 1950s, he built a dance studio of his own in Houston, and it was the biggest in the world at that time. But he sold the studio in 1964.
By the early seventies, he was on to the next big thing. An idea occurred to him when he washed his car. He watched the needle-like bristles (刷子毛) of the brushes as they went round and round against his car. Could a similar tool be used to cut grass instead of pushing a lawn mower (割草机)? To find out, he placed lengths of fishing line through holes in a tin can. He tied the can to the spinning (旋转) part of a grass machine. The result? A new thing for millions of people who cut grass for a living or just to keep their neighbors happy came out.
George Ballas became known as the “Weed King”. As he once told the Houston Chronicle, “A weed eater comes along once in a lifetime.” His invention now still works well in corners and along walls and fences. The noise may not be the nicest, but nor is a loud mower. Just as a weed expert Bill Curran at Penn State University points out, with the tool, people are freed from pulling weeds by hand.
8. Before teaching in a dance school, George .
A. served in the army B. studied in a dancing school
C. was an owner of a dance studio D. earned money by cutting grass
9. How long did George keep his dance studio?
A. 15 years. B. 20 years. C. Less than 14 years. D. More than 50 years.
10. Which of the following is NOT true about George’s invention?
A. It is welcomed by people. B. It made him become a weed expert.
C. It could be used to cut grass instead of pushing a lawn mower.
D. He thought of the idea when he was washing his car.
11. We know from the last paragraph that .
A. the machine makes little noises
B. the machine can be used everywhere
C. George Ballas became famous for his invention
D. with George Ballas’ invention, people don’t need to cut grass
D
When I was in college, I remembered hearing about a book, Looking Out for Number One. I never read the book, because I didn’t like its title. I hadn’t been taught to be so selfish that I should be focused on only me. I thought I should help others and, along the way, I would also help myself. Now, I realize I should have at least considered learning more about looking out for number one.
Over 30 years after reading the book about looking out for number one I realize number one, me, is the person I should be concerned about first. Jeffrey Gitomer asks the question, “Who is the most important person in the world?” Most people answer, “The customer (顾客).” He then asks, “If there were only two people left in the world, the customer and you, who would you want to survive?” Now the answer is me.
It makes sense (有道理) that if we can’t help ourselves first, we will never be able to help others. We all need to learn to control our lives and make the best decisions for ourselves. That will put us in a position to help others in the future. But many of us fail to understand this.
It has been said that happiness will bring success, but success doesn’t always bring happiness. For some of us we can be very happy when our basic needs are satisfied (满意的). Others will seek for (寻求) high levels of success. I’m sure we can think of people who are very successful, according to the world’s standards, but they don’t appear to be happy at all. This is because they have been so busy working for somebody else’s goal that they haven’t considered their own needs.
12. According to the author, who is the most important person in the world now?
A. Others. B. Oneself. C. The customer. D. Jeffrey Gitomer.
13. From the third paragraph we can learn .
A. we should help others instead of ourselves
B. we should help others make best decisions
C. helping others can help control our lives
D. few of us understand the real meaning of looking out for number one
14. Why do some successful people not feel happy at all?
A. Because they don’t believe success always brings happiness.
B. Because their basic needs are not completely satisfied.
C. Because they seek for too high levels of success.
D. Because they haven’t worked for their own goals.
15. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The most important person in the world
B. How to look out for number one
C. Helping ourselves first
D. Happiness and success

Dear Li Ming,
I just returned from America. Now, I’m writing to tell you about my experience here. I first arrived in New York by the plane. Walked in the biggest city in the world, I really enjoy its modern life. Then I went to the capital of the USA —Washington D.C., which I visited the White House. I invited to two high schools, all of which were equipped with the latest teaching equipment. And I felt that the environment there was very wonderfully. During the trip, Americans were very friendly with me. I decided I would work hard to build our motherland but make it much stronger.
Best wishes!

One possible version:
Recently I have done a survey about how the students in my class spent their lucky money. The results are as follows:
The survey, in which 60 students in our class were questioned, showed that two thirds of the students spent their lucky money buying books for studies. However, ten of them, especially some boys, spent the money on playing computer games and having dinners with their friends. The lucky money of the ten students, especially some girls, was spent on clothes and cosmetics.
According to the survey, most of the students can spend their money properly. As students, we should mainly spend our lucky money on studies rather than on something else. After all, money is earned through hard work by our parents.
