Zack was an ordinary boy, just like any other boy. He studied in school, took part in sports, and had his own friends and problems, like everybody else.
One day, a friend recommended (推荐) him to play a computer game. Though Zack was more of an outdoor person and did not really like sitting inside too long, he decided to give it a try. To his great surprise, he loved it and finally understood the wonders of using the Internet.
Soon he started to spend more and more time playing computer games and no longer played basketball or any other sports. His parents were not so concerned firstly. They thought it was very common for boys of his age to develop such an interest in the Internet. But his studies were starting to get affected (受影响). Finally, the report cards came in and to his parents’ and friends’ surprise, Zack had failed in every subject.
His parents were called for a meeting about Zack’s studies. After some questioning, it was clear that computer games were completely destroying Zack’s mind. Both his parents were asked to have a serious talk with Zack.
Zack’s parents gave him a long lecture (训斥) about the disadvantages of the Internet but their words entered through one ear and escaped through the other one. Zack continued to play computer games and chat online with others whenever the opportunity came to him. His English teacher was surprised to see that Zack had started to use “u, r, lolz, coz” etc. in his homework. She told his parents immediately about this.

Middle school is called middle school because it’s in the middle of your school years. Elementary school (小学) is behind you. High school still waits for you. Middle school often includes sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
For a kid, going to middle school is often a big change: first, it means moving to a new building; second, it may mean taking a different bus with different students; third, the friends you made in elementary school may go to different middle schools. Other things that probably will be different are the teachers and the homework. All that can make you feel a bit scared on the first day of middle school.
Your homework will likely get more challenging (有挑战性的). In middle school you’ll probably be learning some new subjects like foreign languages. You may also learn different stuff like more advanced (高级的) courses in computer technology, music and art, health, and life skills, such as cooking, even though you’ve learned some about them in elementary school. On top of that, middle school will probably offer you a variety of new teams, clubs, and activities.
Besides, you might wonder how to make new friends in middle school. Here’s something: try joining a club or a sports team. It’s a great way to get to know new kids. Being in these groups also can help you feel at ease (自由自在,舒适). By next year, you’ll be that cool older kid who’s helping out the new kid. If he gets lost on the way to the gym, please show him the way!

The man, George Ballas, who found an easier way for people to cut grass and weeds, died in Houston on June 25th. He was 85 years old.
George Ballas was born in Louisiana. He joined the army at 17. He served in the Second World War and the Korean War. Then he became a dance teacher in a dance school. In the 1950s, he built a dance studio of his own in Houston, and it was the biggest in the world at that time. But he sold the studio in 1964.
By the early seventies, he was on to the next big thing. An idea occurred to him when he washed his car. He watched the needle-like bristles (刷子毛) of the brushes as they went round and round against his car. Could a similar tool be used to cut grass instead of pushing a lawn mower (割草机)? To find out, he placed lengths of fishing line through holes in a tin can. He tied the can to the spinning (旋转) part of a grass machine. The result? A new thing for millions of people who cut grass for a living or just to keep their neighbors happy came out.
George Ballas became known as the “Weed King”. As he once told the Houston Chronicle, “A weed eater comes along once in a lifetime.” His invention now still works well in corners and along walls and fences. The noise may not be the nicest, but nor is a loud mower. Just as a weed expert Bill Curran at Penn State University points out, with the tool, people are freed from pulling weeds by hand.
38. Before teaching in a dance school, George .
A. served in the army
B. studied in a dancing school
C. was an owner of a dance studio
D. earned money by cutting grass
39. How long did George keep his dance studio?
A. 15 years. B. 20 years. C. Less than 14 years. D. More than 50 years.
40. Which of the following is NOT true about George’s invention?
A. It is welcomed by people.
B. It made him become a weed expert.
C. It could be used to cut grass instead of pushing a lawn mower.
D. He thought of the idea when he was washing his car.
41. We know from the last paragraph that .
A. the machine makes little noises
B. the machine can be used everywhere
C. George Ballas became famous for his invention
D. with George Ballas’ invention, people don’t need to cut grass

When I was in college, I remembered hearing about a book, Looking Out for Number One. I never read the book, because I didn’t like its title. I hadn’t been taught to be so selfish that I should be focused on only me. I thought I should help others and, along the way, I would also help myself. Now, I realize I should have at least considered learning more about looking out for number one.
Over 30 years after reading the book about looking out for number one I realize number one, me, is the person I should be concerned about first. Jeffrey Gitomer asks the question, “Who is the most important person in the world?” Most people answer, “The customer (顾客).” He then asks, “If there were only two people left in the world, the customer and you, who would you want to survive?” Now the answer is me.
It makes sense (有道理) that if we can’t help ourselves first, we will never be able to help others. We all need to learn to control our lives and make the best decisions for ourselves. That will put us in a position to help others in the future. But many of us fail to understand this.
It has been said that happiness will bring success, but success doesn’t always bring happiness. For some of us we can be very happy when our basic needs are satisfied (满意的). Others will seek for (寻求) high levels of success. I’m sure we can think of people who are very successful, according to the world’s standards, but they don’t appear to be happy at all. This is because they have been so busy working for somebody else’s goal that they haven’t considered their own needs.
42. According to the author, who is the most important person in the world now?
A. Others. B. Oneself. C. The customer. D. Jeffrey Gitomer.
43. From the third paragraph we can learn .
A. we should help others instead of ourselves
B. we should help others make best decisions
C. helping others can help control our lives
D. few of us understand the real meaning of looking out for number one
44. Why do some successful people not feel happy at all?
A. Because they don’t believe success always brings happiness.
B. Because their basic needs are not completely satisfied.
C. Because they seek for too high levels of success.
D. Because they haven’t worked for their own goals.
45. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The most important person in the world
B. How to look out for number one
C. Helping ourselves first
D. Happiness and success

As summer approaches, many kids and teenagers may find that they have more time on their hands. One great way to make use of the extra time is to go on an adventure (冒险) and travel. Clearly, I am not a naturally adventurous person, but I have found that taking the risk and challenging myself to explore and travel to unfamiliar places can be a very rewarding experience.
Because I am usually quite busy during the school year, most of my travels take place during the summer. Over the past few summers, I have hiked (徒步旅行) in the Grand Canyon, explored Niagara Falls, and camped out in upstate New York. Although these experiences are varied, they are similar in that they instill (灌输) a sense of appreciation for nature and a more balanced view on life. When I hiked in the Grand Canyon, for example, I was in awe (敬畏) of the geological influences that shaped the canyon.
Adventures, of course, are not limited to hiking. There are many other choices, such as camping, volunteering in a foreign environment, and traveling to different countries. In my opinion, adventures are more enjoyable with families or a few friends. There is a sense of bonding that one only gets through spending time together in outdoor adventures. For example, when I was in Boy Scouts, I often went on weekend camping trips with my friends. When I came back from a Boy Scouts camping trip, I often was eager to go outside more and explore the parks and nature around me.
Next fall, I will attend college. In the meantime though, I hope to make the most of my summer to explore and travel. Now, I am planning on hiking and camping out in Maine. When I visited Maine last fall, I was amazed by how beautiful it was and the tall trees and coasts that exist, and I really hope to enjoy the beauty of nature there this summer.
46. We can learn from the first paragraph that the writer ______.
A. likes traveling with his father
B. can’t take good care of himself
C. has never been to unfamiliar places
D. likes challenging himself by traveling
47. The underlined word “varied” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.
A. common B. different
C. difficult D. important
48. Which of the following can make your adventure more enjoyable?
A. Exploring the parks.
B. Going to different countries.
C. Going on weekend camping trips.
D. Traveling with your parents and friends.
49. In the coming summer, the writer will ______.
A. go to college
B. visit close friends
C. go on an adventure
D. camp out in upstate New York again
50. The writer probably is ______.
A. a friendly guide
B. a college student
C. a warm-hearted teacher
D. a middle school student

第三部分 写作(共三节,共60分)
第一节 阅读表达 (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
Many Americans say the hardest job in the world is being the president of the United States. The man who lives and works in the White House must be able to deal with problems twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Even on holidays or in the middle of the night, the president may have to make decisions that affect both people in this country and the rest of the world.
Doctors nearly always say that high levels of stress are bad for your health. So people would expect a president’s life to be shorter than average. Some people even say that being the president could make a person age two times as fast as normal. But Professor Olshansky was not persuaded. So he examined the lives of the thirty-four American presidents who died of natural causes. He found that twenty-three of them lived longer than most people born at the same time.
The average age of those thirty-four presidents when they died was seventy-three. The professor also found that the first eight presidents lived an average of seventy-nine point eight years. At that time, modern medicines had not been invented.
Four American presidents lived past ninety. John Adams, Herbert Hoover, and Ronald Reagan each lived ninety or more years. But Gerald Ford lived longer than any other presidents. He was ninety-three and a half when he died in 2006. Professor Olshansky says gray hair, hair loss and other changes of a person are part of aging. Presidents are no different from the rest of us.
But the researcher thinks there are some reasons why they outlive other people. Most presidents are well-educated. Many are wealthy when compared with other Americans. And they receive the best medical care. They know how to stay healthy, and have the best doctors. As a result, they can afford to live a healthy life long after they leave the White House.
56. What do Americans think about American Presidents? (within 14 words)

57. Why did Professor Olshansky examine the lives of the thirty-four American Presidents? (within 18 words)

58. Who is the most long-lived one among these presidents? (within 4 words)

59. Why did Professor Olshansky say presidents were no different from the rest of us? (within 18 words)

One possible version:
Recently I have done a survey about how the students in my class spent their lucky money. The results are as follows:
The survey, in which 60 students in our class were questioned, showed that two thirds of the students spent their lucky money buying books for studies. However, ten of them, especially some boys, spent the money on playing computer games and having dinners with their friends. The lucky money of the ten students, especially some girls, was spent on clothes and cosmetics.
According to the survey, most of the students can spend their money properly. As students, we should mainly spend our lucky money on studies rather than on something else. After all, money is earned through hard work by our parents.
