Bobby had tried to climb a big snowy mountain at least thirty times, but had always failed. On one occasion, he went up the mountain with old Peeper, the town optician (眼镜商), who saw his failure. Peeper always encouraged Bobby to keep trying until he succeeded. One day he even presented Bobby with a pair of special sunglasses. He said, “If it starts clouding over, put on the glasses. Or if your feet start hurting, put them on too. These are special glasses; they’ll help you.”
Bobby accepted the gift without giving it much thought. But during his next climb, when his feet started hurting, he remembered what Peeper had said and put on the glasses. The pain was severe, but with the new glasses, he could still manage to see the snow-covered summit. So he continued.
As on most instances, misfortune (灾难) returned in the form of cloud cover. But, this time, it was so light that he could still see the summit through the clouds. So, Bobby kept climbing, forgetting his pain, and finally reached the summit. His success was as wonderful as the great view below. Bobby did not remember the clouds being so thick. When he looked more closely at the sunglasses, he understood everything.
Peeper had actually engraved (雕刻) on the lenses an image in the form of the snow-covered summit. It was made in such a way that one could see it only if one looked upwards. Peeper had done this because he clearly understood that whenever Bobby lost sight of his aim, he lost sight of his dream and therefore, his resolve to persist (坚持) weakened.

There are several sayings that warn about money. “Money is the root of all evil”. “Money can’t buy you happiness”. Money may not be the answer to happiness, but it certainly helps to have some. Can you think your way to wealth and success?
In 1937, after many years of researching financial success and observing people who had become rich, Napoleon Hill published the book “Think and Grow Rich”. The book says that you must write down what you want to achieve, how and when you want to achieve it and what you are willing to do for it. Napoleon Hill said you must read that statement out loud every morning when you wake up and every evening before you go to sleep. And try your best to work to realize your dream.
It is one of the most successful books ever written. Although it was published in the middle of The Great Depression, it was a hit immediately. Forbes Magazine says it has sold seventy million copies since it first appeared and continues to sell copies today. Napoleon Hill wrote at least ten other books about success before his death. But none of them came close to selling as many copies as “Think and Grow Rich”.
Franco Arda is with SmarterComics. He is the company’s founder and publisher. Mr. Arda says he first read “Think and Grow Rich” when he was a teenager. It taught him to change the way he thinks about money and success. He has released a comic book (连环漫画册) version of this book. Do you have a child between the ages of three and eight? If you ask preschool and early primary school teachers what those children should be working on, the answer is sure to include the child’s social skills. Children do need to understand language and math, but in the early grades it is equally important that they know how to behave as part of a group. This is a key part of their social and emotional (感情的) development.
You can help your child in this area by getting him to take part in different social experiences. This may be preschool, play group, or various lessons, as well as more informal groups like parties or family get-togethers. The idea is for your child to have an opportunity to interact (一起活动) with children of the same age as well as those slightly older or younger.
Another great way to develop these skills in your children is to volunteer with them in the community. Most large cities have some sort of volunteer centers. If that’s not available, try calling your church, local libraries and other public organizations. Generally if your child is under 13, you will be expected to stay with him at the volunteer site.
Most children will occasionally experience a social disaster. Help her / him learn from the experience and move on with confidence because she or he now knows a better way to behave. Do this by talking over the experience, and discussing other ways to deal with the situation. Very few people are just naturally good in social situations. Like many other skills, it takes practice. When you provide your child with the opportunity to get that practice in a safe environment with your support, your child will surely make great progress in social skills.
36. The author wrote this passage in order to _______.
A. show us the importance of social skills
B. tell us how to develop children’s social skills
C. ask children to take part in different social experiences
D. tell us how to volunteer with children in the community
37. The author seems to place more emphasis on ________.
A. personal experiences B. social behavior
C. academic achievements D. emotional development
38. Why does the author suggest children should take part in various social activities?
A. To help them know more people.
B. To show them how to deal with social problems.
C. To let them see how other children behave in groups.
D. To provide them with chances to interact with other people.
39. If your child is less than 13 years old, parents are supposed to ______.
A. allow him to work on his own
B. listen to him with great patience
C. look after him more carefully
D. take part in voluntary activities with him
40. Who will benefit most from this passage?
A. Preschool children.
B. Preschool teachers.
C. Parents with small children.

April is National Poetry Month in the United States. The Academy of American Poets started the celebration in 1996. The goal was to help more Americans add poetry to their lives and make them more colorful.
The academy chose April as National Poetry Month because of a line in a poem. T.S. Eliot called April “the cruelest month” in his poem “The Waste Land”. He was one of the most influential poets in the 20th century. And many Americans also think April is the cruelest month. They must pay their income taxes (收入税) by April 15th.
National Poetry Month brings together publishers, booksellers, poetry groups, libraries, schools and poets around the country. They encourage people to write, read, and listen to poetry. In the southern state of Florida, the Poetry Festival tries to bring at least a poem to every one of the 2.5 million people who live in the area. The group has handed out cards with poems, printed poems on clothes, and put poems on every bus in the city.
Poetry is very popular in the United States. America even has a chief poet, known as the Poet Laureate (桂冠诗人). Robert Pinsky was the Poet Laureate from 2010 until 2012. He was forty years old when Americans began to read his poems and praise them. He started the Favorite Poem Project to find out which poems Americans liked best. Thousands of Americans wrote to Mr. Pinsky about their favorite poems every day. He chose 200 poems by poets from the United States and from many other countries in the world. The poems were included in a book called “Americans’ Favorite Poems”. It was edited by Robert Pinsky and named by Maggie Dietz.

第二节 读写任务 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据要求写一篇150词左右的短文。
I am sure that most of us love to text (发短信) or at least have done it before. Well, this world is made up of short messages and without them I am sure there would be some problems.
However, texting does bring us some troubles. The most important problem is that you cannot concentrate on what you are doing while you are texting. For example, texting while driving happens every second of the day and is the main cause of many accidents on the road these days. Another example, let’s say you were doing your homework, and you had lots of homework to do. If you have too many messages to receive or send, you won’t get your homework done in time.
Texting is fun and it will affect someone’s life if you ban yourself and others from using it. Now teens use it more than adults or parents, but all in all it’s a great way to communicate with your friends and family.
Therefore, when we are making use of texting, we should think twice before we really do it. We are supposed not to use it too much or too often so that we can concentrate on our work and also let others concentrate on their work as well.
[写作内容]
1.以约30个词概括短文的主要内容。
2.以约120个词谈一谈你对发短信的看法。内容包括如下要点:
1) 短信在人们生活中的重要性;
2) 短信给人们生活带来的烦恼(如垃圾短信);
3) 我们在发短信时应注意些什么。
[写作要求]
1. 你可以参照阅读材料的内容,但不得直接引用原文中的句子。
2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。

基础写作
Attention, please! I’m going to give you a summary of today’s discussion about whether we should go online in our spare time.
Some think we have the right to go online in our spare time because the spare time belongs to us. Through the Internet, we can not only look up some information about our school subjects but also gain a lot of the latest news at home and abroad.
However, most of our classmates partly agree to this idea, thinking that going online is part of our daily life but they suggest a time limit. They’ve found more classmates are playing online games and chatting instead of concentrating on their lessons and that even a few of them cut class because of the addiction to online games.
I think we should make use of the Internet wisely and properly in our spare time to make it serve our studies better.
That’s all. Thank you for your listening!
读写任务
Texting may make us unable to concentrate on our work and lead to accidents. However, we would have much trouble without using it. Therefore, the author advises us not to send too many short messages.
It goes without saying that texting is important in our daily life. We used to write to each other to keep connected. However, we have got the access to texting since we began to use mobile phones. Besides, we don’t have to spend much money on short messages. Therefore, the number of messages is going up very quickly from that moment on.
However, we have experienced quite a lot of disadvantages so far. We frequently receive messages which are known as rubbish messages. These messages sometimes bring too much inconvenience to us. Therefore, we are supposed to send a certain amount of messages. Besides, the government should try to ban rubbish messages so that we won’t be troubled by them.
