One day, cowardly (胆小的) Jimmy asked a master to teach him bravery. The master said, “I won’t teach you unless you do this: go and live in a big city for a month. You should openly and loudly tell those who pass by that you are a coward.”
For several days he was very sad and in deep thought because this task seemed scary (可怕的) to him. But to live with his cowardice was so unbearable (不堪忍受的) that he decided to do it.
At first, he was afraid and couldn’t speak to anyone. When he came up to his first passer-by to tell about his cowardice, it seemed that he would die from fear. But each time his voice sounded louder and more confident. And then a moment came, when Jimmy realized that he was not scared any more. The further he continued doing the task, the more he believed that he was not scared any more. After a month, he came back to the master and said, “Thank you. Now I’m not scared any more. How did you know that this strange task will help me?”
“The thing is”, the master said, smiling, “that cowardice is only a habit. And by doing the things that scare us, we can destroy the old habit and form a new one. And now you know that bravery is the same habit. And to make it a part of yourself, you need to move forward into the fear. And then the fear will be gone, and bravery will take its place.”

A man who suffered concussion (脑震荡) after diving into a pool has made an impossible discovery: it made him able to play the piano. Derek Amato, from Denver, Colorado, is just one of the few people around the world suffering from acquired savant syndrome (后天性学者综合征), where people show amazing abilities after suffering head injuries.
After years of failed jobs and homelessness, the 40-year-old is now enjoying a career in music and can play the piano although he never had a piano lesson in his life. Amato, who can not read music, explained that he knew what to play as he could see black and white squares in his head that caused his fingers to move. “That’s my notation (乐谱),” he said.
Last October, he was partying with friends when he jumped into a pool and hit his head. He said, “I remembered coming up out of the water and shouting that my ears were bleeding. As I looked to my friends for explanation, I saw their lips moving but without sound.” Amato was sent to hospital and doctors found he had a serious concussion, a 35 percent loss of hearing, as well as memory loss. But Amato thinks this is a small price to pay for what he can do now. He said, “The headaches and the loss of hearing are the price for this gift, and I’d like it to stay.”
While research into the cause of acquired savant syndrome is ongoing, there is no theory explaining all savants. Many researchers believe that acquired savant syndrome may occur when the right brain compensates (补偿) for an injury on the left brain. It is extremely rare for a savant to lose their skills after they have got them.
46. What do we know about Amato?
A. Diving used to be his favorite sport.
B. He knew his musical talent before the accident.
C. He didn’t receive any musical education before.
D. His musical skills were improved after the head injury.

A. His headache. B. A slow loss of sight.
C. Some loss of hearing. D. His memory loss.
49. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Savant syndrome does no harm to people’s health.
B. Amato’s musical skills will disappear when he recovers.
C. Acquired savant syndrome may solve some brain problems.

We’ve all made mistakes, and we’ll continue to do so for as long as we live. Making mistakes is part of being human. Still, we’re often troubled by our mistakes. Why do we have such a hard time admitting (承认) mistakes? Actually, making mistakes is nothing to worry about, and the key is to accept the mistakes and recover from them quickly.
When you make mistakes, take some action at once. The sooner you deal with the problem, the quicker you can solve it. And you’ll feel better right away. If you don’t act quickly, it’ll only make you feel more stressed, and the problem could get bigger with the passing of time. Also it’s necessary to develop a plan of action to fix the mistake because every situation is different. So decide quickly what steps you can take to solve things and then act!
Making mistakes is the best way we learn. Man learns mainly through making mistakes. We should give an A to the students who have made the most mistakes, for they’re the ones who have learned the most. By making mistakes, we become cleverer.
And lastly, think about what you can learn from your mistakes. Why did you make the mistake and how do you not make the same mistake again in the future? When you think about it, you’re learning something new. You try a technique and you get a result. If it’s the result you want, make sure you do it that way every time. If it isn’t the result you want, then adjust (调整) it and try it again.
So, don’t be afraid of making mistakes! It is only when you have made enough mistakes that you can be called an expert.

My friend Brett had just gotten a bike. A lot of kids in my neighborhood knew how to ride. I wanted to also. All the boys told me I couldn’t do it because I was a girl. I was determined to prove them wrong, so Brett let me try his bike. I wasn’t on for one minute before I fell off. He came over to see if I was OK, but then started laughing.
That night I told my dad the whole story about how I wanted to be as good as boys. A few days later my dad told me he had found a nice bike. He brought it home and that was when I became the laughing stock of the neighborhood. All the boys thought it was a joke that I actually wanted to learn how to ride.
My dad spent four long weeks teaching me everything I needed to know about the bike and the basics of riding. Day after day and night after night he worked with me, and I began to progress.
Each ride on my dirt bike, I got a little better, and finally I was ready for my first time on the trails. At first I couldn’t keep up and the boys had to wait for me. My bike constantly got stuck in the muddy creeks.
Every time I came back, I would cry, and every time I cried my dad was there to put his arms around me. He would tell me not to listen to them and that with more practice, I would be as good as others or better than them.

Almost every kid in this country has eaten a Hershey chocolate bar. Hershey chocolate has become famous around the world.
Milton Hershey grew up in the rolling farm country of Pennsylvania. Milton Hershey first trained to become a printer. He worked for a small newspaper at first, and then decided that printing was not the right job for him.
Then he got a job at a candy factory in Pennsylvania. After working a few years, he decided to open his own candy business. His first business had to close down because it was not making money. After closing down his first business, he traveled to Denver, Colorado to learn how to make caramels (焦糖).
He took his new skills back to New York and worked selling candies in the street. But this second business also failed.
Finally, Milton Hershey moved back to the farm hills where he grew up. He then experimented with all sorts of different candies and chocolates. The area where he lived had lots of dairy farms, so he had a large and easy supply of fresh milk.

By experimenting, Milton Hershey discovered how to make delicious chocolate by using fresh sweet condensed (浓缩的) milk. His milk chocolates were so popular that he sold his caramel factory and focused his business on making chocolate only.
In 1903, Milton Hershey built a huge chocolate factory and an entire town to go with it. The town of Hershey, Pennsylvania had a streetcar line, schools, libraries, a sports arena, a community center and a special school for needy children.

One reason parents may not be up in arms about the lack of PE classes in school is that many of them didn’t get much out of PE classes when they were kids. If you didn’t do well in the fitness test every year, and if you didn’t have a talent for fielding balls or using the gymnastics equipment, PE classes were mostly an experience that will hurt your self-confidence. In games such as dodge ball (躲球游戏), where the least-skilled aren’t included, only the athletically gifted got the playing time.
The male-centered, competitive way has been especially difficult for girls, because many of them enjoy doing cooperative activities more.
There’s also little “physical” in too many of today’s physical education classes. Kids in PE classes should be active for at least 50 percent of the time. Researchers have found, however, that kids take part in energetic activity for only a few minutes in a typical class. The rest of the time is spent standing around while the teacher takes attendance, or waiting for a turn to shoot a basket or hit a ball.
PE classes in many of today’s schools are taught the same as it was in the 1950s. Fortunately, PE reformers (改革家) have created new programs that are being tried in a few schools. The emphasis (重点) is not on competition but on helping kids build skills and develop an interest in some activities they will enjoy doing on their own. In the new-style PE classes, games are designed to pay less attention to competition and replace (取代) it with cooperation.

Reading groups are created by people who gather to talk with each other about their opinions on books they have read. These groups can be as small as four friends to as large a classroom full of book lovers. All have some kind of structure. Usually, there is a leader and a set of rules for moderating the discussion. The leader guides the conversation, helps the group keep time and allows everyone to have a chance to speak. Also the leader is in charge of making the group guidelines (指导方针) and deciding on the meeting place.
A reading group is a place where one can be aware of recent events and authors, and read about different cultures and societies. Reading various books leads to a broadening of thinking and makes the person more open to different ideas. What’s more, by meeting in a reading group regularly, one can stay away from the routine (日常的) life even for a short time. This gives one much break from everyday experiences. The best part is that one feels safe in the group and the sense of belonging is created.
A reading club is also the right place to enjoy the rewards an interesting book can give. One can learn about recently-released (最近出版的) books, and hear opinions before choosing new books. At the same time, the chance to meet new people with fresh views helps one to encourage the growth of one’s mind. One ends up making friends with people of similar interests.
In a word, joining a reading group is really good, so one is supposed to join one.
