“Don’t worry! Lots of kids have moved here and made new friends,” my new teacher told me. “Oh, and don’t be concerned about your braces (矫正器). Almost everyone has them here.”
Even my new teacher thought I was a nerd (弱者), and he hadn’t even known me for five minutes. If my teacher thought that, I couldn’t imagine what the rest of class were going to think.
I wondered what kind of speech he gave them about me, “The new girl.” He probably made it sound like I was a nerd whose dad just died and everyone should be nice to me.
I wish I was back with my friends at my old school, where everyone knew me.
The bell rang, and the class poured in. Maybe if I didn’t move, they wouldn’t see me. Oh, well, it was a nice try. Everyone looked at me as if I were some kind of alien (外星人).
At that moment, a beautiful girl walked in and said with a sweet smile, “Hi, my name is Alicia.”
“Um, I’m Annie,” I said.
She made a face and said, “Hi, Annie. You can sit with us at lunch today if you want.”
“Maybe this new school wouldn’t be so bad after all,” I thought.

My daughter Jersey is a single parent. She works hard to provide for herself and her three young sons. She manages to plan for everything carefully.
When her eldest son, David, wanted a bicycle so that he could do a part-time job, the family saved up and soon he was the proud owner of a good second-hand bicycle. One afternoon my daughter asked David to go to the local shop to buy something. He rode his bicycle, but foolishly left it outside the shop without putting on the lock. When David came out of the shop, it was gone. He walked home in tears and then, together with his exasperated mother, went to the local police station.
Imagine their joy when they arrived at the station: David’s bike was there. The driver told my daughter how he’d seen a group of kids go for the bike once my grandson had gone inside the shop. The driver, in his late teens, had called out to them to leave the bike alone. Despite this, one of the kids in the group had jumped on the bicycle and ridden it away while the others followed.
The teen got into his car, drove after them and demanded the stolen bike back. He was happy to be able to return it to my grandson together with a lecture about the folly of failing to use the bike lock. Then, in all the excitement, he walked away without even giving his name or telephone number.

This summer my family decided to take our vacation where the sun shines 24 hours a day! We went to Iceland. Although it sounds far away, it was actually only about 5 hours by plane from New York City.
Day 1
Today we walked around the capital city of Iceland. Reykjavik is a European city filled with lots of history, shopping, and good restaurants. One famous place in Reykjavik is the big church in the city center. The famous film Die Another Day was shot here in 2002.
Day 2
We took the bus to go through the beautiful National Park, and then we went to Golden Waterfall in the highlands and the geysers (间歇泉).
There were several active geysers that we were able to stand right near. The geysers threw up hot water every ten minutes and it was a sight to see. Hot water from the geysers is one of Iceland’s greatest treasures. Not only is it used to heat houses and produce electricity (电) but it is also wonderful to just sit in it.
We also went to see several waterfalls and were even able to walk behind one of the waterfalls. It is unusual to be able to touch a waterfall in nature. It was a very exciting day.
Day 3
Tired and exhausted from all the excitement of this wonderful country, we took a taxi to the airport. Goodbye, Iceland. I am really looking forward to our return.
43. What do we know about the capital city of Iceland?
A. It’s a new European city. B. It’s a good place to visit.

C. went to Iceland by plane but returned by taxi
D. decided not to take a vacation once again in Iceland

I turned away from the piano. After an hour of practicing, I still couldn’t play Mozart’s piece well. It was frustrating to have spent such a long time on a piano song and still be unable to play the piece well. To me, the piece had at first seemed very easy, but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t play it correctly.
I decided to take a break, and come back to the piece later. For the most part, after a little bit of work, I could usually learn the song quickly. However, it was always that song, which might have appeared simple but was difficult. These types of songs always made me upset.
After having dinner, I decided to come back to the piano. I chose to play the piece slowly and carefully, paying attention to the correct notes instead of trying to play the piece quickly. Using this new method of practicing, I focused on how I could improve myself little by little.
I didn’t even get the rhythm (节奏) right until a week later. But I learned an important lesson — sometimes, baby steps are really important. I’m the person who likes to do things quickly. But in the case of the piano, I couldn’t move forward and improve until I slowed down, and took one step at a time.
47. The writer at first thought that playing Mozart’s piece .
A. would be rather difficult B. might waste a lot of time
C. needed much practice D. was really a piece of cake
48. What do we know about the writer from the third paragraph?
A. She had difficulty in reading the notes.
B. She changed her attitude towards playing the piano.
C. She liked to play a piece of music slowly.
D. She paid attention to improving herself in the past.
49. The writer finally improved herself by .
A. reading the notes carefully B. choosing to play a simple piece
C. practicing the piano in a slow way
D. asking her teacher for help
50. What did the writer learn at last?
A. Teachers are important to pianists.
B. Calm down or you can’t enjoy Mozart’s piece.
C. Playing the piano needs a lot of practice.
D. Go step by step and you will succeed.

If being a member of a school club is good, then starting your own school club is even better. Starting and running a successful school club will help you make more friends and develop your leadership skills. However, starting a successful club isn’t easy. To succeed, you need to work hard.
To make a successful school club, firstly, you need to ask your teacher whether there’s a formal approval process (审批手续) for clubs at your school. If there’s one, ask which forms you need to have a club approved. Then fill out the approval forms for your club, and turn in the forms to your school’s secretary.
After that, advertise your club. State the name of your club at the top of the poster, state the location, date and time on the bottom of the poster and also describe briefly why you want to start the club. Then put the poster up around your school.
Talk to people who you know, and ask them to join the club. Also you can ask them to spread the word by telling their friends. For example, your friend, Jack, doesn’t want to join your violin club, but he has a friend, Violet, who loves the violin. Then you can ask Jack to tell Violet about the club.
Make a clear plan for the first day and future activities. You can manage the activities of the club by holding meetings in a regular way. But you should plan meetings at a time that all the members can attend. If you need to cancel (取消) a meeting, tell the members as soon as you can. Otherwise they may see the club as not being serious and give up attending events and meetings.

三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
When I was a boy, we had several gardens around our old house. The largest one of all was used just for growing potatoes.
I can still remember those potato planting days. The whole family helped. After my dad had tilled (耕) the soil, my mom, brothers, and I went to work. It was my job to drop the seed potatoes in the rows while my mom dropped handfuls of fertilizer (肥料) beside them. My brothers then covered them all with the freshly turned soil.
For months afterward I would go to see the garden often while I played outside and wonder what was going on underneath the ground. When the harvest time came I was amazed at the potatoes my Dad pulled out of the soil. They would be turned into meal after meal of baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, fried potatoes, and my favorite: potatoes cooked in spaghetti sauce. They would keep the entire family well fed throughout the year. It truly was a miracle (奇迹).
Every single day of our lives, we step out into the garden of this world. Every single day, we plant seeds that can grow into something wonderful. We may never see the growth that comes from these kind words or loving acts we share but there is always someone who will see. I hope then that you always take care of the garden around you. I hope that you plant only goodness, peace, and compassion (同情) in the lives of everyone you meet. I hope that every day you help miracles to grow.

If man’s best friend is a dog, then who is a dog’s best friend? That would be Rover, Glow, Ivan, or Raina. They recently donated (捐赠) blood to other dogs. And they did it without having to travel far from home: they visited an animal bloodmobile.
Like the Red Cross vehicles for humans, the University of Pennsylvania’s traveling vet lab goes to where the donors are to make it easier to give. The bloodmobile makes weekly rounds through Philadelphia and New Jersey.
Like humans, not every dog is qualified (合格的) to donate blood. The dogs are examined for health first. Dogs must have the correct blood type, weigh at least 55 pounds and be under 8 years old. About 150 dogs take part in the program. Each donates three or four pints (品脱) a year, which can help animals suffering from illnesses like cancer or an accident like being hit by a car.
Sandy Lucas brought her 7-year-old dog, Raina, to the bloodmobile last week. She said she wouldn’t have taken the dog to Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia, which is twice as far from her home. “I was very, very excited that she had the right blood that was needed to help another dog out,” said Lucas. “We’ll surely do it again.”
Just like people, the donors get a snack and a heart-shaped sticker immediately after giving. What’s more, they receive dog food to take home.
If dogs are doing what they can to save other dogs, why can’t we do it to save other people? Next time you hesitate (犹豫) over whether to donate blood or not, think of the dogs.
43. The writer mentions Rover, Glow, Ivan and Raina in Para. 1 mainly because _____.
A. they are man’s best friends B. they are common names for dogs
C. they get along well with other dogs D. they have donated blood to other dogs
44. What do we know about the traveling vet lab?
A. It is a Red Cross vehicle.
B. It collects dogs’ blood for other dogs.
C. It travels through Philadelphia every day.
D. It was donated by the University of Pennsylvania.
45. What can we learn from Para. 4?
A. Sandy Lucas is unwilling to let her dog donate blood.
B. The bloodmobile welcomes dogs from anywhere in the city.
C. Penn Vet’s animal hospital in downtown Philadelphia is popular.
D. The animal bloodmobile has made it easier for dogs to donate blood.
46. By writing the last paragraph, the author wants to _____.
A. ask us to help dogs B. show the importance of dogs
C. encourage us to donate blood D. compare humans with dogs
D
Rosa Parks, called the mother of the American Civil Rights Movement, was born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. She attended local schools until she was eleven years old. Then she was sent to a school in Montgomery. She left high school early to care for her sick grandmother, then to care for her mother. She did not finish high school until she was twenty-one.
In much of the American South in the 1950s, the first rows of seats on city buses were for white people only. Black people sat in the back of the bus. Both groups could sit in the middle area. However, black people sitting in the middle area were expected to leave their seats if a white person wanted to sit there.
Rosa Parks and three other black people were seated in the middle area of a bus when a white person got on the bus and wanted a seat. The bus driver ordered all four black people to leave their seats so the white person would not have to sit next to any of them. The three other blacks got up, but Rosa Parks refused. Before this two black women also refused to leave their seats and they were arrested (拘留). So was Rosa Parks. Some stories about this included the statement that Rosa Parks refused to get up because her feet were tired. But what she was really tired of, she said, was accepting unequal treatment.
After Rosa Parks was arrested, blacks in Montgomery began to boycott (抵制) the city buses. The boycott continued for 381 days and ended the day after the Supreme Court of the United States declared (宣布) that racial separation was illegal (违法的) on city buses.
47. From the first paragraph we can learn that Rosa Parks _____.
A. had a poor childhood B. was helpful and determined

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Some days just don’t seem to go right. Maybe you get into an argument with others, or perhaps your work goes badly. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: you end up feeling bored, stressed out and unhappy. It’s bad to feel unhappy all day long so we need to improve a bad day.
You can improve a bad day by doing something just for you. For example, go out for a coffee, or play a video game for an hour. In fact, “me time” is a good idea. Having the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate (恢复体力) makes it easier to brush off little things that go badly in the course of your day.
A sense of achievement and progress can do a lot to improve a bad day. Thus, you can look for a few quick and easy wins. For example, make the phone call you’ve been putting off. Sort out (分类) that pile of papers. See how many five-minute tasks you can knock off your list. You’ll feel much better once you get them done.
Also talking to someone you love can really lift your mood. If it’s not practical to speak to someone, how about sending a quick email or text to say “I love you” or to let them know you’re thinking of them? Not only will you feel better, you might improve their day too.
Whatever’s gone wrong, there’s almost certainly some good to be found in it. Perhaps you made a mistake at work — at least next time, you’ll be more likely to watch out for that particular problem. Of course, it can be hard to look on the bright side, but if you make it a habit, you’ll find it easier to recover from things that go badly.
