“Don’t worry! Lots of kids have moved here and made new friends,” my new teacher told me. “Oh, and don’t be concerned about your braces (矫正器). Almost everyone has them here.”
Even my new teacher thought I was a nerd (弱者), and he hadn’t even known me for five minutes. If my teacher thought that, I couldn’t imagine what the rest of class were going to think.
I wondered what kind of speech he gave them about me, “The new girl.” He probably made it sound like I was a nerd whose dad just died and everyone should be nice to me.
I wish I was back with my friends at my old school, where everyone knew me.
The bell rang, and the class poured in. Maybe if I didn’t move, they wouldn’t see me. Oh, well, it was a nice try. Everyone looked at me as if I were some kind of alien (外星人).
At that moment, a beautiful girl walked in and said with a sweet smile, “Hi, my name is Alicia.”
“Um, I’m Annie,” I said.
She made a face and said, “Hi, Annie. You can sit with us at lunch today if you want.”
“Maybe this new school wouldn’t be so bad after all,” I thought.

My daughter Jersey is a single parent. She works hard to provide for herself and her three young sons. She manages to plan for everything carefully.
When her eldest son, David, wanted a bicycle so that he could do a part-time job, the family saved up and soon he was the proud owner of a good second-hand bicycle. One afternoon my daughter asked David to go to the local shop to buy something. He rode his bicycle, but foolishly left it outside the shop without putting on the lock. When David came out of the shop, it was gone. He walked home in tears and then, together with his exasperated mother, went to the local police station.
Imagine their joy when they arrived at the station: David’s bike was there. The driver told my daughter how he’d seen a group of kids go for the bike once my grandson had gone inside the shop. The driver, in his late teens, had called out to them to leave the bike alone. Despite this, one of the kids in the group had jumped on the bicycle and ridden it away while the others followed.
The teen got into his car, drove after them and demanded the stolen bike back. He was happy to be able to return it to my grandson together with a lecture about the folly of failing to use the bike lock. Then, in all the excitement, he walked away without even giving his name or telephone number.

This summer my family decided to take our vacation where the sun shines 24 hours a day! We went to Iceland. Although it sounds far away, it was actually only about 5 hours by plane from New York City.
Day 1
Today we walked around the capital city of Iceland. Reykjavik is a European city filled with lots of history, shopping, and good restaurants. One famous place in Reykjavik is the big church in the city center. The famous film Die Another Day was shot here in 2002.
Day 2
We took the bus to go through the beautiful National Park, and then we went to Golden Waterfall in the highlands and the geysers (间歇泉).
There were several active geysers that we were able to stand right near. The geysers threw up hot water every ten minutes and it was a sight to see. Hot water from the geysers is one of Iceland’s greatest treasures. Not only is it used to heat houses and produce electricity (电) but it is also wonderful to just sit in it.
We also went to see several waterfalls and were even able to walk behind one of the waterfalls. It is unusual to be able to touch a waterfall in nature. It was a very exciting day.
Day 3
Tired and exhausted from all the excitement of this wonderful country, we took a taxi to the airport. Goodbye, Iceland. I am really looking forward to our return.

I turned away from the piano. After an hour of practicing, I still couldn’t play Mozart’s piece well. It was frustrating to have spent such a long time on a piano song and still be unable to play the piece well. To me, the piece had at first seemed very easy, but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t play it correctly.
I decided to take a break, and come back to the piece later. For the most part, after a little bit of work, I could usually learn the song quickly. However, it was always that song, which might have appeared simple but was difficult. These types of songs always made me upset.
After having dinner, I decided to come back to the piano. I chose to play the piece slowly and carefully, paying attention to the correct notes instead of trying to play the piece quickly. Using this new method of practicing, I focused on how I could improve myself little by little.
I didn’t even get the rhythm (节奏) right until a week later. But I learned an important lesson — sometimes, baby steps are really important. I’m the person who likes to do things quickly. But in the case of the piano, I couldn’t move forward and improve until I slowed down, and took one step at a time.
12. The writer at first thought that playing Mozart’s piece .
A. would be rather difficult B. might waste a lot of time
C. needed much practice D. was really a piece of cake

B. She changed her attitude towards playing the piano.
C. She liked to play a piece of music slowly.
D. She paid attention to improving herself in the past.
14. The writer finally improved herself by .
A. reading the notes carefully
B. choosing to play a simple piece
C. practicing the piano in a slow way
D. asking her teacher for help
15. What did the writer learn at last?
A. Teachers are important to pianists.
B. Calm down or you can’t enjoy Mozart’s piece.
C. Playing the piano needs a lot of practice.
D. Go step by step and you will succeed.

One day, my parents went for a party and my brother and I were alone in our apartment. We were watching television. Suddenly the doorbell rang. 16
He opened the door and outside stood a tall man. He said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home. 17 He asked if we would like to buy some storybooks and I quickly refused.
I was about to close the door when he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope (绳子) which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself. 18
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for money. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside and I did not have the keys. 19 My brother managed to get out of the house through the window and asked a neighbor to call 911.

This is a true story of a mother’s sacrifice (牺牲) in an earthquake.
When the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman’s house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. Her pose was somehow strange — she knelt (跪) on the ground like a person who was worshiping (祷告); her body was leaning forward, and her two hands were supported by an object. However, the cold and stiff body told them that she had passed away for sure.
The rescuers left this house and were going to search the next collapsed building. For some reason, the team leader was driven by a strong force to go back to the ruined house. Again, he knelt down to search the little space under the dead body. Suddenly, he screamed with excitement, “A child! There is a child!”
The whole team worked together; carefully they removed the piles of ruined objects around the dead woman. There was a 3-month-old little boy wrapped in a blanket under his mother’s dead body. Obviously, the woman had made great sacrifice in order to save her son. When her house was falling, she used her body to make a cover to protect her son. The little boy was still sleeping peacefully when the team leader picked him up.
A doctor came quickly to examine the little boy. After he opened the blanket, he saw a cellphone inside the blanket. There was a text message on the screen. It said, “If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.” Everybody that read the message cried.

What kind of pets do people have in your country? Dogs? Cats? How about a duck, hippo or lion? Here are two cases of animal owners with unusual pets.
Barrie Hayman has a pet duck called Star. Barrie adopted (领养) him after his brothers and sisters stayed away from him at birth. Barrie, a duck breeder, realized the little duck needed special attention. So he began taking Star with him everywhere he went. “I would put him in my pocket while I did my shopping,” said Barrie. Now, at five months, Star is too big for Barrie’s pocket, but the two are still inseparable. They watch sports together and even share a drink together. Barrie said, “He is one fantastic duck. I’ve never known any like him.” Star even has his own Facebook page, with more than 2,000 Facebook friends.
Then there’s the case of Tonie and Shirley Joubert in South Africa. They live with their pet hippo, Jessica. Tonie saved Jessica from floodwaters when she was only a day old. Jessica lives outside their riverside house, but she knows how to open the kitchen door, and often goes there for a snack. Tonie recently said, “I don’t know whether Jessica sees me as a hippo or whether she sees herself as a human.” Shirley is more certain, “Jessica sees herself as our child and I see Jessica as my daughter. I can’t imagine my life without Jessica.” Jessica is free to leave, and often visits wild hippos that live nearby. But she always returns home at night. Jessica’s website notes that she has three hippo boyfriends, but one in particular, Fred, is her favorite. They often go grazing (吃青草) together and Fred has recently moved onto the Jouberts’ house as well.

It just may be the world’s most costly vacuum cleaner (吸尘器). The price of CleanSpace One is eleven million dollars. But yet, it has a big job to do. Recently, researchers in Switzerland said they planned to build this new cleaning machine.
CleanSpace One will not be for use in homes or businesses. It will be shot into space to help remove thousands of pieces of space junk floating around up there.
Last year, we reported on the problem of space junk. Over time, many unused spacecraft have hit each other far above the Earth. Big pieces break into thousands of small pieces. Sometimes they fall back into the atmosphere (大气层) and burn up. But when they do not, it creates big problems.
Scientists fear that if something is not done to remove these objects, it may soon become too dangerous to send people and machines into space. There is a large chance that they might hit some of this junk. So that is why the Swiss researchers are developing the new machine.
CleanSpace One is not really a vacuum cleaner. It will not be used to take away space junk. But scientists plan to move it close to an old satellite that is no longer being used. Then a claw-like instrument will catch the satellite, and force it back through the atmosphere. There, the satellite will be destroyed by the heat of friction (摩擦) with the air.
Researchers say that all they need to do is slow down the speed of some of these unwanted objects. Once they begin to move more slowly, they will fall back to the Earth. There is little chance that they will fall through the atmosphere and harm the people or things below.
