A man who suffered concussion (脑震荡) after diving into a pool has made an impossible discovery: it made him able to play the piano. Derek Amato, from Denver, Colorado, is just one of the few people around the world suffering from acquired savant syndrome (后天性学者综合征), where people show amazing abilities after suffering head injuries.
After years of failed jobs and homelessness, the 40-year-old is now enjoying a career in music and can play the piano although he never had a piano lesson in his life. Amato, who can not read music, explained that he knew what to play as he could see black and white squares in his head that caused his fingers to move. “That’s my notation (乐谱),” he said.
Last October, he was partying with friends when he jumped into a pool and hit his head. He said, “I remembered coming up out of the water and shouting that my ears were bleeding. As I looked to my friends for explanation, I saw their lips moving but without sound.” Amato was sent to hospital and doctors found he had a serious concussion, a 35 percent loss of hearing, as well as memory loss. But Amato thinks this is a small price to pay for what he can do now. He said, “The headaches and the loss of hearing are the price for this gift, and I’d like it to stay.”
While research into the cause of acquired savant syndrome is ongoing, there is no theory explaining all savants. Many researchers believe that acquired savant syndrome may occur when the right brain compensates (补偿) for an injury on the left brain. It is extremely rare for a savant to lose their skills after they have got them.
46. What do we know about Amato?
A. Diving used to be his favorite sport.
B. He knew his musical talent before the accident.
C. He didn’t receive any musical education before.
D. His musical skills were improved after the head injury.
47. When Amato plays the piano, he _____.
A. reads music in an unusual way
B. doesn’t know what his hands are doing
C. must have a special notation written by himself
D. imagines the movements of his fingers in his head
48. Which of the following was NOT one of the results of Amato’s accident?
A. His headache. B. A slow loss of sight.
C. Some loss of hearing. D. His memory loss.
49. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Savant syndrome does no harm to people’s health.
B. Amato’s musical skills will disappear when he recovers.
C. Acquired savant syndrome may solve some brain problems.
D. Scientists haven’t found the exact cause of savant syndrome.
50. By saying the underlined sentence, Amato wanted to express that _____.
A. it was a pity for him to suffer headaches and the loss of hearing
B. people with a brain injury are more likely to get amazing abilities
C. savant syndrome was what other people look forward to having

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
Imagine a group of 100 girls. How many think they’re beautiful or pretty? Only 41% of them, according to the result of our recent survey of 11,500 girls.
What about the other girls? Of the rest, 19% said they weren’t pretty, and another 40% said they weren’t sure. The result of our survey also showed that more than half of girls worry about their weight and say they spend much time thinking about the way they look.
That’s a problem and here are some reasons. When girls don’t feel attractive, they often don’t feel good about themselves in general. It means they are likely to have a bad day. Of course, that happens. But, for you, if you only have bad thoughts and feelings about the way you look, you might not feel very important. But actually you’re surely important.
Then how can this problem be dealt with? Well, if you feel stressed to be pretty or thin, talk to someone and share your problem. Your mom is a good choice. Take great care of yourself by eating well, exercising and getting enough sleep. You’ll feel great!
What’s more, do your best to feel good about how you look. Of course, it’s not as beautiful as the magazine-cover beauty. When you hold yourself to impossible standards (标准), it will only put too much stress on being perfect. Instead, enjoy your looks. Then how you look won’t take up so much space in your brain and you can work on other more interesting things, such as music or reading. Most girls in our survey agree this is a good idea. They said they’d choose “being really good at something” over “being pretty and thin”.
So I suggest that you should put your energy into something you are interested in and struggle for it. Then, in time, you’ll achieve many things and you’ll feel great about yourself.

Soon, one after another, the homeless animals came to his door, asking if they could spend the winter with him in his house. He invited each visitor in, and gradually the house filled up until there was no room left. This discomfort didn’t bother the rabbit, because he felt he was being generous.

Every time I came back, I would cry, and every time I cried my dad was there to put his arms around me. He would tell me not to listen to them and that with more practice, I would be as good as others or better than them.

One reason parents may not be up in arms about the lack of PE classes in school is that many of them didn’t get much out of PE classes when they were kids. If you didn’t do well in the fitness test every year, and if you didn’t have a talent for fielding balls or using the gymnastics equipment, PE classes were mostly an experience that will hurt your self-confidence. In games such as dodge ball (躲球游戏), where the least-skilled aren’t included, only the athletically gifted got the playing time.
The male-centered, competitive way has been especially difficult for girls, because many of them enjoy doing cooperative activities more.
There’s also little “physical” in too many of today’s physical education classes. Kids in PE classes should be active for at least 50 percent of the time. Researchers have found, however, that kids take part in energetic activity for only a few minutes in a typical class. The rest of the time is spent standing around while the teacher takes attendance, or waiting for a turn to shoot a basket or hit a ball.
PE classes in many of today’s schools are taught the same as it was in the 1950s. Fortunately, PE reformers (改革家) have created new programs that are being tried in a few schools. The emphasis (重点) is not on competition but on helping kids build skills and develop an interest in some activities they will enjoy doing on their own. In the new-style PE classes, games are designed to pay less attention to competition and replace (取代) it with cooperation.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
In our daily life, we sometimes need to persuade (说服) others. And we can see there are some people who are able to persuade others with no problem. We need to learn a lot from those people who are good at persuading and this article is of help to you.
Get ready before you try to persuade others. Think more about what you will tell him or her. Prepare answers to questions he or she may ask. Think about when it is the best time to talk with them. And decide where you are going to carry out your plan. The more you have prepared, the better the result will be.
Put yourself in the position of others. You need to think of the other person’s situation first. How will your idea affect them? You need to see what they will get from your idea. Do not persuade others by telling them how you will benefit. Usually people are interested in ideas which can bring them good and happiness.
Be patient. People take time before they are persuaded to accept other’s way of thinking. It may be a day, a week, or a month. Talk with them in a friendly way and let them feel that you are doing something that is good for them. Don’t ask them to give you an answer immediately, because they need time to think about your idea. So persuading others requires a long conversation and we must have enough patience.
