少年时在家乡潜心读书、画画，青年时期到京城汴梁游学，后因画艺精湛得徽宗赏识，于北宋崇宁元年经考试被选入翰林图画院，成为宫廷画家。张择端绘画长于楼阁建筑、舟车桥梁、市井风情，善于构筑宏大的场景与复杂多变的构图，手法写实精细，有很高的艺术成就。后以失位家居，卖画为生，写有《西湖争标图》《清明上河图》。
中国十大传世名画之一，北宋画家张择端仅见的存世精品，现藏于北京故宫博物院。清明上河图宽24.8厘米、长528.7厘米。作品以长卷形式，采用散点透视构图法，生动记录了中国十二世纪北宋都城汴京的城市面貌和当时社会各阶层人民的生活状况，但在商业繁荣的表面之下暗藏玄机，明线下交织着一条令人心悸的暗线，同时又是一幅带有忧患意识的"盛世危图"。
