Smartphones, iPads and computers are keeping children and teenagers awake at night — even when they’re not in use, according to a new research. The researchers say that technology devices (设备) are causing kids to sleep less and influencing the quality (质量) of their sleep. As a result, they can have trouble staying awake the next day.
After studying children and teenagers aged 6 to 19, the researchers found a strong connection between the use of technology at bedtime and poor sleeping. The reason is not just that kids are staying up too late with their devices. Using a computer can overstimulate (过度刺激) the mind and emotions (情绪), the researchers say. A smartphone or an iPad also sends out a light that influences the body’s natural timing. All these can lead to poor sleep quality. And many kids could be at risk. According to the research, 72% of all children and 89% of teenagers have at least one device in their sleep environment. Most of these devices are used near bedtime.
Many kids get less sleep on school nights than they should. According to the National Sleep Foundation, kids aged 6 to 13 should get between nine and eleven hours of sleep a night. Getting enough sleep is especially important for learning subjects like math and foreign languages.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises kids to stop looking at screens at least half an hour before bedtime. This helps their brains slow down and gets their bodies ready for sleep. The AAP says bedrooms should be “screen-free”.
If you can’t help picking up a technology device at bedtime, try these relaxing activities instead:
Keep a diary: Writing your thoughts on paper can clear your mind.
Try a mind exercise: Close your eyes and count backward from 100 to 1.
Just relax: Breathe in and out slowly and deeply. Sweet dreams!

An unpleasant habit of announcing the death of a celebrity has sprung in recent years, when in fact the subject is alive and well. The latest blatantly false was the supposed death of Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan from a heart attack.
It spread rapidly on the Chinese blogosphere and Twitter in the West, and there was even, supposedly, a message from US President Barack Obama paying homage to the martial arts hero. “Jackie Chan is a man who can talk through talent, he is a constant reminder of the strength of humanity. He will forever be in our hearts, a true inspiration who inspired many generations,”
Cruelly, it was the actor’s son, Jaycee Chan, who had to prove if the news was true, by making a phone call and finding him, fortunately, “busy as hell” organizing, with other Hong Kong celebrities, a charity concert on Friday to raise money for those struck down by the earthquake in Japan. Jaycee Chan described the false news as an “insane joke”, but Jackie Chan was not angry at the news. He said, “ It is not the first time to hear that I was dead.”
The Hong Kong-based The Sun Newspaper reported on Wednesday that a blogger with the handle “SKIPHOPZ” was the source of the false news.

You must think the computer is the best thing in the world, right You must think it works at a super speed and can do everything Well, it's not! In fact, the brain is much more powerful than any super computer! Think about when a glass is just about to fall off the table. Your brain controls everything that you need to do to save that glass from falling. First, your eyes check out what is going on, then tell your brain, and your brain decides how quickly you need to react, and then your muscles(肌肉)go into action. That is just from your brain. No computer could ever come close to that.
The brain weighs just 3 pounds, but it controls everything you do from thinking, learning, feeling even to breathing and your heart beating. Even though the brain is just 2% of your body weight, it uses around 20% of all your energy in your body. That is a lot for such a small organ(器官). There are about 100 billion tiny, tiny little cells in your brain. There are so many that it would take you over 3,000 years to count them all!
Your brain stops growing when you're 18, but it actually keeps developing and learning new things. So your parents are really super smart! You won't be able to fool them! Believe it or not, your brain NEVER stops working. Even during sleeping, the brain works for long-term memory establishment(建立). It is realized that the brain is the second organ in the body as the heart that never stops during human lives.

Do you know anything about the invention of the bar code (条形码)
A small food store owner found it was hard to keep records of the product information. In 1948, he asked the Drexel Institute of Technology to solve this problem. Bernard Silver, a graduate student, was interested. He and his friend Norman Joseph Woodland set out to work on it. Finally, they invented their first working system.
The system did work well at first, but it was very expensive and sometimes the system didn’t work well. If the invention was to become popular in stores, the problems had to be solved. Finally, Woodland solved them.
The patent (专利权) for the bar code system was asked for by Silver and Woodland in 1949, but the patent was not given until 1952. Although this patent was given, the system was still not popular with store owners.
In 1970, a business named Logicorn developed the Universal Grocery Products Identification Code (通用杂货产品识别码). Marsh Supermarket in Troy was the first store to set up this bar code reading system. It has become very popular ever since, and now it’s popular in all types of stores all over the world.

To let the cat out of the bag
A bag is useful and the word “bag” is useful, too. It reminds us of an interesting phrase, i.e. “to let the cat out of the bag”. In meaning it is the same as “to tell the secret”. And there is an old interesting story about it.
Long ago, when farmers wanted to sell chickens at the market, most of the time they would throw the chickens in cloth bags. But cats were cheaper than chickens, so many farmers would put cats into the cloth bags instead of chickens. One day, a woman asked a man for a chicken. The man gave her a cloth bag in which there was a cat. The woman asked to see the chicken. When the man opened the cloth bag, a big cat ran out. Not a chicken! The man’s secret was out and everyone knew it.
Now when someone lets out a secret, he “lets the cat out of the bag”. And that is the story where the interesting phrase comes from.

Do you like summer, a wonderful time for bike rides and backyard parties But do you feel like mosquitoes always choose you in a crowd Do you think your blood must be quite tasty because you're the one who always gets bitten when no one else does
It turns out that mosquitoes do have preferences, but it isn’t tasty blood that attracts them to their target. It’s all about how easily a person is to be found. Mosquito researcher Susan Paskewitz explains that “the main things are how you smell and how warm you are.”
When you exercise outdoors or go out in the heat of the day, your body temperature rises and lactic acid is produced. Mosquitoes are attracted to warmer bodies and to the smell of lactic acid, according to Smithsonian Magazine, so you are more likely to get bitten after a soccer match or a warm day in the playground.
When we breathe, we naturally breathe out CO2, which signals to mosquitoes that it’s dinnertime. John Edman, a scientist who studies insects, said that mosquitoes can smell CO2 from up to 100 feet away. The mixture of sweat, body heat, and short breaths after an energetic game is enough to send a mosquito over you for a snack.
Even your dressing style can affect whether or not you get bitten. Mosquitoes use colors to decide where to land, and they prefer dark colors. Wearing dark clothing or hanging out against a lighter background, like the grass, is a good way to turn yourself into a large target for mosquitoes. Wear white clothing, and they might fly right by.
