Module 3 Journey to space
Unit 2We have not found life on any other planets yet. (reading)
Analysis of learners Students will be from Grade Eight who are learning another set of materials. Most students are familiar with the earth, the solar system, the Galaxy and the universe, as well as the relations among them. But most of them don’t know their English expressions. Besides, whether there is life in outer space is still a question which the scientists aren’t sure. To solve these problems, pictures and short videos will be used at some point. And students can also work in groups to show their own ideas. After this class, students should be able to introduce the universe in English and express their opinions about life.
Analysis of materials The material is from Module 3 of Grade Eight published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The big idea of this unit is space. This is a section of reading. It’s a passage about whether there is life in outer space. The passage tells us the scientists’ opinions about life in outer space. It also displays the relations among the earth, the solar system, the Galaxy and the universe.
Learning objectives 1. They can understand the relations among the earth, the solar system, the Galaxy and the universe and the scientists’ opinions about life in outer space. 2. They can introduce the universe and express their own ideas about life in outer space. 3. They can learn about humans’ achievement in the field of aerospace, especially China’s achievement and make up their mind to do their part in realizing China’s aerospace dream.
Core competence Language ability: perceive and understand the passage, internalize and integrate information about the universe and and express their opinions about life in outer space Learning ability: choose proper reading strategies and cooperate with others to introduce the universe Cultural awareness: identify and spread humans’ achievement in the field of aerospace Thinking quality: analyze the reasons why humans choose the Mars to explore and compare the good sides and bad sides of life in outer space
Teaching thoughts Through the study of the passage, I want to cultivate students’ thinking quality, especially their critical thinking and creative thinking by analyzing the reasons why people chose the Mars and listing the good side and bad side of life in outer space. I also want to help students learn about humans’, especially China’s achievement in aerospace. In the process, to finish the learning tasks, their language ability and learning ability will improve as well.
Course resources A short video about the comparison among the planets in the solar system, a lot of pictures about humans’ achievement in aerospace,
Key points and difficult points 1. To understand the passage and give it a title 2. To introduce the universe in English brief 3. To learn about humans’, especially China’s achievement in the field of aerospace and make up their mind to do their part in realizing China’s aerospace dream
Teaching methods Task-based teaching method; Situational teaching method: Cooperative exploration;Individual study;
Teaching tools Powerpoint; writing cards; reward cards
Teaching assessment They will work in groups to introduce the universe, which is an assessment to their learning effects. Also, only one title will be picked out from all the titles each group gives.
homework Homework on knowledge: Please finish 3 & 4 on P21 Homework on ability: Please write a short induction about the yourself Homework on interest: Please search for more information about choose the Mars instead of other planets to explore universe by why people
Teaching stages and procedures Stage I: before reading Step I Greeting I’ll introduce myself first. Then the students need to introduce themselves. In the process, I can guide the students to say their interests Step II Leading in 1. I will show them a picture little by little and let them guess where we will go in this class. The students need to watch carefully and give me their answers. 2. I’ll ask them who and what we need most to travel in the universe. They need to show their opinions freely. Then I’ll show them my opinion.
Design intention To get close to the students, to motivate the students and lead in the topic by guessing the destination and expressing the people and things they need
Stage II: while reading The first Overall reading I’ll ask them whether we can find an alien guide in the universe. Students need to read the whole passage and show their opinions with the help of the scientists’ opinions. The second overall reading 1. I’ll ask the students whether there is anyone who has been to the other planets and what we can see in the universe. Students need to read the whole passage again and find out the answers.
Stage II: while reading 2. I’ll show them the earth , the sun, the solar system, the Galaxy and something else and ask them what the relations are. They need to use the sentences in the passage to answer. In the process, I will write down the key words on the blackboard which will be used later. (1) What’s the relation between the earth and the sun (2) What’s the relation between seven other planets and the sun Here I’ll complement what the seven other planets are, including their English names and Chinese names. (3) What’s the difference between the earth and seven other planets (4) What do the eight planets and the sun belong to Here I will show them a video about the solar system in order to let them have a clear image. (5) Is the solar system the biggest system in the universe Here I will complement why the Galaxy is called the Galaxy or the Milky Way and share a Chinese traditional story with them. (6) Is the Galaxy the only galaxy in the universe (7) How large is the universe 3. I’ll ask the students whether humans give up exploring and what has been done. They need to know humans have sent spaceships to the Mars and other planets. Then I’ll share a lot of pictures about humans’ achievement in exploring the Mars. 4. I’ll ask students whether people choose the Mars to explore instead of other planets. They can show their own opinions. Then I’ll share some reasons from the scientists. 5. Suppose we can find an alien guide, I’ll give them a chance to ask a question in order to get the students interest points. The third overall reading I’ll ask them to read after the tape. After that, they need to choose a title for the passage or name the passage by themselves. I’ll ask at least three groups to show their titles. The whole class will decide the final title together.
Design intention To guide the students to understand the passage and generalize the structure of it with the help of the question-chain which are designed according to the relations among the earth, the sun, the solar system, the Galaxy and the universe.
