Teaching Aims Knowledge Aims 1. To understand and use the flowing phrases: Christmas, lie, novel, eve, dead, business, punish, spread warn, end up, present, warmth and understand the true meaning of Christmas.2. Importance sentences:1) Many would agree that when we think of Christmas, we probably think of gifts, Christmas trees and Santa Claus.2) But behind all these things lies the true meaning of Christmas.3) He is mean and only thinks about himself. He doesn’t treat others nicely.4) Marley used to be just like Scrooge, so he was punished after he died.5) He warns Scrooge to change his ways if he doesn’t want to end up like him.3. To understand the true meaning of Christmas.
Ability Aims To train students’ reading skills.
Emotion Aims To learn to treat everyone with kindness and warmth, and spread love and joy everywhere you go.

Step 1Revision Listen and give comments. A student does a daily report about Halloween. Others take notes while listening and answer the questions. To give Ss more chances to practice English.
Step 2 Lead-in Display the word cloud.2. Show the objectives of this period. 1. Look at the word cloud and guess the topic of this period . 2. Get to know the learning objectives of this period. To help Ss get a general understanding of the objectives in this period.
Step 3 Group work Let Ss discuss in groups and create a mind map about Christmas. Discuss the Christmas in groups according to the mind map. To help Ss learn more about Christmas while sharing ideas within the groups.
Step 4Reading Let Ss read the passage by using different strategies and encourage Ss to finish the corresponding reading tasks.Task 1: ScanningTask 2 Detailed reading1. Para. 1: Read Para. 1 and finish the mind map2. Para. 2: Skimming. Skim Para. 2 and finish the information about the story. Read Para. 2 and learn the usage of inferring.3. Para. 4: Read Para. 4 and find Scrooge’s character at present.4. Para. 3: Skimming; Read Para. 3 and finish the chart. 5. Work on 2d and discuss with their partners. Task 3: Post-reading1. Watch the movies. Use the sentences from the text to describe the movies. 2. Ask Ss to retell the story. 1. Ss read the passage and finish different reading and speaking tasks.2. Check the answers in class. To train Ss’ reading ability as well as spoken English.
Step 5Summary Summarize Summarize what they’ve learned.
Step 6 Homework 1. Write your favorite festival. (For all)2. Search the Internet to find more information about Charles Dickens and A Christmas Carol. (For optional) Do their homework carefully. To improve Ss’ oral English as well as their writing skills and arose Ss’ interest in English.

Teaching Reflections: The ability goal is to train students’ reading skills, so I have designed five reading tasks. From their performance, I can tell they have mastered the reading skills by completing different reading tasks. From my point of view, the post-reading is the most interesting because students correctly filled the blanks while watching the movies carefully. After the reading tasks, they really understand the true meaning of Christmas.
