Unit 7 I used to be afraid of the dark.
Section A (3a-3c)
一、学习目标:
1. 语言知识目标:
1) 学习掌握下列词汇: background, interview, Asian, deal with, shyness, dare, private, guard, require, crowd, tons of.
2) 阅读短文,了解Candy的故事,按要求获取相关信息。
3) 通过阅读训练来提高学生们的阅读能力。
4) 继续学习运用used to来表达“过去常常”存在的状态或的发生的动作。
2. 情感态度价值观目标:
让学生明白事物是在不断发展、变化的道理,培养学生积极向上的心态和不放弃追求梦想的品质。
二、教学重难点
1. 教学重点:
1) 掌握本部分出现的生词和词组,达到熟练运用的目标。
2) 阅读短文,获得相关信息。通过阅读练习,来提高阅读能力。
2. 教学难点:
1) 复述主人公的故事,并结合自身谈论自己的故事。
2) 阅读短文,培养获得相关信息和理解的能力。
三、教学方法
本节课为本单元的第二课时,是一节阅读课,我将采用“语言交际法”,“任务型教学法”以及“小组合作法”。
四、教学过程
Ⅰ. Enjoying an English song :“Don’t be afraid!”
Ⅱ. Revision :revise“used to”
Show some photos of the students when they were little kids. Let them guess who they are and compare with what they look like today and say the changes on them.
Ⅲ. Warming up:play a game “That’s me”
Give students 5 sentences, if they have the same situation, they should stand up quickly and say “that’s me”.
I used to be short. 2. I used to be shy. 3. I used to have long hair.
4. I used to like story books. 5. I used to have a lot of free time.
Ⅳ. Before reading
Read the title together and try to guess some information through it.
Ⅴ. Fast reading
Tell Ss to read the article and identify the paragraphs in which the following information appears. Number the information [1-3].
____ How Candy’s life has changed
____ Candy’s advice to young people
____ Candy’s background
Ss look through the article quickly and try to get the main idea of each paragraph.

Ⅵ. Careful Reading
1. Read the first passage again and answer these questions in pairs:
⑴ How old is Candy
⑵ Where is she from
⑶ What does she do
⑷ What did she use to be like And how about now
⑸ How did she deal with her shyness
Ss try to read and find the answers to these questions.
Then check the answers with the Ss
Keys: 1. She’s 19 years old.

3. She is a pop singer..
4. She used to be really shy. She’s not shy anymore and loves singing in front of crowds.
5. She took up singing to deal with her shyness. As she got better, she dared to sing in front of her class and then for the whole school.
During this part, explain some new words: Asia, deal with, dare to do, crowd.
Read the second passage and finish 3b. Check the answers together and explain “tons of, appear to, guard”
Remind students that being famous is Candy’s dream, but she thinks it can also be a bad thing. Let them complete the chart by themselves.

Ⅶ. A competition
After learning the whole story, ask two students to come to the front and have a competition to tell whether the given sentences are right or wrong. And correct the wrong ones together.
Ⅷ. Retelling the story
Ask students to work in groups and try to retell the story. Then let them performance in front of the whole class.
Ⅸ. An interview (3c)
Tell them a piece of good news that Candy Wang is coming to Yichang. If you have a chance, what do you want to ask her. Make a conversation between you two. Then ask them to act out their conversation.
Ⅹ. After reading: free talk
Think about how Candy has changed in her story.
Candy used to be shy, but she took up singing to deal with her shyness.
After she became famous, she also has some changes. But she never gives up.
Candy is so brave that she can try her best to solve her problems.
Ask them to think about themselves and tell us their own story according to the following questions.
You used to have some trouble and problems, how did you deal with them
As you get older, you have to meet some changes in life, how do you face them
Ⅺ. Sayings
Teach them some beautiful sayings and encourage them to be brave to face these changes. They are normal in life. They can’t give up trying to achieve their dreams.
“Accept what you must, and change what you can.”
“You can’t change the past but you can change the future.”
“Beauty belongs to the confident, chance belongs to be prepared, and success belongs to the strong.” Explain them in Chinese.
At last, call on them to read the sayings together.
Ⅻ.Homework
1. Retell Candy’s story.
2. Write a short passage about how you have changed or how you face changes in life.
