Very soon after Roberta wrote to the old gentleman, the three children were walking through the tunnel when they heard a cry.
The children ran deeper into the tunnel. Before long, they found a boy. He was lying on the ground.
“What happened ” Roberta asked him.
“I’m Jim. I was walking through the tunnel when I tripped(绊倒). I think I’ve broken my leg.”“ The 11:15 train is due(到期)soon,” Peter said. “We must get you out of here.”
“I’ve been here for two hours,” the boy said. “I was on my way to the station to catch the train. It’s quicker through the tunnel than along the road.”
“It’s also more dangerous,” Roberta said.
Peter said. “We’ve got to get you out.” Then Peter and Phyllis helped Jim up. It was a difficult journey, but the children got there before the 11:15 train did. Finally, a signalman helped them and took Jim to Peter’s home.
Mother called for a doctor and helped Jim rest. The doctor said Jim needed to stay in bed for at least a month. Mother wrote a letter to Jim’s grandfather. She gave the letter to the doctor, who promised to post it.
“Can he stay with us ” Peter said. “We’d love to have a friend our own age.”“ Sure,” said Mother.
A few days later, Jim’s grandfather came to take Jim home. The children were surprised to see him. “You’re our old gentleman!” they exclaimed.
“That’s right,” he said. “And I got your letter, Roberta.” “What letter ” Mother demanded.
“Roberta wrote to me about her father,” the old gentleman said. “I was not surprised by what she said. I have thought for a long time that he was innocent. It was not possible that a guilty(有罪的)man could have such wonderful children. I think I can help you. Your father will soon be free again.”
Two weeks later, Father came back home.

Agriculture (农业) has a long history in China. Much of the wisdom (智慧) discovered by early Chinese scientists is still useful for farmers and gardeners today. One of China’s early agricultural (农业的) scientists was Jia Sixie, who lived in the sixth century A.D. He spent his time doing research into agriculture. He collected information, studied it, did experiments (实验) and learnt from the experience of farmers.
Around 540 AD, he wrote a book called Qimin Yaoshu. The book is about both farming and gardening. It includes advice on the following subjects: growing green vegetables and fruit trees, keeping animals, and fish in lakes. There are also instructions for making wine. Jia Sixie’s book is a helpful guide for farming. Firstly, as a farmer you should do things at the right time of the year. If you sow seeds and grow young plants in the fields at the correct time of the year, your work will be less and the results will be better. But if you go against nature, and do things at the wrong time of the year, you will have to do more work and the results will not be so good. The condition of the soil is also very important. Examine the soil on your farm carefully. If the condition of your soil is not good, you should improve it. Before sowing or planting crops, you must clean ground and remove weeds (清除杂草). Let sheep or cows walk on the land to destroy (破坏) the weeds or eat them. The best harvest is reached when farmers change the crops in their fields. For example, do not plant rice year after year in the same field. But if you plant rice in a field one year and wheat in the field the next year, you will harvest good crops. Other scientists said that wheat should be planted with space between the plants, but Jia did experiments and showed that planting wheat close together is better.
