Teaching contents Reading(1) When in Rome Period 2
Teaching objectives Knowledge objectives to learn some new words and expressions on talking about manners in the UK to learn something about good manners in the UK to tell differences from manners in China and the UK
Ability objectives to improve the reading skills of scanning and skimming to improve the reading skills of listening, speaking and reading to learn to grasp and summarize useful information
Emotion objectives to know “when in Rome, do as Romans do” to make students have good manners to cultivate students’ interest in learning more about different cultures and manners
Teaching focus to learn some new words and expressions on talking about manners in the UK to know the general information about manners in the UK
Teaching difficulties to improve the reading skills of scanning and skimming to cultivate the interest of students in the topic

Teaching Activities
Activity 1 Warm- up and lead-in Guide the students to discuss whether good manners in different manners are the same and lead in today’s topic.
Activity 2 Pre-reading Guide students to look through the whole passage and answer two questions.
Activity 3 While-reading Guide students to skim the interview and match the main idea of each part with proper lines. Guide students to scan Part 1(Line 1- 6) and answer two questions. Play a video and guide students to scan Part 2 (lines 7-9) and fill in the blanks. Guide students to listen to Part3&4 (lines 10-22) , judge Y or N and complete a table. Guide students to retell the passage with the help of a mind map.
Activity 4 Post-reading Group work. Work in groups of 4 and try to act out the interview. Play a video and guide students to answer 3 questions.. Guide students to understand the meaning of “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Guide students to conclude the most important tips when in other countries.
Activity 5 Homework Read the interview and retell it. Search for manners in different countries on the Internet and make a poster.
