Step 1. Lead-in. T: Do you like Christmas What do you know about Christmas Play a video about a woman talking about the festival and ask Ss to get some information about it. Play another video about a hedgehog and ask questions. T: Are you like this little hedgehog To deny or to share love？To reject or to accept others？ Step 2. Pre-reading. Provide some “gifts” for Ss and check their homework about previewing. Students read the new words and say their Chinese meaning aloud. Step 3. While-reading. 1. Fast reading. Read the title and the first sentence of each paragraph and find out the general idea. T: What’s the general idea of the passage？ Ss: The true meaning of Christmas by telling a story. Then ask Ss to match the main ideas with paragraphs. Careful reading. Read Para. 1 and answer the questions. Q1: What are the common things for Christmas Q2: What’s the true meaning of Christmas Q3: Which story is mentioned Q4: Why did the writer choose the story Read Para. 2 and list some information about the story. T: How much do you know about this book Sa: A Christmas Carol is a short novel written by Charles Dickens. The main character in it is Scrooge. Ask Ss to find out some key information about Scrooge and guide them to infer what the man is like. Read the second paragraph more carefully and think about the questions. Provide some other questions to lead Ss to find out more detailed information and infer more information based on the story.
