1. Last week, students at Rosie Bridge School worked hard to make their English Week a big success.

(1) make sb / sth + n. 意为“使某人/某物变得(成为)……”,其中,make 为使役动词,作“使得;使成为”解。例如:
学生们让汤姆当他们的组长。The students made Tom their group leader.
make 作使役动词时,常用句型有:make sb / sth do sth(省略to 的不定式)
让某人/某物做某事make sb / sth + adj. 使某人/某物变得……
例如:
这个有趣的故事逗得孩子们开怀大笑。 The funny story made the children laugh.
李老师总是让她的课趣味横生。 Miss Li always makes her lessons interesting.

2. Some students put on an English play. Other students took part in an English singing competition.
一些学生表演了英语话剧,其他的学生参加了英语歌唱比赛。
(1) put on 上演; 穿(衣帽);增加(体重)
在晚会上他们表演了一个节目。 They put on a show in the evening party.
她穿上她的新裙子出门了。 She put on her new dress and went out.
我去年冬天体重增加了许多。 I put on a lot of weight last winter.
(2) other在句中用作形容词,修饰可数名词复数,意为“另外的,其他”。如
我去过亚洲的许多其他国家。
I have visited many other countries in Asia.
(3) take part in意为“参加”,与join in和participate in意思相近。如:
我没有参加足球比赛。
I didn’t take part in the football match.= I didn’t join in / participate in the football match.
3. I advise people to speak slowly. 我建议大家放慢语速。

advise sb not to do sth 建议某人不要做某事

advice 是 advise 的名词形式,是不可数名词。常用的短语及句型有:
a piece of advice “一条建议”;
give sb advice on ... “就……给某人提建议”;
take / follow one’s advice “听从某人的建议”
4. If they want to be good public speakers, they’d better speak clearly and confidently.
如果他们想成为优秀的公众演说者,他们最好吐字清晰、充满自信。
had better 意为“最好”,表示对别人的建议、劝告或表达一种愿望。其中,
had 不可改为have 或has。had better 常以缩略形式’d better
出现。常用句型为had better do sth “最好做某事”,其否定形式为had better not do sth“最好不要做某事”。例如:
你最好马上离开。You’d better leave at once.
你最好不要告诉他这件事。You’d better not tell him about it.
5. In my opinion, every school should have an English Week.
