Passage 1(话题:水下机器人帮助发现海洋垃圾)
Scientists in Norway have created an underwater robot that can discover different kinds of pollution at the bottom of the sea. The robot will help clean-up teams discover the areas where there is rubbish, so they can then focus their time and money on removing the most harmful materials.
The robot, which weighs 45 kg and uses special cameras to get 3D images, was created by a team at Skarv Technologies.
The researchers put their work to the test at a bay(海湾) in the city of Bergen, on Norway’s southwest coast.
First, the robot swam up and down two meters above the seabed, collecting data. Then a computer was used to turn the data into a map, which showed different rubbish materials in different colors. The maps will be used to help the teams of divers who clean up the seabed locate the most harmful materials so that they can remove them first.
“Glass isn’t really polluting,” says Fossum, one in the Skarv Technologies team. “So if you know there’s an area with a lot of glass, you probably don’t need to worry about that and can focus on things that are putting heavy metals into the environment.”
As well as helping to deal with pollution, the robot can also show where creatures like starfish are on the seabed.

If you are looking to stay cool and comfortable during the hot months, you may be interested in Metaura Pro—a new wearable air conditioner. As the world’s first wearable air conditioner, it can continuously(可持续地) blow cold air to keep you cool.
You can wear Metaura Pro on your neck wherever you go.The wearable air conditioner comes with an app for complete control. In fan mode(模式),it can produce cold air that is 7°F cooler than normal air, and in cooling mode, the air it produces can be up to 18°F cooler than normal air.
With a weight of 435 g, Metaura Pro is not too heavy to wear, and it can be easily seen by anyone. It has a rechargeable battery (可充电电池)and can be charged quickly. With a fully charged battery, it can run for up to 8 hours.
Metaura Pro is driven by a powerful motor(电机). It has 26 small fans to give cool air and drive away the heat around the user’s neck. With its special cooling system,Metaura Pro can easily change hot air into cold air.
“Traditional fans don’t produce cold air in a hot environment, they only circulate(使循环) hot air. The stronger the wind is, the hotter you get. This is certainly not what you want during those hot summer days. That’s why we created Metaura Pro—to provide a better portable cooling solution. Two missing notebooks belonging to the scientist Charles Darwin were secretly returned to the Cambridge University Library recently. The stolen notebooks, which had been missing for over 20 years, were returned in good condition.
Mr.Darwin was a very famous scientist who lived in the 1800s. His ideas about evolution—how different kinds of living creatures change slowly over time—completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world.
Mr.Darwin recorded his ideas in a couple of notebooks. And since it took over 20 years for him to turn his ideas into a world-changing book, his notebooks have been considered quite important.
The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr.Darwin’s notebooks. The two that were missing were kept in a small box. They were last seen in 2000 when they were taken out to be photographed(拍照).In 2001,someone noticed that the box was missing.Luckily, the library had taken pictures of the notebooks’ pages, so the information wasn’t completely lost.
In 2020, the library made a great effort to find the lost notebooks. Workers searched through the 10 million books in the library but didn’t find them. Finally, the library asked people around the world to help look for the books. They also reported the missing notebooks were stolen so that the police would search for them, too.
To the librarians’ surprise, the two notebooks were returned on March 9,2022.They were put in a bright bag and left outside the librarians’ office. Passage 5(话题:跟耳机说拜拜)
Some people wear earphones(耳机) when they listen to music in a car because they don’t want to disturb(打扰)others. However, not everybody does the same. And road trips may seem much longer than you think when someone else’s music fills the car. What if they could listen to only their music without earphones, and no one else would hear it Although that may sound impossible, the technology is closer than you think. Researchers in France are working to build such personal sound zones in which people can listen to what they like without disturbing others.
“Why bother Why not just use earphones ” Some may ask. Well, earphones are good at controlling what you hear, but they can be uncomfortable, too. Besides, your hearing is at risk when you turn the volume (音量) of your music up to drown out(压过)other sounds around you.
That’s something Jan Mayes knows a lot about. She’s an expert in hearing. “Using earphones can cause hearing problems,” she says. “And not just in the elderly. Among people who like to listen to music with earphones, nearly 50 percent of young people aged 12 to 35 are at risk.”
And that’s why personal sound zones inside a car are needed. They could let you hear well without drowning out other sounds with high volumes. They would also bring many new possibilities. One day, everyone in a car could listen to what they would like to hear. The driver can listen to whatever music he’s interested in when the passengers are asleep, and the passengers can make phone calls without worrying about being too loud.

Msituni is a young giraffe born on February 1 this year at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California, the USA. When Msituni was born, zookeepers knew right away there was a problem with her front legs. Her front legs were bending(弯曲) the wrong way. This made it hard for Msituni to stand or walk. Zookeepers worried that she might not live long, since she needed to be able to stand to get milk from her mother.
To help Msituni, the zoo turned to a group called Hanger Clinic. The group has worked for years to create artificial arms, legs, and other body parts for people in need, especially those whose body parts are imperfect or lost. “We’ve never worked with wildlife before,”said Ara Mirzaian, an expert in the group. Still, the experts took on the challenge. They finally built Msituni her very own braces(支架)!They even made the braces with a spotted(有斑点的)pattern for a more natural look!
The new braces helped correct Msituni’s legs. Soon, she could walk and run easily! And she grew stronger and stronger. “I feel a great sense of achievement,” Mirzaian said.
