New Standard English: Book 8B Model 1 Unit 2 I feel nervous when I speak Chinese.
Analysis of teaching materials: The topic: Describe yourself to a pen pal The function: Describing feelings and impressions The teaching material: The reading material is an email message from a Western student called Sally to her Chinese pen pal, Lingling. It’s not only a pretty good material for students to learn to describe one’s appearance with a brief structure and in proper order, introduce one’s hobbies with various sentence patterns, talk about one’s feelings with sense verbs and adjectives correctly; but also a vivid passage to show students the hobbies, the personalities and the way to express feelings and politeness of Western students. The material also can get students interested in having a foreign pen pal and lighten their curiosity about the culture of other countries.
Analysis of students: “Self-introduction” is close to students’ life, and the majority of the new words aren’t difficult for my students since some were learnt and some can be understood from the context. So there won’t be problems for them to understand the basic information of the email message. And for writing, my students have been able to use basic expressions to introduce their appearance and hobbies. And they are willing to do that. Most of the students know little about the hobbies of Western students. And most of them need to know and understand the ways for people in the West to express their feelings. And also, most of they don’t have the experiences of making pen pals. Teaching objectives: By the end of this session, most students can be able to describe their appearance with a proper order and the brief structure with “with”, introduce their hobbies with various sentence patterns, and talk about their feelings with sense verbs and adjectives correctly; their ability of logical thinking and critical thinking will get a chance to be cultivated; They can realize the differences of hobbies and ways to express feelings between Western students and most Chinese students; And they will have a full comprehension of making pen pals. These will be achieved by: Predicting from the beginning of the email message. Skimming and scanning to understand the passage. Learning the ways to describe one’s appearance, hobbies and feelings, and practice them in situations. Discussing the differences of hobbies between Western students and Chinese students. Discussing Sally’s personalities and her ways to show politeness and express feelings. Writing an email with self-introduction to a pen pal Teaching focuses: To understand the email message and cultivate logical thinking. To learn and practice describing one’s appearance, hobbies and feelings. To discuss and realize the cultural differences in hobbies and ways to express feelings. To train the ability of critical thinking by discussing whether it is a good idea to have a pen pal. Anticipated difficulties: Students may not know enough adjectives to describe their appearance and feelings. Solution: Offer some adjectives to support them while practicing.
