I. Analysis of the teaching contents
This unit is chosen from the first book of New Standard English. It is the third unit. The theme of the whole module is about describing birthday parties and choosing proper birthday presents according to personal preference. And this unit is focused on language usage in which adverbial of frequency(always, often, usually, sometimes and never) is a very important part.
II. Student analysis
Seventh graders;
Interested in this topic and have quite a lot of experiences in it;
Have learned skills in listening and reading but need to improve speaking and writing abilities.
Learned about the practices and customs about having birthday parties and choosing presents in China but lack in those in Western countries..
III. Objectives
Language ability
Students will be able to use adverbial of frequency (always, often, usually, sometimes and never) to ask and answer about their birthdays (parties and presents)
Students will be able to use the simple present tense to describe their or other people’s birthdays.
Learning ability
Students will be able to learn vocabulary by topic word and remember them by collecting them in a table.
Students will be able to learn how to assess their learning effectiveness by doing self-assessments.
Thinking ability
Students will be able to think critically about the different birthday customs and habits between China and Western countries and learn to respect the culture of Western countries when communicating.
Culture characters
Students will be able to recognize the different birthday customs and habits between China and Western countries through comparing and form cross-cultural awareness.
IV. Teaching important/difficult points
It’s important for students to talk about birthday practices and choose proper birthday presents for others according to their habits and likes.
Students may find it difficult to understand some birthday practices in Western countries like not giving gloves as presents.

VII. Teaching procedures
Step1. Lead in
Greet students.
Students watch a video about a cartoon character, Peppa.
Step2. Pre-revision
Ask students why Peppa is so happy to introduce the topic “birthday”.
Step3. While-revision
Students have a brain storming about the word “birthday”.
The teacher supplements more words about “birthday”.
Students do a pair work: ask and answer about birthday activities.
The teacher supplements some traditional Chinese birthday activities that students may not know.
Students compare the different ways in celebrating birthday between China and Western countries and understand the importance of keeping traditions alive.
Students read Peppa’s birthday party invitations to her friends and the replies from her friends.
Students summarize the key information in writing and replying in birthday invitations.
Students do a pair work: ask and answer about birthday presents.
Individual student does reports about their and their partners birthday presents.
Students discuss other practices of birthday presents in China and Western countries.
Students read Peppa’s letter and fill the blank.
Students talk about Peppa’s problem and give advice.
Step4. Post-reading
Group writing: Give Peppa some advice on choosing proper birthday presents for her family. (Three offer ideas and one write down)
Individual student shares their advice with the whole class.
Students do a self-assessment to check if they have got all the key points of this lesson.
Step5. Homework
Students search for more information about birthday in China and Western countries and do a report in the next period.
