If you want to take a close look at a dolphin (海豚) in its natural habitat (栖息地) , there’s no better place to do it than at Monkey Mia, the only beach in Australia that dolphins visit every day.
The wild dolphins of Monkey Mia started getting used to people in the early 1960s, when local fishermen started throwing them fish. Soon the news of friendly
dolphins swimming around Monkey Mia began to spread, and before long the beach became very popular. However, by the 1980s, researchers had noticed a worrying fact—as adult dolphins became more dependent on humans for food, more and more of their babies died. Things got so bad that 90% of the babies failed to grow up. Luckily, the local government started to control dolphin feeding.
Today, only a small number of dolphins visit the Monkey Mia beach every day. And they are only fed a little fish so that they still go out hunting and teach their young survival(生存) skills. Visitors can only feed the dolphins when they are allowed. “We only feed them around 10% of their daily food,” said a staff member there. “This makes them go and hunt for 90% of their food. ”
The dolphins that visit Monkey Mia every morning draw more than 100,000 visitors to the beach each year. Visitors can get close to the dolphins, play with them and learn about them and their habitat.

Do you know about Psephurus gladius (白鲟) It’s a Chinese paddlefish known as “king of all national freshwater fish”. However, it is announced that the Chinese paddlefish living in the Yangtze River has become extinct(灭绝的).
A paper from Science of the Total Environment shows that the largest freshwater fish in China might have gone extinct between 2005 and 2010. Wei Qiwei, author of the paper, said in September, 2019, some experts supposed that the first-class protected fish had been extinct already.
The Chinese paddlefish was about 2 to 3 meters long and could grow longer than 7 meters. The fish had lived on the earth for 15 million years. The latest discovery of the fish was made in 2003. Scientists helped the fish to return and tried to track it. Unluckily, a boat accident caused the tracking efforts to fail. Since then, no discovery has been reported and no such fish has been kept in captivity(圈养).
“The Chinese paddlefish was so big that it was hard to raise in captivity,” Wei said. Between 1984 and 1993, he once
tried to save four fish, but only one stayed alive and returned to the river.
The extinction of the fish has called public attention and people have expressed sadness over the death, hoping such animals would be better protected so that future generations could see them. 我的独立写作
Animals are our friends. However, many of them are endangered or even die out.
Why are some animals in danger It is mostly because of human activities. Pollution makes animals lose their homes. Hunting directly kills animals. Meanwhile, climate change also is an important reason for the endangered animals disappearing.

It’s time to take action to protect animals. First of all, government can make stricter laws such as making a list of endangered animals to ban hunting them. Secondly, animal protection organizations can help people raise awareness of the importance of protecting wild animals. Third, we can refuse to eat any endangered animals or use products made of parts of their bodies like their fur or teeth.
THANKS!
