Reading books brings with it numerous benefits giving people the chance to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.
To celebrate the wonderment of books and those that make them come to life, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.
Setting a day to celebrate books traces its beginnings to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922, he came up with the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later, the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes’ birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay respect to authors and books world-wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a reasonable choice, besides being the date of Cervante’s death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died, among other prominent authors. Moreover, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The chosen city is tasked with carrying out activities to encourage “a culture of reading and spreading its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”

It's 2023 now. For the last 6 years, third grade students at a primary school in British Columbia have performed acts of kindness for people in Chilliwack. It's part of Watson Elementary's Kindness Project.
The project first started back 6 years ago when teacher Jen Thiessen and another teacher Kyla Stradling came up with the idea. Over the years, either one or two Grade 3 classes from Watson would take it on. But, this year five classes took part (all the Grade 3 students, and some kids in Grades 2 and 4), making it the biggest one ever. The students raised money for the project by selling cupcakes. This year they raised $1,400. Then they went to local parks and handed out flowers, chocolates, coffee and dog treats to strangers. Some stayed back and put together care packages(爱心包裹)for homeless people.
Each of the goodies given out that day came with a card with a sentence on it, written by Kevin Heath: "No act of kindness is too small. The gift of kindness may start as a small ripple(涟漪)that over time can turn into a tidal wave(浪潮)changing the lives of many." And it worked.
Kindness coffee is always the best. To help others, a woman was going to buy someone else a cup of coffee. No more than 10 minutes later, a man came up to Thiessen and handed her a $20 bill."This is for next year's project," he said. Her small acts influenced others.

If you want a fresh taste of flowers, now is the time! April and May are the best times to pick roses and make rose cakes.
Using fresh flowers to make art is also popular at this time of the year. Luo Wenying, a 29-year-old who loves making art out of flattened flowers, said, “I usually use special equipment to dry and press the flowers at the same time to better keep their color,” she added. Zibo city in Shandong province has unexpectedly gone viral on Chinese social media since late February for its local barbecue specialty. In March, the small city received about 4.8 million tourists. It is certainly not the only city that offers barbecue, or even the most famous one, but why did it enjoy such great popularity
Zhou Maosong, president of the Zibo Tourism Promotion Association, said the popularity started from the crowd-gathering effect of cultural and tourism activities including a music festival. Then famous people tasted the barbecue and put their experiences online attracting young people, which led to a wave of students from neighbouring cities visiting Zibo. What better way to attract adventurous and hungry college students except “tasty barbecue that makes you full within only 50 yuan!”
However, Zibo did not fall into the trap of easy fame that dies fast where sellers cheat buyers on price and quality for the most money in the shortest time. A blogger on Douyin took an electronic scale to ten barbecue stands in Zibo to test if he would be offered less food. It turned out that not a single one was caught short of weight and some owners even offered him local snacks for free. Local people’s honest and friendly behaviour touched even more people online and again lifted the city’s popularity.
Zibo’s successful story has raised a heated discussion about hometown cultural symbols on Weibo. People post about their cities’ unique dishes, places, etc, hoping their hometown may be the next Zibo.
