I'm excited because tomorrow I'm going to the hills with my aunt. I'm going to take my dog, Dizzy for a walk and then we're going to go swimming in a lake. We're not going home until after dinner!
My aunt's meeting us tomorrow at 9 a. m. to drive us there -so I should go to sleep now.
5th August
Today something awful happened. We were having a lovely day in the hills - Dizzy was happy and we had a lovely picnic. But when we went to the lake, things started to go wrong. We were swimming when Dizzy cut her leg badly on a rock. She fell over and started crying. We put a bandage round her leg and carried her back to the car.
It looks really painful so we're taking her to the vet (兽医) this evening.
6th August
The vet gave Dizzy a prescription (处方) for some medicine, and she said that Dizzy needs to have a small operation (手术).
Also, I think I've got the flu. When I got out of the lake, I was so worried about Dizzy that l forgot to get warm and dry. My mum's given me some medicine for my headache. She told me to go to bed and rest. But when I lie down, I can't sleep because I'm so worried about Dizzy.
7th August
I've got some great news. Dizzy's operation was a success! Dizzy's resting at the vet's at the moment and the vet says she can come home tomorrow. Hooray!

Last weekend, I wanted to buy a jacket in the flea market where people sell things at low prices and some people like to bargain (讲价) with the sellers. At first, the seller asked $100 for it, but I bargained with him until he agreed to take only $50. I thought I got a good deal, but my friend got an even better deal. She used Freecycle and got a jacket for free, no cost! And the jacket was worth a lot of money!
Freecycle is an online group. People give away things they don't need any more- for free! Other people get things they need, also for free, so they don't have to pay an arm and a leg. It's all about reusing and keeping good things out of landfills (垃圾填埋) . If you want to join it, you don't need to pay anything. The membership is free. When you join Freecycle, you choose a group
that is near you. There are groups all over the world, in over 100 countries, so there is probably a group near your home.
At Freecycle, People list all kinds of things: furniture, clothes, artwork, electronics, and more. You may need something that you can't afford to buy. But on Freecycle, it's free.
In the past, when talking about saving money, I always thought about a flea market or second-hand stores, where you can get a good price on used things and save lots of money. But now, I suggest an even better way to save money- Freecycle.
No matter at Freecycle, second-hand stores or at a flea market, you may have to spend some extra time looking for what you want, but it can be a lot of fun. You can also save a lot of money. It's really worth it!

Five hundred years ago, explorers(探险者)discovered America. They told stories about treasure hidden in South America. One of the stories was about a city called El Dorado (“the city of gold”) which was somewhere in Colombia. The story said that the local people painted their king with gold once a year. The king then washed off all the gold in a lake. When people in Europe heard this story, they began to talk about finding this lake and taking away the gold and treasure left on the bottom.
The west of South America was ruled by the Incas (印加人), who built great temples and palaces out of gold and shining treasure. The Spanish king heard about this. He sent his general, Francisco Pizarro, to South America to bring all their treasure back to Europe. Pizarro and his army landed in South America and soon caught the Incas' emperor. Scientists have discovered a new planet that is similar to the earth. The planet, called Kepler-186f, is slightly (no more than 10%)larger than ours and probably has seasons like the earth does. But while this news is exciting, there is a lot that we still don't know about Kepler-186f.
NASA-the organization that found the new planet-is always looking for planets with similar conditions to the earth's. Space scientists Thomas Barclay says that we should think of Kepler-186f as an "Earth Twin". Like our planet, it is made of rock. It is also likely to have water on its surface, which is unusual, but in many ways Kepler-186f is different from the earth.
The earth takes 365 days to go around the sun while Kepler-186f only takes 130 days to go around its star. The earth is brighter, too. At midday on Kepler-186f, the sky would look the same as during our sunset. And scientists don't yet know about the temperature on the new planet. There is a good chance that Kepler-186f is much hotter than the earth.
Unfortunately, humans will not be traveling to Kepler-186f any time soon. It is 500 light-years away, so the journey would take a lot more than 500 years. NASA is still looking for other liveable planets which are closer and easier to understand.
1. According to the passage, the earth is________ than Kepler-186f
A. larger B.brighter C. wetter D. hotter
2. The second paragraph mainly talks about________.
A. the organization called NASA in the US
B. the differences between the two planets
C. human's journey to Kepler-186f in the future
D the similar conditions between the two planets
3. What stops humans from traveling to Kepler-186f soon
A. Hard surface. B. Long distance. C. Bad weather. D. High temperature.
3. What's the writer's purpose in writing the passage
A. To introduce a new planet.
B. To compare the new planet with the sun.
C. To discover an organization.
D. To ask people to travel to Kepler-186f.
C
It's been said that good cooking is an art form. The truth is that it's much more than that. It's away to teach kids necessary 21st century skills. It invites kids to make connections to the outside world by asking, "Where does our food come from "and "What is the history of this recipe " And it allows them to apply what they are learning at school in their real life.
They also test the math skills of young chefs. Measuring ingredients (原料) is a common task in cooking or baking. Cooking also brings science ideas to life. It is a perfect chance for them to learn that oil and water don't usually mix.
Recipe failures (失败) matter as much as the successes, as they help kids develop resilience(韧性). When Helen, 11, took her cake out of the oven, she was disappointed to find that it was flat as a board. Her father told her about how he accidentally made cookies with garlic powder instead of powdered ginger(姜) when he was twelve. Then they worked together a few times to find out what had gone wrong with her cake.
Beyond the practical skills, cooking builds character. It encourages kids to work with others. It also encourages them to be open to foods they might not have tried. Jad, 11, had never eaten quinoa (藜麦) before testing a recipe with quinoa in it. His parents reported that he was so
excited about this new ingredient that he cooked it for his family the next night.
Of course, the best part of cooking with kids isn't the skills above. It's the memories you make together in the kitchen. This year, Olive and his family have already done a lot of holiday baking, including their favorite chocolate-chip cookies. They both felt excited even though the kitchen was in a mess.
1. The passage mainly talks about the advantages of __________ .
A. skills B. cooking C. science D. families
2. The underlined word "apply" in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to __________ .
A. teach B. finish C. use D. answer
3. The best part of cooking with children is __________ .
A. to make children learn math B. to help children learn from failures
C. to improve children's cooking skills D. to create sweet family memories
4. In the passage, the writer shows his ideas by __________ .
A. asking questions B. giving example
C. listing numbers D. making up stories
D
For both musicians and their fans, it's hard to say no to the excitement of a live concert. For fans, staying with others who share the same hobby and seeing their favorite musicians face to face are so exciting. For musicians, concert tours allow them to connect with their listeners and make big money.
So what happens when live tours are no longer possible In early 2020, governments stopped
people from traveling and staying together because of COVID-19(新冠病毒). Tours and concerts were cancelled, leaving both musicians and fans disappointed.
But musicians are creative, and technology can bring people together in ways that were impossible just ten years ago. And so one performer after another began to offer online concerts.
These online concerts were simple. Musicians just filmed themselves playing in their houses. They livestreamed (直播) their songs and listeners loved these online events. Online concerts are a great way for musicians to connect with their fans during a difficult time. In addition, they are a great way to bring people together. Although some online concerts require payment, most of them
are free. And this raises questions about whether they will continue when live concerts come back.
It is easy for artists to offer free music online when no one can leave their homes. But long-term, it can stop them from selling CDS or tickets to live shows. However, free online concerts may be a good way for bands to win new fans. People who might not normally listen to an artist's music may meet an online concert accidentally. This increases the number of people buying a musician’s music. Free concerts can be a good business decision after all.
1. The underlined word"them"in the first paragraph refers to __________ .
A. governments B. listeners C. musicians D. concert tours
2.What’s the advantage of online concerts according to the passage
A. Fans can see their favorite musicians face to face.
B. People can be brought together during a hard time.
C. Musicians can travel around to give free concerts.
D. Fans will surely buy more CDS and tickets to live concerts.
3. What's the writer’s opinion towards the future of free online concerts
A. He can't stand it. B. He's crazy about it.
C. He doesn't mind it. D. He's kind of supportive.
4. In which column of a newspaper can we read this passage
A. Environment. B. Travel. C. Education. D. Arts.
