My Favorite Travel Books
Matthew Karsten has been traveling around the world for nine years now, and it all started
after he was inspired by reading some useful travel books. Here is his personal list of the best
reads.
Travels With a Donkey in the Cévennes
Robert Stevenson
It is one of the first travel books I have read, which takes me on a walking journey with
Robert and his donkey (驴) Mosestine across a mountainous region of France. I get to feel what
traveling through 1870’s Europe was like. Robert and his donkey don’t get along well at first, but
they finally learn to become travel companions.
World Walk
Steven Newman
World Walk is the story of newspaper writer Steven Newman who packed his bag at the age
of 28 to start a four year-long journey around the world on foot. He walked his way across 22
countries in five heartfelt stories of the people he met along the way, as well as wild adventures A
lesson of hope and love is told through the exciting backpacking.

them.
The Cat Who Went to Paris

He’s a comedian, he’s an actor, he’s British and the whole world knows him as the silent,
black-haired character Mr. Bean. That’s right, Rowan Atkinson.
Atkinson was born in Newcastle, England and was educated at Newcastle University and
Oxford. While at Oxford, he met the writer Richard Curtis, who was studying there too, and they
became friends. Curtis was quite different from Atkinson. He had great love for words while
Atkinson enjoyed nonverbal (不用语言的) comedy. Together they began writing comedy reviews
for the Oxford Playhouse. Shortly afterwards, Atkinson began appearing in smaller theatres in
Edinburgh. After a show at the Hampstead Theatre in 1978, he was offered a part in the BBC
series Not the Nine o’clock News. This series got off to a slow start, but soon became a huge
success, with Atkinson winning a BAFTA award for his work. However, being a very wise man,
Atkinson saw the whole acting job as a hobby, along with his growing interest in car racing.
Atkinson made his big-screen appearance in 1983’s unofficial James Bond film Never Say
Never Again. That same year Atkinson appeared in the BBC series called Black Adder. The main
hero named Edmund, tries unsuccessfully to become King of England after accidentally killing his
uncle Richard I during a fight. This was followed by three hugely successful sequels each set in a
different era of England’s history. The Black Adder series won the Best Comedy Show of the Year
in 1990. He then went on to create Mr. Bean. A walking disaster, Bean was purely physical
comedy, different from Edmund. This character was a huge success and became another national
treasure. In 1997 Bean came to the big screen. A few years later, Scooby Doo became a box office
hit in the US in 2002. This was followed by Johnny English in 2003, a funny work of James Bond
films.
In his spare time, Atkinson collects classic cars and takes part in races. He also writes for the
British magazine CAR. He is a very shy man, and has managed to keep his private life, private.

Even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence, it’s time to pay attention to ChatGPT, because
this one is a big deal. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November to
第 4页,总 8页
show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can accomplish.
ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models. It lets you
type in natural-language prompts and then offers conversational replies. It remembers the thread
of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It finds
relevant information in its oceans of training data, and changes that into plausible-sounding(貌似
有理的) paragraphs of text.
You can ask it countless questions and often will get an answer that’s useful. For example,
you can ask it encyclopedia questions like, “Explain Newton’s laws(定律 ) of motion.” You can
tell it, “Write me a poem.” and when it does, say, “Now make it more exciting.” You can ask it to
write a computer program that’ll show you all the different ways you can arrange the letters of a
word.
A few days after its launch, more than 1 million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS
analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly
users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two
and a half years.
Many people fear that ChatGPT might help students cheat better. But as with many other
technology developments, it’s not a simple black-and-white situation. Decades ago, students could
copy encyclopedia entries and use calculators, and more recently, they’ve been able to use search
engines and Wikipedia. ChatGPT offers new abilities for everything from helping with research to
doing your homework for you absolutely.
Dustin York, an associate professor of communication at Maryville University, hopes
educators will learn to use ChatGPT as a tool and realize it can help students think critically.
“Educators thought that Google, Wikipedia, and the Internet itself would ruin education, but
they did not.” York said, “what worries me most are educators who may actively try to discourage
the acknowledgment of AI like ChatGPT. It is a tool, not a villain(恶棍).”
28.What is ChatGPT
A.A search engine system. B.A homework query system.
C.A navigation system. D.An intelligent chat system.
29.Which function of ChatGPT is Not mentioned in this passage
A.Chatting by voice. B.Explaining the meaning of something.
C.Creative writing. D.Computer programming.
30.What is the author’s attitude towards ChatGPT in this article
A.Negative. B.Objective.
C.Supportive. D.Not mentioned in the article.
31.What is Not true about the content of this article
A.ChatGPT can help students with their homework.
B.ChatGPT reduces students’ ability to think.
C.Some educators consider AI technology harmful to education.
D.You can get a useful answer to almost any question in ChatGPT.

China’s TikTok, which has taken the world by storm, is working its magic in its home nation,
too.
The Chinese version of TikTok, called Douyin, has amassed (累积) 400 million daily active
users, parent company Byte Dance (字节跳动) revealed in its annual report this week. This is an
impressive growth for the addictive video app, which had 250 million daily active users in January
last year.
第 5页,总 8页
The report, which describes users’ behavior and trends, shows the cultural difference between
China and the US, said Katherine Wu, an investor at New York-based firm Notation Capital.
Things that trend in these two countries are completely different. For example,
knowledge-based content is extremely popular in China, but less so in the U.S. Also, those
creators that did the most dance videos in China are users born in the 60s, while in the US, it
seems that it’s mostly teenagers who are creating the dances.
Byte Dance claimed that Douyin has established itself as the largest knowledge, culture and
art platform in China. 14.89 million “knowledge-based content videos” were shared on the app
last year, it claimed. For example, one of the world’s most valued startups claimed that the number
of users who posts videos about chemistry reached 130 million people last year. “On the art and
culture front, videos related to those topics had 543.1 billion plays on Douyin last year.” it
claimed.
Education has become a main use case for Byte Dance. TikTok, which is estimated to have
earned more than $50 million last year, already counts educational content as one of the most
consumed categories on its app across the world. The app launched an educational campaign in
India last year, where it has amassed more than 200 million users.
32.The difference in trends between China and the US reflects the difference in ________.
A.culture B.education
C.knowledge D.hobby
33.What videos are mostly shared on TikTok in China
A.Music videos B.Knowledge-based videos
C.Humorous videos D.Videos about chemistry
34.The passage is written by ________.
A.analyzing reasons B.showing survey results
C.stating arguments D.providing statistics and examples
35.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A.To introduce the app --TikTok.
B.To help customers use TikTok.
C.To reveal the popularity of TikTok.
D.To recommend TikTok to customers.
