Alison cornered me in the kitchen. “Daddy, I really want a rat!”
“Again ” I saw the ugly grey things with round eyes and long tails in my mind.
This topic was around in our family for about one year. This time, Alison told me seriously how she would take care of the rat herself, and how she would learn to be responsible. I wanted to say “no” as usual, but it was not the right reply for this situation.
“Well, you should at least do some research about rats: How much do they cost What care do they need ” I said, thinking that the answers she’d find might change her mind.
But Alison acted. She searched for information and made many notes. She learned what the best cage for rats is and what types of food they can (and can’t) eat. She even learned that two rats are better than one—they like staying together.
I finally gave in. We called up several pet stores, asking for baby rats. One store told us it just received some that would be ready on sale in a week. Alison was so excited—her dream would come true soon.
On Sunday afternoon, I drove Alison there. I must say, the rats were much cuter than I’d imagined.
Alison carefully picked out two little ones with her soft little hands. She cradled the cage with them, singing with a huge smile.

In 1994, a Japanese Masahiro Hara invented the Quick Response code(QR二维码) as a way to increase the amount of information that could be stored on a paper label. Before this, one-dimensional(1 D) barcodes had already been used since 1974 when the first barcode(条形码) was scanned in a supermarket in USA.The first barcodes is made up of two parts: the barcode and the 12-digit number. But the two-dimensional(2 D) code made by Mr. Hara can hold as much as 7,000 digits or 4,000 characters of text, including all Japanese characters. Many books have QR codes on their back cover which provide information such as the price, the author and the publisher.

Have you ever dreamed of traveling in space To travel in space, we first have to work out where our food will come from.
Today’s space travelers don’t go to the Moon or Mars. They go to the International Space Station (ISS).There, the spacemen live for weeks to months.
If you visited the ISS years ago, nearly every kind of food you ate would have come from the Earth.
In 2014, scientists sent the ISS a space garden with some vegetable seeds (种子). With water and some light, the vegetables in the garden grew. Those were the first foods being grown on the ISS. But the spacemen couldn’t eat them and had to send them back to the Earth. The next year, after scientists made sure they were safe, the spacemen grew a second crop. This time the vegetables were ready for the spacemen to eat.
Gardening is more difficult in space than it is on Earth. Without gravity, plants don’t know which way is up. But they learn how to grow. They send their leaves in the direction of light and their roots into the soil.
The spacemen have also grown vegetables as well as flowers. It’s important to know a plant can flower in space, because flowering is part of how some plants make fruit.
While the space garden is small now, hopefully it could one day help provide people with food on long-time space trips.

D.Try to Find a Good Job.
The 2022 Qatar World Cup brought us wonderful games and let us see the great show of old legends and the rise of new superstars. Here are three students’ favourite soccer players.
Kylian Mbappe, who is a sports hero in France, is the most impressive player in my heart. He won the 2018 World Cup title at the age of 20. He was the highest goal scorer in this World Cup with eight goals. Will he become the new king of soccer I think so. The reasons are that he trains hard and never gives up when facing difficulty. And he is indeed no solo (单独行动的)artist, either. His spirit of hard work and teamwork cheers me up.
Zhao Xuanyu, 14
My deepest impression of the Qatar World Cup belongs to Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina. As a great team, it was surprising when Argentina lost its first game against Saudi Arabia. People started to doubt Messi’s ability. However, Messi didn’t give up. He believed in himself and his teammates. They practiced harder than before and fixed their problems quickly. Finally, Argentina beat Mexico, Poland, Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia and France, and won the World Cup title. From all this, I now believe that where there is a will, there is a way.
Huang Yixiang, 15
I’m a huge fan of Luka Modric, the captain of Croatia’s national soccer team. He led his team to win second place in the 2018 Russia World Cup and he won the Ballon d’Or in the same year. At an early age, he was a shepherd (牧羊人)and his country was experiencing war. But he fell in love with soccer. Through his efforts, he became more and more powerful. In the Qatar World Cup, he led his team to third place, but he believes that his country can win a World Cup title in the future. I not only enjoy his wonderful performance, but also his spirit—never give up and always keep his condition.

Next morning, there was no wind and we were half a mile from the eastern coast of the island.
Although the sun shone bright and hot, I hated the thought of Treasure Island, afraid of what would happen there.
Because there was no wind, the small boats pulled the ship three or four miles round the island, to a safe place to drop the anchor. I went in one of them. It was hard work pulling the ship, and the men argued. Afterwards, they sat around the deck, and the smallest order was received with an angry look.
“If I give another order,” said the captain, “the whole crew will mutiny(反叛). Only one man can help us.”
“And who is that ” asked the squire.
“Silver,” replied the captain. “He wants to keep things calm as much as we do; he wants the men to wait. Let’s allow them an afternoon on shore. If they all go, we’ll have the ship. If some go, Silver will bring them back as gentle as sheep.”
Guns were given to all the honest: men. Hunter, Joyce, and Redruth were told what was happening, and were less surprised than we expected them to be. Then the captain went on deck to talk to the crew.
“Men, you’ve had a hot, tiring day,” he said. ‘The boats are still in the water. Any man who wants to can go ashore for the afternoon. You’ll hear a gun half an hour before the sun goes down to call you back.”
They all became happier at once. I think they thought they would find the treasure lying around on the beach! After some talk, six men stayed on board, and the others, with Silver, got into the small boats. I then had the first of the mad ideas that helped to save our lives. If six men were left, we could not take control of the ship; and because only six were left, the captain’s men did not need my help. So I quickly went over the ship’s side and into the nearest boat.
