It was December and the snow was falling quietly outside. The four March sisters were sitting around the fire in the living room. They were knitting(织) socks for 1 . There was a war and everyone had to help.
Meg was the 2 of the four sisters. She was sixteen. She was very pretty and she loved pretty clothes. Jo was fifteen. She was very tall and thin. She was different from Meg. She didn’t 3 dresses or hairstyles. She was a tomboy(假小子). Beth was thirteen. She was very shy and 4 and she seemed to live in a happy world of her own. The youngest, Amy, looked like a snow princess with her blue eyes. She loved beautiful things and she was a little vain(虚荣的). She also thought that she was a very important person.
“Christmas isn’t Christmas without any presents,” Jo said 5 .
“I hate being unwealthy!” Meg said, looking at her old dress.
“Some girls have lots of nice things, and 6 girls have nothing at all,” said Amy. “I don’t think it’s 7 !”
“But we’ve got Father and Mother, and each other,” said Beth.
The four sisters looked happy for a moment when they remembered this.
“But we haven’t got 8 ,” said Jo. Their smiles suddenly disappeared. Mr March was far away 9 the soldiers.
“Mother says our men are suffering and we 10 spend money for pleasure,” Meg said. “That’s why we can’t have presents this year.”
“Well, each of us has a dollar to spend,” said Jo. “ 11 can the army do with four dollars 12 ! I don’t expect anything from Mother but I’d like to buy a book for myself!” Jo was a(an) 13 .
“I want to spend mine on some new music.” said Beth. She played the piano and she loved singing.
“I’m going to buy a box of drawing pencils. I really need them!” said Amy. She wanted to be an artist.
“Mother didn’t 14 anything about spending our own money,” cried Jo. “Let’s each buy what we want and have a little fun; I’m sure we 15 hard enough to earn it.”
It was true. The two older sisters had jobs. Meg worked as a teacher for the King family and Jo looked after Aunt March, their father’s rich, bad-tempered(坏脾气的) old aunt. Beth and Amy helped with the housework.

As AI art generators (生成器) take the world by storm, some people wonder if their works should count as art at all. The technology is still developing and has some problems to work out, which means there are indeed flaws to consider along with the unbelievable artwork a good artificial intelligence (人工智能) can produce.
Art is classed as the product of imagination, skill, experience, and feelings, usually meant to represent something for the public to enjoy. Artists spent time and effort putting their inner worlds onto these works. Machine intelligence also puts a lot of work into sorting through tons of data, linking someone’s tips to datasets (数据集), and trying to represent it as best as possible. The difference is that the AI is driven by instructions instead of an emotional need to express itself.
AI painters can produce over 1,000 original (原创的) works of art with every tap of the enter key on a keyboard. But a mass-produced print of the Mona Lisa is worth less than the actual Leonardo da Vinci’s painting. Why Rareness — there’s only one of the original. Should anyone pay for these things And if an artist puts AI works up for sale, what should the price be
AI art includes a program imitating the work of famous artists to create a new piece according to the need of a human. But who made the artwork, the machine or its user And can the original artists protect copyright Such questions make the appearing of artificial intelligence and the art industry more difficult, increasing arguments against recognizing AI-generated art as marketable artistic products.
Once we’ve answered those questions, we can deal with the really big one: When an AI-generated painting wins an award, who gets the prize

Now the US government is considering banning TikTok. Some US users share their opinions on the possible ban.
Hana Schwarz. I think it’s funny. They are trying to stop us from using TikTok, but many other social media websites are doing similar things. 1 But in my opinion, the system provides me with short videos that I want to watch. 2 I don’t care about the worries lawmakers have about TikTok. For me, as long as the users enjoy the videos, it’s fine.
Darlette Wilson. When I heard the news, I was very surprised and upset. TikTok shows interesting videos to more people and unites people to have more fun. 3 TikTok has changed so many lives. People make new careers out of it, and some even raise money for a good cause. 4 It becomes a very important part of many people’s lives.
Alex Pearlman. I don’t understand this ban on TikTok. It looks like the government doesn’t want people from other countries to run media companies. 5 For example, the Wall Street Journal, a famous newspaper in the US, is owned by an Australian. If the government is afraid that China is spying on us through TikTok, they should ban every smartphone for sale on Amazon – because many of them are made in China!

Reading books brings with it numerous benefits giving people the chance to explore new worlds and meet new people both real and imagined. It expands our knowledge and understanding of the world around us and those far away.
To celebrate the wonderment of books and those that make them come to life, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day in 1995. However, it got its start long before that in Spain.
Setting a day to celebrate books traces its beginnings to Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andrés. In 1922, he came up with the idea as a way to honor fellow countryman author Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later, the first celebration took place on 7 October, Cervantes’ birthday, but was moved to 23 April, the date of his death, in 1930.
In 1995, the UNESCO General Conference decided to pay respect to authors and books world-wide as a way of encouraging everyone to access books. Choosing 23 April seemed a reasonable choice, besides being the date of Cervante’s death, it also happens to be the date William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega died, among other prominent authors. Moreover, several distinguished authors were born on 23 April making it a symbolic date in the world literature.
Annually since 2001, one city around the world is chosen to be the UNESCO World Book Capital for a year. The chosen city is tasked with carrying out activities to encourage “a culture of reading and spreading its values in all ages and population groups in and out of the national borders.”

If you lose hope for the future, watch the movie The Shawshank Redemption(《肖申克的救赎》). It won seven Oscar nominations, 1 the Best Motion Picture, the Best Actor.
Andy Dufresne, the main character, was charged with killing his wife and her lover, and was sent to a prison 2 Shawshank. Because he insisted that he was not guilty, he tried and 3 ran away from prison 20 years later. Hope and freedom are of great importance throughout the movie.
In my opinion, Dufresne finally made his escape because he had a heart full of hope. Just 4 he said, “Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” 5 he ran away from the prison, Red, his inmate(狱友), said, “I have to remind 6 that some birds shouldn’t be trapped, because their feathers are just too bright…”
Among all the scenes, the 7 one for me is about old Brooks, a senior prisoner, who had been in Shawshank for over fifty years. When he 8 free, he found the world outside was his true prison. “These walls are kind of 9 funny lie which first you hate them, and then you get used to them. Enough time passes, and you depend on them”. That was why he ended his life hopelessly.
The different 10 of Dufresne and Brooks made me think a lot. We should never give up hope when we are going through awful things. This is the spirit of The Shawshank Redemption.
