Like many kids, Tang Cheng dreamed of being a scientist. To make his dream come true, he gained a doctoral degree (博士学位) from the Chinese Academy of Sciences(中国科学院) in 2021.
Tang was expected to work at a university. But he took part on a different journey—being a full-time content creator(内容创造者) on Bilibili. Now he is focusing on science communication by running an account named “Fun Stuff”, along with his wife Cai Chunlin. “There exists a big gap (隔阂) between the public and the science community,” Tang said. “And I want to do something about it.” He added.
They hope to arouse people' s interests in science by making videos with simple words, clear explanations and a funny style. They first started translating foreign science videos from English to Chinese. Later, they decided to make their own videos. For beginners, it was difficult work. After months of preparation, they uploaded (上传) their first video in 2019 and it soon became a hit.
Thanks to the strict training in university, Tang is good at searching for information. He also pays attention to small things. For example, he often reads a lot of papers to find out the scientific name of an animal. Tang believed that his experience is important in helping with science communication.
For the past several years, “Fun Stuff” has had more than 2.5 million followers on Bilibili and they are mainly aged between 15 and 30. Tang said he will stick to the path (道路) of improving science communication, as it bridges the pubic and the scientific world and really brings a huge sense of achievement and satisfaction.
