(2022秋·江苏·八年级统考期末)The use of chopsticks has been a part of Chinese food culture. There are some taboos (禁忌) that you must pay great attention to, or you may make mistakes and be laughed at.
First, don’t use chopsticks to hit the side of your bowl or plate to make a lot of noise, because Chinese people think only beggars would do this to beg for meals. Second, when you use chopsticks, don’t use them to point at others, which would be regarded as a bad manner to others. Third, it is thought to be an impolite behavior when you suck (吮吸) the end of a chopstick. People will think you lack family education. Fourth, don’t use chopsticks to pock at (拨弄;捅) every dish without knowing what you want. And last, don’t insert (插入) chopsticks straightly into the bowls or dishes. Chinese people do this only when they burn incense (焚香) for the dead.
Nowadays, chopsticks are used more wisely. For example, you can buy a pair as a gift for your friends or relatives. In Chinese, it reads “Kuaizi”, which means to have sons soon, so a newly-married couple will be happy to accept it as their wedding gift.

Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom—Disneyland. And one thing made our visit seem truly magical. We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn’t take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff(员工)members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Why do people cry Scientists say the body produces tears because they need them. One kind of tears is for the eye, the other is for the heart. They both work as cleaners. If something else like dust(灰尘) gets into your eye, tears also come into the eye to clean it out. If you are hurt by something, your strong feelings produce some poisonous chemicals(毒素) in your body, and at the same time, tears come out with them. If these poisonous chemicals are not cleaned out of your body as soon as possible, they will do harm to the heart sooner or later.
In the United States men have heart problems more often than women do. Doctors say heart problems have something to do with the pressures(压力) of living and working now. Perhaps men suffer more from these illnesses because they do not cry enough. They need to cry more.

(2023·江苏徐州·八年级徐州三十五中校考阶段练习)Living in a different culture can be a both exciting and challenging (挑战性的) experience. You have to lean different cultures and try to get used to them. Let’s share some cultural differences between China and the US to help understand each other.
Pay (隐私) — Chinese people talk about subjects such as ages and income (收入), which Americans think is not polite.
Families — In China, elders are traditionally treated with respect (尊重). In America, the goal of the family is to encourage independence (独立), especially that of the children. Unlike the Chinese, few elder Americans live with their children.
Friends — Chinese people have different understanding of “friends”. In China, “friendship” means a lifelong relationship between friends who think it’s their duty to give each other any help. Americans always call people they meet friends.
Money — The Chinese like saving money. They are always careful when they are planning to spend money. It is different in America, where far fewer families are saving money.
Education — Chinese people value education and jobs more than Americans do, who pay more attention to good nature instead.

According to some old Chinese stories, there once was an ancient emperor named Shennong. At that time, people could not tell the difference between medicinal and poisonous (有毒的)plants. When they got sick, there was no medicine to treat their illnesses. Many sick people could only wait for death.
To save his people, Shennong decided to find and test out different plants. He and his followers set out on a journey in search of medicinally effective plants. Once, they saw a large forest on a high cliff (悬崖)from a distance. There must be many different kinds of plants, but they couldn’t find a way to the cliff. Suddenly, they saw some monkeys climbing along the vines and trees hanging down from the cliff. Shennong was inspired by the scene. He asked his followers to cut down the tree trunks and vines. Together they built scaffold (脚手架), with its help, they climbed to the cliff and collected many valuable plants.
Each time the team found a new type of plant, Shennong would taste it himself. Some plants made him sleepy. Some caused him to suffer pains in his stomach. Some made him tremble (颤抖) all over. After searching and testing over a long period of time, he and his followers discovered hundreds of medicinal plants.
As they continued their search, the team found a plant with small yellow flowers on a mountain. When a young man reached for it, the plant moved like a worm. Shennong picked off one piece from the plant in order to taste it. Other people tried to stop him, but Shennong said calmly, "It looks like a medicinal plant. I have to test it, or some people may misuse it.”
Suddenly, Shennong’s face turned pale and he fell on the ground. Blood flowed from his mouth and nose. Even after he was given the leaves from other medicinal plants, he was still not able to recover. The emperor soon took his last breath. People covered him with thousands of flowers. From then on, they called him the “Emperor of Medicine”.

An interesting experiment shows that many joints (关节) and muscles are being exercised when you use chopsticks. They certainly make you cleverer, don’t they

Sit near the front of the plane. When choosing seats, choosing a seat near the front of the plane will have a smoother ride. Soret says, “The front part of the plane is usually the most comfortable. You hardly feel the turbulence(骚乱) if it is not very serious.” Soret also says the front part of the plane is the quietest.
Taking an aisle seat(靠过道座位) is also a good choice. Soret says the aisle seats have bigger leg room. But sitting on the aisle comes with the duty of getting up when fellow passengers in the row have to use the bathroom.

Jane was not a confident girl before, because she was fat and others often laughed at her. As a result, Jane became very shy. She was afraid to say hello to strangers. She was afraid to ask simple questions and speak loud in front of others. It seemed that she felt afraid of everything in her life. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.

In about five months, China returned rock and soil samples(样本)to the earth from the moon and landed a robot on Mars—both very difficult tasks. The world couldn’t help but want to know: What are those great Chinese scientists and engineers going to do next
On Thursday, June 17, 2021, they had the answer. At 9:22 a.m., a Chinese rocket carrying three astronauts(宇航员)in the Shenzhou 12 spaceship took off at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. The largest space station in human history, the International Space Station, is now a 24-year-old one by 2022. It has housed over 200 astronauts from 19 different countries—but not China. This time, our astronauts reached Tiangong space station, a space station of our own.

A week later, when we saw the cat again, we left food out and hoped that he would eat some. But he didn’t. The winter was coming. One day I saw him sitting more quietly and when he turned around I saw there was something wrong with one of his eyes. He couldn’t open his right eye. I knew he wouldn’t let me give him some medical treatment. I caught him the next day and took him to a vet. The vet said that his right eye had to be removed and that he also had another serious illness. I paid lots of money for his medical treatment. Since it was winter, I kept the cat inside at home and placed him in a bathroom where he lived under the bathtub for 3 months. Every time I entered the room, he tried to climb the walls to get away from me. But I never stopped showing him how life could be as an indoor cat. I played music every day and I told him my life story over and over again, until one day in spring he was not afraid of me any more and came out from under the bathtub towards me and rubbed his big head on my leg.

Schoolwork is becoming more and more difficult for students now. Recently, some new rules (规定) have been made to make them have a happy school life.
These new rules are made for schools in Jiangsu province. They include some parts. For example, teachers of primary and junior high schools can’t reveal (公布) students’ test scores. They should use letters like A and B to grade students’ test results.
Because of COVID-19, students spent a long holiday at home. After the new term started, some schools might give more homework or classes to students. But the new rules ask schools not to do that. At the same time, students should have music, sports and art classes as usual.
People have different ideas about the new rules. Yin Fei, a college professor, says some students are not good at studying, but they can do well in other things. So it is good to cancel (取消) scores. But Peng Ming, a teacher in Nanjing, worries about that. He thinks scores are still important. Students need to get high scores to enter good colleges and parents care about their children’s scores. There are many wetlands in China and some of them have become the world’s important wetlands. The Chinese Yellow Sea Wetlands are among them. They are in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province. They are home for many different kinds of animals. The world’s largest Milu Deer Nature Reserve is in them. More than 700 Milu deer live freely there. There are not many red-crowned cranes in the world, but every winter you can see some in the Red-crowned Crane Nature Reserve in the Yellow Sea Wetlands.
The temperature in the wetlands is usually neither too high nor too low. There is a lot of rain and sunshine, too. They are really good places for wildlife. Offering(提供)food and home for some special kinds of animals is not the only reason why we need to protect wetlands. Wetlands are important because they also prevent flood. But some people want to change the wetlands to make more space for farms and less space for wildlife.

Gloria said, “Really ” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with “her” ice-cream.
Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride. She went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out of the exit. Gloria said, “Thank you,” but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.

Rabbits can bring people good luck in different cultures.
In Chinese culture, the rabbit stands for the moon. Ancient people believed a rabbit was living on the moon. The rabbit is called the Jade Rabbit or the Moon Rabbit. It’s the pet of the moon goddess Chang’e.
In nature, rabbits can reproduce (繁殖) in large numbers in a short time. In this way, ancient Chinese people also saw the rabbit as a good sign. They believed the more children they had, the luckier and happier they would be.
Western people also see the rabbit as a sign of good luck. They believe a rabbit’s foot can bring good luck to its holder. Old tradition has it that if teenage hunters caught a rabbit, they could be awarded (奖励) the animal’s hind (后部的) foot in a ceremony. It welcomed them to manhood (成年) within their clan (部族) .
Rabbits also show up in other areas of Western culture. The night before Easter (复活节), kids often make nests for the Easter Bunny in the garden. Rabbits are close to the idea of new life because they have lots of babies.

Every holiday and weekend, whether it's sunny, rainy or snowy, the Meeks would go out to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing, skiing, and so on. (2023·江苏扬州·八年级校联考阶段练习)The Yangtze River, about 6,300 kilometres long, is the longest river in Asia. It provides a lifeline for hundreds of millions of people. It covers an area of 1.8 million square kilometres, about a fifth of the national total. The river also provides a third of our country’s fresh water resources. Along with the Yellow River, it is considered as China’s “mother river”.
However, in recent years, this “mother river” has met with some environmental problems. It was seriously polluted and the number of the fish is getting smaller. To solve these problems, the government passed the Yangtze River Protection Law. The law came into force on March 1, 2021. There are nine parts in the law, covering areas such as resource protection, anti-pollution measures, green development and legal responsibilities. More importantly, the law has introduced a fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze River’s natural waterways. According to the new law, both the central government and local organizations would put the river protection into their economic (经济的) and social development plans.
Around 231,000 fishermen had given up their fishing rights along the Yangtze River. Chinese Vice-premier Han Zheng said that more support should be given to these people to help them find new jobs. He also calls for stronger efforts to help prevent activities which are not allowed by the law and encourages the public to support the ban.

Gulliver managed to get away from the small men. He found a boat and tried to sail home. However, there was a great storm at sea. The strong winds drove his boat to an island.
It was strange that everyone on the island was very large. They were all more than 20 meters tall. A farmer found Gulliver and took him home to his daughter. Gulliver seemed very small to them, like a toy or a pet. The farmer’s daughter took Gulliver to town to show him around. Everyone in town was very surprised to see such a small person.
The Queen heard about Gulliver and bought him from the farmer. She gave Gulliver to the King as a present. The King enjoyed listening to Gulliver talk about his home country and his many travels. Their chairs, tables, knives, forks and plates were all much too big for Gulliver to use, so they built a small house for him to live in. Wherever the King and Queen went, they carried Gulliver with them in his house.
One day they went to the beach. While they were there, a large eagle picked up Gulliver’s house-with Gulliver in it-and carried him high up into the air. But the house was too heavy, so the eagle dropped it into the sea. Gulliver used his house as a boat until a ship found him. The ship took him home.
