一、阅读回答问题
(2021春·上海奉贤·七年级校联考期末)根据以下内容回答问题。
There once lived two twin brothers called Sam and Tom. They looked almost the same, but their characters (性格) were totally different. Sam was generous, while Tom was greedy.
As they grew up, their father wanted to share his fortune (财富) equally. However, Tom did not agree and argued that the one who was more intelligent and strong should receive a greater fortune.
Sam agreed. Their father decided to organize a competition between the two. He ordered his two sons to walk for as long as they could and then to return home before sunset. If one of them covered the longer distance and returned home before sunset, he would get more wealth than the other.
Both started to walk a long way on a sunny day. Sam walked slowly and steadily, while Tom ran fast.
At noon, Sam decided to return so that he could reach home on time before sunset. However, Tom was greedy and wanted to get more wealth, so he did not return home even after noon. He walked twice as far as Sam and decided to return before sunset. Unluckily, when the moon rose, he was still far away from home.

(2023春·上海·七年级期末)As a young man, Alan was a skilled artist with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his elder son developed a bad stomachache. Thinking it was only some common intestinal(肠的) disorder, neither Alan nor his wife took the condition very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
Since he thought the death was caused by his carelessness, he always felt guilty. To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain of the two situations were more than Alan could stand, and he turned to alcohol for help. Soon Alan became an alcoholic(嗜酒者), so Alan began to lose everything he owned—his land, house, etc. Finally, Alan died alone in a small bar. When I heard of Alan’s death, I thought, “What a totally wasted life! What a complete failure!”
As time went by, I began to revalue my earlier rough judgment I knew Alan’s now adult son Erie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn’t heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly. “As a child until I left home at 18, my father came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said. ‘I love you, son.’ ”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized what I had been a fool to judge Alan as a failure. He had not left any material wealth behind, but he was a “real” father in his son’s heart.

“Look at me,” said the elephant. “I can pull up a tree with my trunk.”
“Ah! But your skin is not so thick as mine,” replied the crocodile. “No knife or tooth can cut through it.”
Just as they were talking, a lion happened to pass.
“My dear friends!” said the lion, going up to them, “Let me know why you were quarrelling.”
“Would you please tell us who is better ” cried both at once.
“Certainly,” said the lion, pointing across the river. “Do you see the metal hat on that wall Go and get it, and bring it to me, and then I can tell you.”
When hearing this, they started off. The crocodile was used to the water. He reached the other side of the river first, and soon stood beside the wall. There he waited till the elephant arrived. When he saw the crocodile had no way of reaching the hat, the elephant raised his long trunk and took it down easily.

The metal hat quickly fell to the river bottom. The crocodile dived down, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned and the crocodile put the metal hat at the lion’s feet. (2021春·上海虹口·七年级上外附中校考期末)It was Saturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing the twins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in the same manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tell them apart sometimes.
Unlike their classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to prepare for their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attend her ballet lesson. “How I wish I could do something different today,” said the twins with one voice. All at once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. “How would you like to be me for a day ” they asked each other. It seemed like a wonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their own friends, Grace put on Karen’s ballet dress while Karen put Grace’s brushes and paints into her bag. Then they left for their classes.
When the art lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing. When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn’t dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace was struggling in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dance steps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knocking into them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, “Karen, you should remember the basic steps. You can’t rely on copying what others are doing.”
When Karen and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they would never try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was not always greener on the other side.

Tom lost the race because of greediness.

“Why do we have to go to school ” Desi asked Tisha, her best friend. “Getting up early, schoolwork, homework — it’s just too much!”
A few nights later, Desi was drawing when her mom came to talk to her. “Desi, you know the new sickness I told you about — the one that’s been spreading pretty quickly around the world ” Mom asked. Desi nodded, feeling a little scared. She didn’t like that her mom looked so worried. “To be safe, schools will be shutting down ... starting tomorrow,” her mom said quietly.
“Wait, what ” A smile started to spread across Desi’s face.
The next day, Desi slept in until 9:00 a.m. She watched cartoons in her pajamas, drew pictures, played her favorite video games etc. She did whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted.
A week later at breakfast, her mom shared, “Your teachers emailed us. I’m going to help you do your schoolwork at home.”

I don’t think you understand my life. You think I should be studying all the time. I know you want me to find a good job when I grow up, but as a little boy I would like to have a good time, too. You never think about fun things for me to do like music and sports. Two days ago, when I was watching a football game on TV, you asked me to stop and do my homework. After finishing my homework, still I wasn’t allowed to read my football magazines. You said I had to go to bed early. That was bad enough, but yesterday was the worst day. I bought some music CDs, and put them in my bag so that you wouldn’t see them. I told you I had to do my homework first. I know it was wrong to lie (说谎) to you, but you told me that Dad would talk to me later. Mum, I didn’t quite like what you did to me! I really love you, Mum, but I hope you won’t be so hard on me.

If you are travelling in Hong Kong, I think you can eat in a Chinese restaurant or go to McDonald’s or Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) to have fast food. When you come into a Chinese restaurant, you first sit down at the table. The waiters will bring you a menu soon. They usually ask, “What would you like to have ” You give your order. Then they begin to cook. It often takes some time to cook the dishes. After you have all your food, you will find your meal is always dear.
But to eat in a fast food restaurant, things are quite different. You just stand in a line in front of a counter (柜台). On the counter you will see pictures of a lot of food and drinks such as rice, hamburger, potato, cabbage, meat, hot dog, cake. You can choose any of them right away. After you give your order, people behind the counter get your food for you quickly, usually in less than three minutes. They give you your food on a plate, or in a paper bag or a box. You pay for it before you eat. And you can eat just there or take it away.
Now people like to go to fast food restaurant because to eat there is cheap and can save time. This is why fast food is becoming more and more popular in Hong Kong.

People like malls for many reasons. They don’t feel any danger around them because malls have police stations or private security guards. People don’t need to pay for parking in malls, and the weather inside is always fine. The newest malls have beautiful rest area with waterfalls and large green trees.
The largest mall in the United States is the Mall of America in Minnesota. It covers 4.2 million square feet. It has 350 stores, eight night clubs, and a seven-acre park! There are parking spaces for 12,750 cars. About 750,000 people shop every week.
The first indoor mall in the United States was built in 1965 in Edina, Minnesota. People loved doing all their shopping in one place. More malls were built all over the country. Now, malls are like town centers where people come to do many things. They shop, of course. They also eat in food house that have food from all over the world. They see movies at theatres. An elephant and a crocodile were once standing beside a river. They were quarrelling who was better.
They then made their way together back again across the river. When the elephant was trying to keep up with the fast-moving crocodile, he carelessly dropped the hat. The metal hat quickly fell to the river bottom. The crocodile dived down, and brought it up in his huge mouth. They then returned and the crocodile put the metal hat at the lion’s feet. The lion took it up and turned to the elephant, then said, “Because of your size and trunk, you reached the hat on the wall, but lost it. You couldn’t get it back.” “And you,” said the lion to the crocodile, “Although you couldn’t reach the hat, you could swim and save it. You are both wise in some ways.”

When I was a little girl, I was very shy and never liked to speak up in class. I was always afraid of making mistakes in front of others.
Things changed when I joined the cheerleading team in the sixth grade. Our teacher taught me how to perform in front of many people. To improve my dancing skills, I practiced as much as I could. After many performances, I built up my confidence (自信) little by little. Of course, I still sometimes make mistakes, but I have been able to accept them and learn from them.
Over the past few years, cheerleading has also taught me how to trust (信任) and work with others. At first, dancing in the group was not easy for me. With the help of my team members, things have become better and better. I’ve made friends with them and always try to do my best on the team. And now I do think that the success of our team is much more important than my own!
Cheerleading is more than just a sport to me. Thanks to it, I have become a better student and team player. Being on the cheerleading team has made me the person I am today.
