Last autumn, Wu Tongyu, a middle school student, did a study with two classmates. They wanted to know what problems teenagers face with short-form video apps. After the study, they wrote a proposal (提案) to the China Youth Model Chinese People' s Political Consultative Conference (全国青少年模拟政协活动). It became one of the top 32 proposals in the middle school category (组别).
They made a questionnaire (调查问卷) and handed it out to 100 students in their school. They found that over 90 percent of the students use short-form video apps in their spare time. On holidays, some spend more than two hours a day on them. Most of them know it' s a waste of time and not good for their eyes, but it seemed they lost control of themselves.
They also interviewed six students. Some talked about really upsetting videos. For example, in one video a girl said her mother died and she wanted 10,000 likes for that. Some students even tried to learn something that' s actually dangerous from videos, like making popcorn on an alcohol lamp (酒精灯).
The team suggested that video apps should use facial recognition technology (人脸识别技术) to tell users' age. Then the apps can avoid showing teenagers the videos that are not good for them. The team also called for parents to spend more time with their children on outdoor activities and reading. Schools should also
organize more activities for students to develop their skills and help them make friends. These things can help keep teenagers off their phones.
