Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists(灵学家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To study if such a “sixth sense” really exists(存在), Robert Baker, a psychologist at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments(实验).
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared(盯着看) at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects(受试者) were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they’re being stared at. If people don’t believe the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker, “I advise they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”
52. What’s the purpose of the two experiments
A. To explain why humans have a sixth sense.
B. To show how people act while being watched.
C. To explain when people can have a sixth sense.
D. To study if humans can sense when they are stared at.
53. What sense do humans have according to parapsychologists

54. The underlined word “outcome” in the last paragraph means ________.
A. fact B. result C. example D. content
55. What can we learn from the passage
A. People are born with a sixth sense.
B. People have a sixth sense in all places.

On the night of Oct 29, during Halloween celebrations, a deadly stampede (致命的踩踏事故) happened in Seoul, South Korea ( 韩 国 首 尔 ). It killed at least 156 people, including four Chinese nationals, Xinhua reported. And 151 people were badly hurt. This was the country’s deadliest accident since a 2014 ferry sinking (沉船) that left 304 people dead.
On that night, around 100,000 people gathered in Seoul’s Itaewon district for the country’s biggest no-mask outdoor Halloween event since the pandemic (疫情) began.
According to police, the accident happened around 10:30 p.m. when a huge crowd surged (涌入) into
a narrow alley (巷子), just 3.2 meters wide.
Yoon Hee-keun, head of the National Police Agency, said that he “feels a heavy responsibility (责任) for the disaster as the head of one of the related government offices”. Police officers who received the calls failed to deal with them effectively, he added.
South Korean Prime Minister ( 总理) Han Duck-soo also said the accident can be blamed in part on incomplete crowd management rules. He called for the use of drones (无人机) and other high-tech resources to develop an effective crowd-control strategy. How to Be a Better Teenager
Since we have grown up, it’s time to improve ourselves. Here are some ways I can think of to help us.
As students, the most important thing is to study hard. The more knowledge we learn, the brighter future we will have. Also, we need to do lots of reading. Reading can open up a whole new world to us. Besides, traveling is another way to enrich our mind, because it can help us learn about different people and cultures.
What’s more, we should improve our manners. When we are walking or riding in the street, it’s necessary for us to obey traffic rules. In public places, we should queue for our turn. In the library, we’d better keep our voice down.
It’s never too late to do something meaningful, I think we should try our best to help people in need. We can work as volunteers as often as possible. Moreover, we can donate our pocket money to charities to help homeless people and children in poor areas.
In a word, if every one of us tries our best to do better, the world will become more and more beautiful.(
