Dragon Head-raising Day
As the saying goes, “On the second day of the second lunar month, the dragon raises its head”. Dragon Head-raising Day is a traditional Chinese festival that falls on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar. It's also called Eryue'er Festival. In Gregorian calendar, it usually falls between late February and mid-March.
What does the day symbolize And how do people celebrate it
In Chinese culture, the dragon is an auspicious animal that dominates cloud and rain. The second day of the second lunar month is thought to be the day when dragon awakes and raises its head according to the folk legend. So the day is called Dragon Head-raising Day. In ancient agrarian societies, farming was highly reliant on the weather. Proper rainfall and plenty of sunlight were necessary for a good harvest at the end of the year. So Dragon Head-raising Day is about honoring the Chinese dragon and praying for good weather in spring, the key time for ploughing the fields.
After Dragon Head-raising Day, spring is coming and there wil be more and more rainfall. People think this
credit goes to the dragon, so the day is also called Spring Dragon Festival. Since the Tang Dynasty, Chinese people have had the custom of spending the Spring Dragon Festival.
Traditions and customs
The most popular custom on Dragon Head-raising Day is having a haircut, which is thought to be auspicious. To get a haircut in spring is away to embrace the new year with a new look. Doing this is also believed to bless children with good health and adults with prosperity throughout the year. So, on that day, barbershops' business is prospering and full of customers.
According to the Chinese tradition, it's inauspicious to have a haircut during the first lunar month. As the saying goes, “If you have your haircut in the first lunar month, your uncle will die”. So, people usually have their haircut before the first lunar month and wait till the Dragon Head-raising Day to have the haircut again.
People also have the custom of spreading ash around their houses, courtyards, hearths and water tanks on Dragon Head-raising Day. It is called “Introducing the Dragon” and done as a prayer for health and good luck. In fact, the firewood as his also good for killing pests and poisonous insects, which stir in spring and damage people and their crops.
The most common foods for celebrating the festival are popcorns, pancakes, noodles, dumplings, fired soya beans and pig's head. People in different areas have different traditions about the foods on the day. In Beijng, people eat Lüdagunr (Glutinous rice rolls with sweetened bean paste) and spring pancakes on this day.
In Shanxi, people like to eat fried dough twists. In Shandong, fried soya beans, noodles and dumplings are the festival foods. In Fuzhou, the salted porridge made of glutinous rice, celery, garlic, fry dried shrimps and shredded meat is eaten.
To be auspicious, what people eaton Dragon Head-raising Day is usually renamed after parts of the dragon. Eating dumplings is called eating “dragon's ears”; spring pancakes are called “dragon's scales”; rice is called “dragon'ss on”; wontons are called “dragon's eyes”, noodles are called “dragon's beard”, and fried dough twists are called “dragon's bones”, etc. These show people's hope that the dragon can bless them with favorable weather and a bumper grain harvest.
There is a legend about why people eat popcorns on Dragon Head-raising Day. It is said that the Jade Emperor was unhappy that China had a female emperor Wu Zetian in the Tang Dynasty. He ordered the dragon kings to stop raining for three years to punish people. Couldn’t bear to see people starve to death, the dragon king in charge of the heaven river made secret rainfall. Knowing this, the Jade Emperor expelled him from the heavenly palace and locked him under a mountain with a stele read “The dragon king violated the law of heaven and should be punished forages. Unless golden beans bloom, he couldn't be free”.
To save the dragon king, people searched for gold beans everywhere. The next year, on the second day of the second lunar month, when people were drying the corn seeds in the sun, they found the corn seeds look like golden beans. They heated them and made popcorns to let the golden beans “bloom”. Knowing people's efforts, the dragon king raised its head and called to the Jade Emperor to see the golden beans bloom. At last, the dragon king was set free and allowed back to the heavenly palace and resume its charge of cloud and rain. To pay tribute to the dragon king, there has been the folk custom of making popcorns on this day.
In some places people also go to the suburb for relaxing on this day. Some people also worship the dragon or the Earth God in the hope that there would be rain helping the farming.
In some rural areas, the day is also called the daughters' day. On this day, the married daughters would come home and stay for several days to accompany their parents. Later, they will go back to help with crop planting.
On Dragon Head-raising Day, women are not allowed to do needlework, as the dragon will raise its head to look towards the earth. People think needles may hurt its eyes. In some places, washing clothes is also a taboo, because people think it may hurt dragon's skin.

In some places, washing clothes is also a taboo, because people think it may hurt dragon's skin.1
